How do you like my lawn? Not bad for February, huh?
It's "Field Turf". Yup, 100% fake. Same stuff they play football on, minus the yard lines. I walk around downtown Scottsdale and everything is fake: lips, smiles, boobs, so I figure what the heck let's get some fake lawn so gives me more time to spend on the internet. The leaves are real, I actually DO have real trees.
The stuff isn't cheap (for the high end like I got it's about $12. a sq. foot) but it's absolutely awesome. Have had it over a year now and honestly one of the best investments I ever made. |

Do you rake it, vacuum it, or power wash it?
It sure looks real enough. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | My dog goes on it all the time. You just pick it up like you normally would. Without being too graphic, it's really low humidity out here so the "stuff" dries into hard "nuggets" really quick. It's not like a soft mess, you know what I mean. The grass is mesh backed so #1 is no problem and I just rinse it down with water every so often. My sprinkler system is still installed, so I just turn on the sprinklers and "water" it.
It's a great surface to photograph guitars on (thought I better reel this back to guitar-speak, wink wink) because there is no dirt, grass stains, or chance of scratching the guitar.
Yes, I like the Koa guitars as well. |

The year is 2010, as Eve said to Adam.
"I'm gonna turn over a new leaf."
Thanks Gallerinski for the chuckle. Our grass is white for another couple of months. |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | The picture with the leaves almost makes me homesick for New England. The guitars are beautiful too. I've never played a koa guitar of any brand. I have heard that the koa is harder than spruce and so cuts down on the tone, but after hearing what you said (especially about the 14 fretter) I'd like to try one. |

Location: Right now? | Photo #3 of MM's just cracks me up everytime I see it; it looks like they are all waiting for him to come home and PLAY with them! The guitars I have in my office/music room are situated behind me when I'm at my desk ... I swear they whisper to me ... "Psssttt ... Willa Jean! Willa Jean! ... c'mon ... quit working ... c'mon ... you KNOW you need the practice ..."
Dave, I wish I could afford your lawn, and God knows being here on the east coast I have more than enough leaves every autumn ... I just hate lawn maintenance!! Very nice ... the guitars AND the lawns. How long is that stuff supposed to 'keep', and does that hot sun out there fade the color?

That's actually the big thing that's made this possible in recent years, developing a material that stands up to the sun and does not fade or break down. We have about 330 days of sunshine a year. But they have finally nailed it (supposedly) and it's guaranteed for 15 years. They give you a small piece at the time of installation to keep inside out of the sun as a reference. The only slight downside (in Arizona) is that in the middle of summer the surface does get hot. Hotter than real grass. You can still walk on it, but it's a little toasty. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | They scrap off about 2 inches of existing soil/sod and put down a weed/grass killing chemical and then cover with very fine sand (like dust), which I was told is crushed granite. They pack it down with a machine and then lay the fake grass on top of it. The grass is then covered fine black rubber dust that's made from recycled car tires and it's worked into the subsurface. The weight of the rubber is actually what holds it down. Ever see a slow-motion tackle on a football game and there is a little black dust coming off the turf? That's what it is. But it's worked into the "roots" so far that you'd really have to smack it to get any flying up. I guess a 300 lb lineman could do it but I can't. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | It may be the most popular artificial turf. They put it in at Boise State after a lineman died of a head injury after being bounced off the old stuff. They had to replace the first generation of field turf because the color faded. Probably would have been OK if it was faded green, but it's blue here. |

When I was in Peoria, AZ in 1985 I saw a few yards that were completely concrete and painted green. Glad to see that the technology is much more advanced and realistic looking now. |

Location: Tennessee | My son has been playing football on field turf for about five years now, and my other son has been playing lacrosse on turf like this for more than that. Almost all of the football fields in our area here are made out of this stuff now. We too get a lot of sunshine and fairly warm weather, and it does hold up real well. I've spent a lot of time on the field and the "grass" is really great stuff. Really nice to run on, and totally different than the astroturf I played on (or shall I say bled on) because it doesn't scrape you up. Also no turf toe, it eliminates most all knee and ankle injuries from cleats sticking when you cut, and like Mark said it had good cushioning for heads and other hard hits. Every few years they need to put down some new rubber into the turf, but so far that's it. It has been a huge cost savings for our schools here even with the large initial investment.
I'm just waiting for the designer colors and patterns to become available. |

In high school, one of our "away" cross-country meets was at a high school with a cinder track. The last quarter-mile of the course was, naturally, a lap around said track. After I finished, I turned around to watch the rest of the pack come in and saw a group of six or seven runners go down in a heap on the last turn. Lots of scraped knees, elbows, hands, &c. I wonder if the athletic director was sadistic or if cinders were just incredibly cheap surfacing material. |
