THE GOOD NEWS

Earlier this week, I was fortunate to have purchased the 1187-247 that Mike listed here on the OFC. Mike shipped the guitar this past Thursday, via priority mail, with delivery expected this coming Monday. Given the extra volume of mail/parcels that the USPS is dealing with this time of year, I was going to be real surprised if the package actually arrived on Monday. Well, this morning I happened to be at the door when the postman came by and he said, “I’ve got a guitar in the truck for you.” Yippee! The planets lined up and the package arrived a day early. This is my lucky day.

THE BAD NEWS

The postman returned about 10 minutes later with a guitar sized box. After signing for the package I turned to carry it inside and was immediately met by my wife who was standing prepared to intercept the goods. She says I can’t open it until Christmas! I pleaded with her that I must inspect the instrument to make sure it was not damaged in transit (in spite of the fact that the shipping carton is in perfect shape and shows no sign of abuse). At this point she begins laughing. I then explained that I don’t know Mike personally and that may have sent me a box of rocks disguised as a guitar. After all, just because he’s a well respected member of the Ovation Fan Club AND a Minister doesn’t mean that he can be trusted (desperate times call for desperate measures). By now my wife is laughing uncontrollably. Not a funny ha-ha laugh, but a sinister laugh she has when she knows she’s won. I countered with, “But I have to check it out, that’s a Taylor box and Mike was supposed to send me an Ovation guitar.” By this time she’d grown tired of watching me whimper, so she quietly turned to walk away. I did manage to get the last word in, “yes Dear.”

God bless our spouses who let us indulge in our hobbies.

Thanks Mike! I'll update you next week.

Pretty funny Nick!

Last year I got a 07 Collectors for Christmas. My wife and daughter wouldn't let me see it either, in spite of my begging, so I waited til no one was around, found it and "inspected it for damage". Well I got caught and the guitar was really well hidden after that. When I opened it on Christmas morning this is what I found...

They had a real good laugh on that one.

I'm sure your #47 will be fine. They are amazing guitars!

Vague, but sounds like good news! The little smiley face strikes me as a good omen.

Mike,
Thanks for posting the pictures. They, like the guitar itself, are beautiful. I can't improve upon them, but I'll come up with something.

THE GREAT NEWS

So, Christmas rolls around and I finally get to open the box containing the 47RI. I must admit reading Fletcher’s recent experience with the broken headstock had me nervous when I opened the case. Opening the case I first encountered a manila envelope that Mike had received from Ovation that contained the COA, plot, and some other related documentation. I lifted the envelope to reveal the body of the guitar and I think my heart leapt; the guitar is just beautiful. When I picked it up I immediately noticed that it’s even lighter than my 08C, which I attribute to the lack of electronics.

For the next few minutes I just admired the guitar. The carved headstock, bridge, heal, and other appointments really put the 47RI into a totally different category than any other guitar I have ever owned and I’ve owned some nice guitars. It makes me think that a fine furniture maker had some input into the design. I’d never seen a brass strap ring on a guitar before, and at first I wasn’t sure if I liked it, but I don’t think the 47RI would be as pretty without it. Mike had replaced the tuner buttons with Rothesay custom walnut tuner buttons. Initially, I thought I might go back to the original buttons, but having thought about it, I like Mike’s decision and will leave them on. They’re just perfect on this guitar.

Mike had removed one shim and the action of the guitar is perfect for my finger style. The neck is a joy to play. I tend to hang around the first seven or so frets, but this neck makes it so easy to play all along its length. I really like the contour back of the 08C and was afraid I wouldn’t like the deep bowl as much. Though they are different, I like them both. For some reason the deep bowl seems a bit smaller than the contour, but that must be a perception thing.

Mike had detuned the guitar prior to shipping and I used a Peterson VS-F to tune it up. Mike has EXP16s on the guitar and it sounds a bit brighter than my 08C strung with EJ16s. Both instruments have hand-laid fiberglass backs although the 08C is contoured and both have slotted headstocks. I’ll eventually experiment with other strings, but for now I can’t imagine that it could sound any better. As I mentioned in an earlier posting, I had never played, seen, or touched an Adamas guitar prior to the 08C. I’m absolutely blown away by the sound of the 47RI. The volume and clarity is better than any guitar I’ve ever played and it responds well to finger style or the pick. It’s just a joy to play, but of course I’m preaching to the choir (or at least 86 members of the choir). Even though some might consider the 47RI to be a collector’s guitar, it’s going to be my player.

Thanks to Mike for passing the guitar on to me, and thanks to everyone on the forum for your interest and well wishes. I tried to take some pictures indoors but I can’t get any decent pictures with a flash. Once the snow clears I’ll try to get outside and get a few pictures.

Nick, as much as I love to keep as many as possible, it isn't possible and bottom line is they need to be played...I loved this guitar and yet, it wasn't getting played: original 1688's and 1687's and the OFC II will do that...lol
I was determined that it go to a Member...that's why I could not bring myself to put it on eBay...
And so, a new chapter begins and someone else gets to experience a world class guitar!
Nick, enjoy it and play it well!
Merry Christmas!!!
