Location: Ohio | I would like to CONSIDER selling my 2002 1869 6-string in Cherry Cherry burst, but I want to be realistic and totally fair both ways. It is absolutely MINT with original case. I can find absolutely no damage and it has been played very little. It is a much better guitar to be played standing and with an amp and I don't stand to play much any more. New, it is very high dollar, but I have been looking at the "For Sale" postings and see that the range looks close to $700 based on the condition. This is quite a difference from Ovation's original suggested retail. What happened? If I can't get at least a reasonable amount, I would rather consider donating it to a charity (suggestions please) or giving it as a gift to someone who would appreciate it. I don't play it and I hate to see it go to waste sitting in my music room. It is a real beauty, but I'm just not sure which way to turn. Maybe I should just put it back in its' case and just let it ride. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am not independently wealthy and could really use the money, but, not at the folly of selling it for some ridiculous price. Thanks everyone! You all are the best! |

There are quite a few folks who have done that, or pass it on to someone who is starting out as the actions on these guitars seems to be well suited for the beginner. Easy to play. The market for used guitars is down, not just for Ovations. With a shallow bowl you really have to find the right person. Most of the folks around here prefer the deeper bowls but there is a niche for the shallow ones especially for folks that have another guitar and want one for mostly the stage. Check ebay and look at the completed auctions and that will give you a good idea of value. The value to you is a different story all together. Only you can decide to hold on to it or not. Location: Upper Left USA | I'd go with an Ebay auction that ends on Sunday evening, starts at $1 and set your reserve where you are comfortable.
Superb pictures and clear description as well and this will help it to go to someone that is looking for just such an item.
You could just post it here for your asking price and see what happens. Try shooting it on a red blanket and bounce the flash off of the ceiling. |

That sums it up - Ovations and Adamas get very little respect, and anybody who thinks they'll make money off a sale of one soon bumps headlong into that cold, hard reality. The only ones that command the kind of money they should are the original slotheads. It's not unique to Ovations. Even among the more "respected" guitars, only a very few ever command a re-sale price anywhere near the original MSRP, and even more rarely will they increase in re-sale value. Guitars are about as good an "investment" as Beanie Babies. Only you can determine what a guitar is "worth" to you. If you feel the amount you can actually get out of a sale is too low, then either keep it and enjoy it or donate it to a needy person or organization. |

Location: Right now? | Joe Camel, just hold on to it. I have a few of those. Despite what Master Gallerinski says (and he's right, as usual, of course), I'm not letting mine go at those prices. Like you, I would very much rather just keep them, or give them to someone who would appreciate them.
Cheap, cheap said the canary. They are really, really nice guitars IMHO. Even if you are kind enough to donate yours, you can do that later when the economy improves (wishful, hopeful). I have two blondes if you want to trade one of them. I love all the reds. ;-)

For some reason Americans think that they should be able to buy a House (or durn near anything) and sell it for more than they paid for it.
In Cars and Guitars, the item loses a significant amount of its value as soon as it leaves the showroom. And nobody pays MSRP. 2007 Collectors' were going for $700 in 2008. Maybe for a limited edition run of 50 or 10, but these will often lose value also, once the Wow wears off. Certain models, like the Book Elite, become Iconic... But to the average citizen, it is just another Ovation in a herd of Ovations. A Collectors' Edition is only truly valuable to a Collector. Otherwise, on evilBay, it is just another Elite to people who are looking for a bargain and don't know the difference between a C778 and a CS257.
I understand your frustration, but that is just a fact of life. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | Joe, I had a black 1869 once and really liked the way it played and sounded. I think those were some of the best production guitars made. The ONLY reason they sell so cheap is because there were so many of them made. There IS a good reason there were so many made .. because people really like 'em. I like to think of them as the Mercedes Benz of Ovation guitars. If there is something in particular that you don't like about it, you could always look at a trade option also.
If however you are wanting to donate it, that Guitars for Vets is a great program. |

I guess I'm better off just keeping the beauty for a few more years and let someone else decide just what to do. I just can't seem to get motivated to sell this wonderful musical instrument for a "song"(no pun intended...LOL). As for trading it, I would only be interested in a nylon stringed classical type instrument. I would be will to entertain any possibilities. Other than that, again, thanks for all your effort in giving me a hand. No one appreciates Ovation like we do!

| That's sorta what happened to me a few years ago. I got the idea to think about maybe selling my 1975, 1621-4 sometime in the future if I got around to it and didn't forget but then I found out that the guitar is practically worthless even though it is in good condition so I realized that I'm stuck with it until death do us part as it were.
I'm glad that I didn't sell it because I use it quite a bit now.
The irony of course is that, when I bought the Ovation way back in 75, I had a chance to buy a 58 Les Paul instead for 1,200. |
