I could not think of the name of song so I asked the guy next to me at work. He didn't know either.
All I knew was one line from the chorus.
So.. out from the other office comes Mike The Tech Guy.
He pulls his tele-phone out of his pocket.
Puts it up to my face.
Tells me to say the line from the song.
bink-bink bink...
There the song & author is on the screen with multiple links to click on.

Now I'm a sci-fi kinda guy so this should not have been a big deal, but it was.
I have been im-pressed all day.

I was just about to come here to post the question to youz guys.
Sorry... you have been re-placed!

I have looked for something like that online, but I never found one...

So if y'all know if there is a website that will do that, Please direct me.

Personally I don't own a cell phone... I think that they are pretentious.
I also don't wear a wristwatch... same reason. Just An Ole Hippie...

You want the technology a "smart phone" offers but, not the platform it comes in?

Yeah, it's pretty cool technology. At first I thought it was just a gimmick but I actually do find myself using it.

I use my cell phone all day. It's required for my job. So I guess it's pretentious to have one of those, too.

...oh, look at the time. Gotta get to work.

Hey to be fair, I'm not a huge fan of wrist watches either. They leave that tan line and make it look like your arm is dirty. If I didn't have a responsibility to be at certain places at certain times I don't think I would have one either.

Come to think of it, why do you need a wrist watch when you can just look at your phone to see what time it is? Duh.

When I had a Job, I had a Company cellphone.
It has the time on its display.

Even when I had a company cellphone, some days I did not even use it.
I know what my job is... Talking about it ain't gonna get it done.

When I am working, it is time to go home when you Finish The Job.
Depending on what you are doing, a wristwatch can get your arm ripped off!
Rings can cause you to lose fingers.

But I do think that App that identifies songs is really cool.
I also think that 'Guitar strings' app is really cool.
I am not gonna buy a cell phone just to get them.

Sometimes you can Google a line out of a song and find the song.
But nowhere near as dependable as that phone thing.

Which is why I asked if there is an online version of that app....
For us neanderthals who still only use their phones to talk.

Yeah, I stopped wearing a watch for that reason. Glad I never went out and bought a Rolex.

The program is called Shazzam(sp?).

I would assume it analyzes a specific succession of frequencies (like th'melody line) contained within a certain time frame & thgen compares them to a database until finds a "match" (like a section of a fingerprint).

It often has a problems matching "jazz versions" of a popular song as th'jazz artist may have a tendancy to "stray off th'path" of the melody line.

We use it at work here all th'time . . .

Shazam. Killer iPhone app. But that one only works with recorded music, and brings back the performer name also (and a link to buy and download the song from iTunes). Shazam doesn't work with just saying the lyrics. There's an app called TuneWiki that will do that for you.

I've gotten Shazam t'recognize things that I've "sung" into th'phone, as well.

It's REAL tricky/sporadic, but we've done it . . .
