Wondered if anybody as a better suggestion for my 1111 than a Bone nut and Saddle? I see the ads for the tusq stuff all over the place any body perfer them over the Bone? IF I have any Christmas money left over that will be the next thing on my list.

I did the changeover to tusq nut and saddle on my classical a year ago (not from bone, but from the crappy plastic oem) and did notice an improvement in tone. I have not been able to compare to bone yet, but it has been said that bone is not as hard and therefore is prone to soft spots that affect consistency in tone. That is what I have read in the reviews, but I am by no means an expert on that. You may want to post that question on a classical guitar forum board.

why are you not satisfied with the bone?
if it was plastic I could see some concern but what don't you like about the sound with the bone?

Can someone explain? If hardness and consistency is the driver, then why don't you see brass, aluminum, steel, magnesium, titanium, etc. for nuts and saddles?

I could be wrong but I think it's more to do with density.

I think some have just decided it's BBBBad-to-da-bone.

So, if the bone comes from older cows is it less dense?

Congrats Vince!

Ummm, I would think the opposite, in that they're one of nature's calcium sources.

Now, petrified cow bone is another 'nut' altogether...

Believe it or not (I like to fiddle with things) I made some bone shims (tapered) for under the saddle of my UTE. The ovation plasic ones, and even a delrin shim sounded better to me for some reason.

Back to the Tusq saddles... Be cautious about buying them online.
The ones that they say fit Ovations.... Don't.
Matter-o-fact, the slim-line type of Ovation saddles are a weird size, so you gotta match them up in person, y'know?
I have used a Tusq saddle that is an 8th of an inch short (Lengthwise) and it works.
It just don't look perfect.

Also in my CK047-Koa I have a bone saddle that is also about an 8th of an inch too short (Lengthwise)
But I increased the volume of the guitar dramatically.

On evilBay I bought four bone nuts and four compensated bone saddles for about $16 from China.
They were listed as being for Martin, but I was just going by the length and width and such.
I put one nut on that Epi LP Special to replace the crappy black plastic that chipped.
And on saddle in the CK047. And they work fine, and the price is right.
For $2 apiece, you can trash them if you don't like one.

Just wanted to share that.
