Some of us have more than one guitar (this is probably an understated comment) but I am curious.

How to you identify your cases on which guitar is inside? The newer black cases appear to all be the same on the exterior.

I am guessing a few of you use a modified Dewey Decimal type system.

Hi Jim,

I've written in the "O" of the Ovation sign on the case the guitar No.

Simple piece of masking tape on the side which describes the guitar, year, model number, serial number, etc.

Duct tape and sharpie on the top end of the case...readable from above...they're lined up against one wall.

I just write the model and serial numbers on the case with a metallic sharpie. I can print pretty well so it looks ok. I know there are probably some here that may find that objectionable, but to each there own ... it works.

Little piece of paper with the model number taped to the headstock end of all the black cases.
Unless it has an obvious difference...

Vince, I guess the only problem with that is when you might be selling. Many new owners want things pristine and would find writings on the case unacceptable.....hence why tape or luggage tags provide a cleaner solution.

Some of us might even switch cases around based on which guitar we like best in which case (since some say "Ovation" inside and some don't) and some cases might ship with a lesser quality case that originally houses a more expensive guitar (ala Brother Bobby).

However, it you know it is a guitar you never plan to sell then obviously the best solution is the one that you prefer.

I use a silver flow-tip sharpie and write what's in it on the side up by the peghead(for when it's standing on end) and across the ass end of the case for when it's on it's side.
I have used Masking tape, it fades and crumbles after 10-20 years.
The silver duct tape comes loose and leaves the adhesive behind.
When I sell it if they don't like the writing, well TS. Actually I've never had that issue yet.
Some cases are unique and the only one like it that I have, so those don't need to be marked.

With Beal's collection, he doesn't need to label them. Any case you pick up would have a stellar guitar in it.

You people don't keep your guitars out so they'll get played? I don't think I own any guitars that are in cases at the house.....

That's why I label the cases Paul.

If the guitars were inside of them I wouldn't have to need to match the case to the guitar.

You can store them in cases?!?

How do the visiting pickers get at them when you;re not looking? I store mine on the walls. (inside walls only, of course.)

Which brings up the point, I hang all mine on the wall on Herc hangers so I only keep 6 at a time. They do get played more when they're in view. But, and it's a big butt, they take up twice the space that way cause you still have to store the case.

My cases are in the basement.
If I kept the guitars down there also they would never get played.
It's a big incentive to only own as many guitars as can be hung on the walls.

... when I've sold a guitar I just use a little acetone on a wrag and quickly wipe off the writing. It comes of very quickly and easily. The only problem would come if you scrub on it too long with the acetone ... eventually it will start working on the case finish.

All good suggestions. I decided to to use sign vinyl in silver just above the handles. Indoors this stuff should last around 10 years and it can be removed. The lettering is Canterbury text 4 tenths of a inch in height.

I used to put these on the handles of my cases until the place I got them locally quit selling them. I need to come up with something else soon though.

Hey, you guys have been talking about me while I was gone? First Trader was kind enough to mention "big butt", and now Jim E has me lettering his guitar cases! :D

Anyway, all of my cases are as distinctive as the guitars that go in them. One has a bubble where it got left near a heater one night, one has a little red heart the previous owner stuck on it, one has the model and serial numbers written in black sharpie that the previous owner was kind enough to put on it, one is pristine, etc. And yes, the guitars are all hanging, and they all get played.

Alison...the text really is named "Canterbury". I don't make this stuff up. You know, I could hang the guitars but, I'd have to take down the movie posters...

The engraved plate is also a nice touch Patch.

I've tried almost everything and it seems like it either fell off the case or left a mess.

I took a tip from cases I see coming in from touring clients-silver metallic Sharpie on black gaffer's tape. I label the back end of the case and also the side of the case near the handle. The better gaffer tape doesn't seem to leave residue, and I can rip it off and reuse it if I lend the instrument out. I can also use this 'system' on amp road cases that look alike, amp racks, etc. Be prepared, though, a 60 yard roll of the good stuff is 20-30 bucks.

Dang! I forgot about using vinyl. If the case doesn't have any type residue it would work for non-road use. I actually own a 24" vinyl cutter and used to run a home-based sign shop. 'Worked out of a large step van (mobile business) and called it "Vincent-Van-Goes!Signs&Graphics" It was a great idea, but not up here where it's cold for half the year. Now it will be a retirement business. Anyway ... back to the case thing ... Kim's tape thing sounds good also.

Masking tape and sharpie, except the new ones. On those I write the model on the UPC sticker at the end of the case.
