Location: Cicero, NY | Hector & Vince - I bought a 1537 from MWoody that was in INSANE shape. The guy who did that to ANY guitar, much less a 1537, should be shot. Woody, the OFC community and I sent it back to the factory for a complete re-work and it came back brand new. My pics are pretty lame compared to dweezil's but I'll put this guitar up against any - those guys are THAT good. I play it every day and it just gets better every day. The top has become a little more golden since I took the pics in my ning site but feel free to check 'em out.

I have some dings in the finish along the binding and one noticeable ding in the finish on the top near the bottom edge. There is also a small piece of the epaulet missing. I want to have it refinished and the electronics upgraded to the new two-knobber intrals.
My anxiety with a total refinish is replacing the eppis with new ones. The originals have birdseye maple on them, and I haven't seen any of the reworked ones come back with those same exact eppis. I want it to be as original as possible. If that cannot be done, then I may have to opt with converting it to a -1. |

That was plug installed by the MS to fix a "hack" from P.O. who screwed the fretboard down to the top. It wasn't done by anyone here to the best of knowledge.
It was partially repaired when I got the guitar from Blues Sailor, and he had it forwarded to the factory before I took ownership. All is well now! |

Location: SoCal | Actually, I believe that is the guitar I repaired with a walnut plug after I took the screw out of it. Appeared to be a non-OFC'er who thought the fretboard was coming off.
Had a couple of OFC owners prior who didn't realize that the fretboard is supposed to float, sold to Stephen Terry 1/05 (302433). |

Location: California | Very nice guitars. The sound of this guitar is just unique. Play them if you have one. I contacted the factory to send my guitar. I have been reading most of the comments about the 1537 repairs and it is interesting what all you have to say about it. Examples range from: do it (replace the top but nowdays it is replaced along with the bowl) and it won't be a 1537 anymore, don't do it (the mojo is on the top, get the varnish cracks fixed only, don't do anything and just put cya on the cracks, send it to the factory all it matters is how much you want to spend. Recently I got a 1537 and all the good things I have read about the sound of this it is true. Mine guitar has varnish cracks along the top but it has spectacular sound (a brilliant projection that it becomes very very pleasant coming through your chest). I am hoping just get the cracks fixed, upper frets replaced, have original knoblers placed and general cleanup. What it matters to me after playing this great instrument for a while is the particular sound of the 25 year old aged top. Any other comments for those that have repairs done without the top replaced?

I'm crossing my fingers on my repairs, but I've had a few in for major work before, and I've always been more than satisfied with the results. I ordinarily wouldn't have anxiety about sending a guitar in for anything, but because this one is so special to me, I can't seem to avoid it. |

Location: Upper Left USA | I can dig through the parts bins but I think the Black Plastic pins that were special to that early style OPP are easily damaged and hard to find.

I had to think hard if I was the Hack from Port Orchard. I prefer the "Butcher of Bremerton" btw...

I had a very clear and detailed dream about being at the factory, watching its progress and speaking to the techs about the process. It was almost like watching a movie. Is THAT SICK or WHAT?
I hope I can someday be able to visit the factory and see that dream come true. |

Yep, I have a lefty 1537 burst. Looks like Damon's and G8r's...except the fretboard angle, nut, saddle, and strings are reversed. :) Haven't had time to take pics and Damon's are far superior to anything I would take. |

I have been looking closely at the different top color tones and the close-ups of the epaulets, noticing some differences in the wood colors. Some of them clearly have birseye maple on the eppis and some are plain maple. The one I just sent in for a top refinish had very nice epaulets with the birdseye. I know the colors have darkened with age, along with the darkened finish. So I am wondering how mine will turn out in the end. |

My 1537-4 had the top refinished by its previous owner, but I don't know when that was. I probably should have asked ... duh.
You can't really go by what you see in photos, because lighting really impacts photos. Look at this photo of my guitar. In the other two photos I posted in this thread, the neck looks very light, and in this photo it appears much darker ~ it looks like a different guitar, and the photos of this 1537 were taken within minutes of each other.
When I sent that "Honolulu Horror", a 1985 1685-5 12'er I bought last August (remember her?), back to the MS for repairs (it was a MESS), they had to fix the epaulets, which were cracked right through, gaping, and well, just awful ` (broken ribs, etc).
John Budny did his magic. If you didn't know where the damage was to begin with, you probably couldn't tell where the repairs are, or, at the very least, have to look hard to find them. I'd hate for you to sacrifice that pretty bird's eye maple on your epis, too ... maybe you should live with the chip? Is it huge?
Here is "LuLu" after her repairs and spa treatment; Believe me when I tell you, this guitar was a disaster! I left the photos a bit large so you can see. This guitar was so very nasty you wouldn't have wanted to touch her, and now, Wa La! She doesn't look like a brand new guitar, but considering what she looked like before the MS took care of her (they replaced all the machines, too, as they were completely corroded), she plays like a dream, looks great and sounds wonderful.
I'm hoping for your sake that they can just repair the chip in the epaulet(s) on your guitar rather than replace them, unless of course, you have specifically requested complete replacment.
It would probably be a lot cheaper to just fix the chip, but I don't know if they would/could do such a thing. In a patch job, perhaps matching the stain color might be problematic, but damn, those fellas are magicians, I tell ya.
On "LuLu", they did not replace them, they just fixed them. It will be fun to see your before/after photos, so if you can, please post them. Whatever happens, I'm sure she'll be gorgeous and sound beautiful when you get her back, so try not to be anxious (easy for me to say, haha ... I worried the entire time about mine).

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | I had a lot of small edge dings and one in the top.(All in the finish only) Aside for a half inch square piece missing from one of the eppis, everything from the bridge up looked pretty good, but the other stuff was unacceptable for me, since I plan on holding on to this one. So I decided to have them refinish the entire top ... that means the epaulets would have to go. I'm having them upgrade the two-knobber guts and the saddle and replace the strap buttons with the newer/larger ones. I had another 1537 that was is excellent shape, but while my daughter was playing it the strap slipped off and the guitar's headstock hit the ground, breaking off 3/4" of the rounded tip. I was able to repair it, but she wasn't her pristine self anymore.(the guitar) THAT is why I'm replacing the strap buttons on this one. I have had 4 guitars worked on by the factory and they've always done a stellar job on them. My main concern now is not how good of a job they'll do,(that's a given)but how original it will look. It is in work now, and I know worrying about it won't change anything one way or the other, but it's sorta' like having a friend in surgery. |
