I just watched a movie yesterday called 'The Guitar'. I thought this thread was going to be about that.

Oh dear that was depressingly....excellent. I think as a guitar player you can have two reactions to that clip, either close the case with a sense of despair and never play again as you know you could never be that good OR let it inspire you to sit down with the computer and guitar and try and work out your best version of it.....me? Well I've got my guitar in hand, here goes.... :)

Ok...that was nothing short of delightful! GREAT technique. So great, and so relaxed, that the technique was almost invisible, leaving only a superb feel. Just wonderful. I liked one of the comments below the video, to wit: "At last, the real thing. Substance over style, content over artifice - talent, in a word. Value it while you can. There ain't any more of these guys coming up this way..." I wonder whether that last is true...or are they out there, and we are simply not valuing them as we should? Hard to tell...I just keep stumbling on people like this on YouTube and elsewhere.

The version with Guy Clark AND Verlon Thompson is ever bit as good. Great, I mean. Now that's SOOOOOOME playing! Silk, with feeling!

Very nice, that song has the perfect blend of Folk Story and Great guitar work. Some guys have a more natural presence and natural vocal story telling ability.
Thanks for this post.

That's a D40. Awesome instrument.

I got the same model guitar but mine sounds "different" ha ha. Of course any player worth a lick wouldn't use a damn capo.

We talked about this song here a few months back. I never did learn to post links, but if you go over to Music Mike's ning page you can hear a fantastic version that he did. And just like I did in the last thread on this subject, I'll remind you that I posted a thread (a year ago maybe?) about a "haunted" Guild that I once had.

I thought it would be about the movie too. We saw it the other day as well. Interesting and worth a look.

Hey Beal, if you've seen the movie, you might want to add to the other 'The Guitar' thread...

Hey kids, you want an example of songwriting craftsmanship at it's best AND acoustic guitar playing beyond compare? Check out that link above…

I've seen Verlon play with Guy Clark many times, he is a superb musician. Guy & Verlon did a slower version of "The Guitar" when I saw them last year, but I have never heard Verlon's solo version. It's great, thanks for posting the link.

BTW, the song "The Guitar" with Guy singing lead and Verlon playing guitar appears on Guy Clark's excellent latest CD; "Somedays The Song Writes You" (nice title.) You can hear all the songs (lo-fi) on your computer at that link. Verlon plays on all the tracks. The liner-notes include a "thanks" to "The Fur Peace Songwriting Class of 2002 for their inspiration in the writing of The Guitar" including all of their names. That must have been some class!

Hey, I actually learned something about guitar that I didn't get from the OFC.
I hadn't heard of Guy Clark until I learned that the local owner of Old Boise Guitar, John Pisano, won Guy Clark's national songwriting contest. The prize was a trip to Nashville for a songwriting/playing clinic. I don't know if Johnny's been there yet. I haven't been in the store for awhile.

Mark,

Here's Guy Clark singing the first verse of one of his compositions with some of his friends whom you may recognize, folks that are sometimes referred to as "Texas Troubadours."

…and HERE\'s another example of his songwriting that I like a lot. (Not a great video, but you can hear the lyrics.)

…and HERE\'s another Guy Clark classic from ACL.

You can tell your friend Johnny that your "online friends" congratulate him, that's a nice honor, and it should be a great workshop. Apparently, the song "The Guitar" was born in a similar workshop.

Hope you enjoy the videos, he's the real deal…

I just tabbed the intro for this song yesterday in Guitar Pro...but after the intro I am lost, lol. Oh, and I transposed the tab down a whole step to eliminate the capo. My fingerings are different than some of those he is using, but it still works. I really want to learn this song but it will likely be a long time before I can work on it again. Thanks Damon for turning me onto it!
David :-)

I watched a couple of James Taylor DVD's this weekend. He uses a capo a lot more than I thought.

They are a handy little tool. :D

Since there are thousands of examples of how absurd that statement is, I believe it was just sarcasm… either that or just baiting Capo Guy…

…in which case, it worked! ;)
