Location: Illinois | I like the sound and playability of my Ovation but have difficulty with the Bowl back. The guitar tends to ROLL up horizontal when I stand makng my fretting hand have to bend to the limit of my wrist. I have had to resort to taping a foam block on the top center of the bowl to prevent this roll. I have read other posts at different forums on the web of people having the same problem/complaint. And don't tell em I should have not bought an Ovation if I don't like the bowl. I bought it for a specific purpose but the rolling is getting very annoying. If anyone has found a solution I would be grateful--And the only other solution I have found is to lower the guitar so that the roll in the bowl is below my waist but also is tiring on the fretting hand. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Welcome. I rarely play standing, so I can't relate, but you might be able to find several threads on this with a search. It's good to figure out how to search, since there's a ton of info archived here.
Also, check out the new (since 2005) contour bowls, which are designed to alleviate this problem. It sounds like you're due for a new guitar anyway. Keep your current one for sitting down.
A couple weeks ago I went to a performance where the guitar player played his Adamas for 4 hours, almost nonstop, standing, and didn't seem to have the problem. He wasn't skinny, but not too big, either. |

If you hang around here very much you will not only learn a lot about Ovations, but like the rest of us, you'll probably end up owning quite a few. (A newb and his money are soon parted. All it takes is a click on the "For Sale" section. :D ) Welcome to you, and good luck finding a solution. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | I bought one of those "Standing Ovation" devices for the same reason, and it takes care of that rolling problem. The guy selling them is a member here and says he'll give a discount to members if they mention that in advance. Another thing that I felt helped a lot with my standing/playing I discovered after buying a deep bowl Adamas from Dave.(Gallerinski) An additional strap button had been installed on the heel of the neck. It allowed me to hold the guitar with the neck elevated more, which really helped in correcting my holding posture and making barre chords easier. |

Or get a contour bowl. |

Location: Illinois | I am really impressed! The responses and helpfulness of this forum is terrific. I probably will go for the "Standing Ovation" And yes I do have a lot more problems in life that are not revealed here. If only they could be solved so easily. I'm going to check out the discount that was mentioned to see what it is. And thanks a lot!!! I have an Applause. I bought it because I do some free concerts for nursing homes and at times some "Older Women" get out of hand and attack me and offer themselves to me. I needed a guitar I could drop and run, because I usually have to run and keep running until the orderlies get them restrained. |

A couple hours in a warm oven and you could have a contour bowl. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | While some opt for gadgets and tape, I opted early on to just not squeeze the guitar with my right arm. Maybe it's from playing electrics mostly that are so thin there's nothing to squeeze, but I kinda feel if my arm is doing anything more than just barely touching the top or edge, I need to be doing something different.

Location: Miami | Am I the only one that actually likes the way you can roll it up with a slight arm press to see the strings better? That slight roll actually makes it easier, not harder, on my wrist, but I do notice I don't play the acoustic as low as I play an electric. Try shortening the strap to make things alot easier on the wrist. Sometimes the simplest fixes do the trick. |

You are also not the only one that does not like standing with a contour bowl.
I can do it, I just don't like it.
I prefer to sit and play anyway.
LPD, the hard part is training yourself not to use your guitar for an arm-rest.
This is difficult. Which is why I play seated... I'm Lazy! |

Location: Canada | I play seated as well, but I can not play contour bowl standing up. It angles itself towards my feet somehow. Basic strumming is not hard but fancy stuff becomes hard as the neck is twisted away from my line of vision just enough to annoy me. Then again I don't even play electric when standing so maybe I just suck.
Sitting down though, the c-bowl just "fits" me and I can play forever without fatigue. |

| as all I have is a mid-depth and ssb.. I haven't had any problems with the rolling up issue, even though I have a deep-bowl belly. plus I agree that a proper strap adjusted correctly solves quite a bit.

I also have short arms and legs with a big ol' long body (think tall Oompa Loompa). Miles, I bet your reach is probably a foot longer than mine.
That said, I have more issues with my mid-and SSB bowls than the deep ones, dunno why.
LPD, I have one of those standy things on my 1778LX and it works great. I gig with it often. |

Now, THAT is a FUNNY visual. However, you are not getting off that easily. You MUST post a photo of yourself so we can see how gorgeous you are. I am imagining Gerard Butler? Johnny Depp? Hugh Jackman? Sigh. Kenny Rogers? Don Johnson? Forget it.

Location: Illinois | This place is a riot. Afraid to post my picture as I am wanted in fifteen states. Besides, the only women that I appeal to are Octogenarians with Dementia as I believe I also have Dementia or at least if I can remember long enough to finish the dementia screening test. I am afraid to install another strap button because if the balance is not exact I'll end up with Swiss cheese back. (Basically I am afraid of just about everything) As far as raising it higher that's where I started. Because I have a (Slight) bit of belly hanging over my belt, by lowering the top edge of the bowl to just about my belt my Natural body "Bulge" fills the gap.
Also I got a response about the discount from Standing Ovation and it seems like a good deal. |
