Location: MA | Does anyone know what "figured" Koa is? Is it solid Koa wood or a Koa veneer on top of another layer? A friend has the 2009 collectors (sweet guitar) with the Figured Koa top. I am looking at a couple of Takamine guitars one thats also figure koa. Any info would be appreciated. |

Don't know about the Tak's, but the spec "figured koa" doesn't tell you one way or another. |

Location: MA | Thank you everyone. I have tried looking up "figured" koa and could not find a proper definition. I also thought it may refer to the wood grain/pattern. Thanks |

As far as Koa goes I think finding some straight grain Koa would be very tough - and boring.
Now "Flame" is striping, "Quilt" is pillowing and "Bearclaw" is somewhere between stressed and stretch marks...
... caught a flash on the tube last night of the OctoMom belly at 9 Months and I'm still shocked. |

Cuz the grain on the inside goes another direction.
(It is actually straight! follows the direction of the fretboard)
See Woody? This is straight-grained and boring Koa.
I don't know about things like the 09C or spendy Takamines...
But like our Woodsman sez, most of that Flame Maple and such is veneer... laminate. |

Location: Right now? | Hmm. interesting. So I guess the '09C is "Curly" at least on mine. I thought the "F" in "F-KOA" meant figured. The one up on Elderly sure looks like figured though.
Thanks for those photos, Colin.

Or something like that |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Fred and I selected each of our Koala models within minutes of one another. He chose the figured top and I went with the wild lines look. All of these first run 12 fretters were marvelous. I'm sure the second run of 14 fretters was just as purdy, too.
