This guy was NUTZ but I loved him. I saw him live many times in NYC. I was shocked and saddened waaaay after the fact to learn today that he died last August of Pancreatic cancer. You can read about that here

You or Willy?
That WAS pretty exhilarating, wasn't it? Poor Willy. Yep. He was definitely insane ... I think towards the end he started dressing up like an Indian or a vampire or maybe a vampire Indian, I'm not sure ...

Location: Right now? | Thanks for the "Start the Car" link. That was quite enjoyable.
Al, "Cadillac Walk", yes, but how about "Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl", "You'd Better Move On" ... so many! He did two versions of "I Call Your Name" one with Mark Knopfler on guitar ~ very, very sweet and romantic, albeit quite 'commercial' compared to his other stuff ... anybody wanna dance?
See goofy video link below to listen to it ... WARNING: there's partial nudity (stampede begins), so if that offends you don't watch it. He did another version on the CD "Backstreets of Desire", but it was, in my opinion, not as good ... too over produced or something ... what do I know ... here's the link:
I Call Your Name by Willy DeVille with Mark Knopfler on guitar
I had all of his vinyl, including "Miracle", "Le Chat Bleu", etc. (with his first wife's "Toot's" (a.k.a. Susan Berlinsky) photo on the front sporting a Cougar tatoo with "Willy" written underneath it. Willy had the same one.
Susan, er, "Toots" was the original "template" for the Amy Winehouse persona look (black beehive hair style, tight bodiced dresses, cat's eye makeup, stilletto heels, etc.). She was NUTZ jealous and people who knew them said she sometimes carried a butcher knife in her bra or boots.
They were together for twenty years. Willy ditched Toots and ran off with his second wife, Lisa, who later committed suicide by hanging. Willy found her and cut her down, which he sings about in one of his songs. He got over it, I guess and married for a third time.
"Toots" had a son, Sean (not Willy's, but Willy raised him as his own) What 'great' parents ... two heroin addicts, poor kid. Heroin, I'm fairly certain, ultimately ended up taking him from us in the end, even though he was clean. It was, sadly, too late. Hepatitis C and then pancreatic cancer ... not an unusual or atypical ending for such lifestyles. His illnesses were surely exacerbated by the fact that he had diabetes, too.
When I used to go see him in NYC, he was SO skinny and sick, sweating all the time, but when he got on stage, he held up.
Wow, I just loved that freak ... he was mesmerizing to watch ... you had to be there to understand ... the whole scene was the ultimate club/performance experience IMHO. His album Jane Crow Alley may have sold better if he wasn't dressed like an Indian Chief on the cover. I think, but I am not certain, that "Jane Crow" was his grandmother.
His "Trio Live in Berlin" CD is excellent. Sorry to go on about him like this. It's just that he deserved more than he got.
I'm sorry, but he was WAAAAAY better a performer than New York Doll's frontman David Johansen, a.k.a. "Buxter Poindexter" was. But that's a whole 'nother page to write, lol.
P.S. ... anybody wanna volunteer to help me with the chords on "I Call Your Name"?
;)

Location: Right now? | Cliff .. you don't get it; I WROTE Wikipedia, dude. Apparently, YOU read Wikipedia!Furthermore, I was a Willy DeVille fan WAAAY before Wikipedia, darlin' ... or these fancy computers for that matter ... yeah! So there! But it's OK; I still love you, you sour grape, you. And I DID warn everyone that the video (I dont' know who it was that put it on YouTube) was goofy as hell)).
And yes, the CHORDS ... I am not the virtuoso you are my dear, as I am a STUDENT of guitar ... my repertoire consists of about 12 songs, but I'm REALLY TRYING, and I'm VERY sensitive about my guitar playin', so don't you DO THAT, you meanie! I come here for INFORMATION from all the wonderful guitar players that participate on this lovely forum ... you are supposed to help me!
AJ ... Don't be fooled ... I am shook up, but not mixed up.
Dave ... that guy is more like Voltaire, only much worse, lol.
Be nice, boys, or make your own thread about something far more hipper, cooler, WHATEVA!
Cliff ... at your next gig up North, you'll know the redhead in the back heckling you when you see her...

Alex, no, you cannot get your four minutes and sixteen seconds back ... YOU made the decision to go over there ... blah, blah, blah ... now hush and eat your porridge.

Not to nitpick, but why are benefits "for" something when they clearly should be "against" something? Like Benefit against breast cancer.
Anyhoo......Willa, go see Cliff and take some video or pictures. Always good to see a fellow OFC'r perform. Buy him a beer and request a song (probably NOT a Willy DeVille song). |

The Lovely Linda returned from visiting a friend with chocolates and a card. (we have long established that the best way to get what you want is just buy it.)
33 years and we still enjoy each others company more than most anyone else.
As a bonus, she's good friends with almost all my previous gf's! (except the red head. but we ALL changed our names and moved after That Incident.) |
