Location: Back in the Valley of the Sun Mesa Az. | Man what a ride...Looks like Norseman who turned Saguaro Man may soon be frozen tundra man again!
This economy is a trip. Used to be the hardest part of relocating would be to find work where you want to live...heck, that was the easy part...trying to sell my house in this market has been impossible! 6.5 acres in Northern Minnesota, set up for horses and whatever animals you would want...prime whitetail hunting literally out your back door. 2500 sq. ft. home with 14 ft. vaulted ceilings, three huge skylights, three bay windows, all new applicances, two gas fireplaces and one soapstone wood stove w/hearth,...great location just outside of town...listed over the past two years between 192,000.00-185,000.00..can't get an offer (other than contract for deed).
Anyone want to trade for a 1537? I'll throw in two ponies and a rifle.

Location: Vernon CT | For what you're asking in Ct you get a 1200-1500 ft home built in the 40's-50's and maybe a 1/2 acre or less with plumbing problems!!!! oh, and thousands of pets in the form of Ants and termites! :eek: :D :p |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | Another reason I got the heck out of Connecticut. The house I bought in Hot Springs has three bedrooms, a wrap-around screened-in porch, and a one car garage. What I spent wouldn't have bought me a small chicken coop in Connecticut.
Norse, I don't have a 1537 to spare, but what'll you take for that soapstone woodstove? I have a couple of Taylors on the wall here. One to trade for the woodstove, and one to burn in it? :D |

Norse(hard times)man1 I'll take it, I just have to sell my house :) . We moved into a pretty nice area about 15 years ago, put in hardwood floors throughout, new windows (34 of them!), re-sided the little bit of siding we have, new roof, new garage door, etc. Roughly put in almost 100k and we would be lucky to get what we paid for the house originally. At one point five or six years ago we probably could have gotten double what we paid, and that was before we did the windows. Times are a tough, that is for sure. |

Location: Budd Lake, NJ | Here in Jersey, my little (1,064 square feet) ranch with two bedrooms, 1 bath, eat-in kitchen, decent living room and 1-car detached garage on a 100x180 lot cost me about what you're asking for yours, Norsey--and that was before I sunk a lifetime's worth of good guitars into it for repairs; right now, the taxes are up over 6 grand. (And, if I sell it in order to buy yours, the state will assess me an "exit tax" in order to leave.)
One good thing about its' size--it's reached capacity for guitars, so I guess I've reached "one in, one out" like some of the rest of you.

...ever try shoveling one/two/three foot of snow off your sidewalks, driveway,roof, in 10-40 below weather...only to go out and do it again the next day?!

Location: Boise, Idaho | Below zero most nights last week for the first time in 10 years. Rained all day today (but 15 inches of snow on the mountain means the ski area opens Thursday.)
We built the house about 15 years ago and probably couldn't get more than we spent if we sold it today. We don't need the space, but can't find anything smaller that won't cost more. Things will turn around a bit if you can afford to wait it out. |

I hear you about prices...about four years ago I toyed with the idea of selling. Several realtors said they could sell it within a matter of weeks if I would sell for about $265.00.

Location: Huntington Beach | We're all screwed. The train derailed. We did it to ourselves. Used to be folks bought what they could afford and used it forever. My Dad bought a couple acres, built a small house for cash, raised 6 kids - and lived there 'til he died. 60 years later my Mom still lives there - original windows, original footprint - only upgraded the bathroom after Dad died. Can you imagine living in your house for over 50 years without a mortgage. And somehow we got ourselves into a mindset that we always need bigger, better, faster, newer, shinier - ask my Dad what kind of car he drives - "paid for". What's the cure? Sure I did the same thing. My wife and I are sitting here in a 4 bedroom 3 bath with bonus room big beautiful house near the beach that we spent a fortune upgrading - just the 2 of us.
Very busy - but no money.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I guess there are still pockets of that around here. Folks who have had homes in their family for generations. The only reason they have mortgages is for improvements and such... but there is a high percentage of folks who just own their home.
Unfortunately it's backfiring a bit. As things get developed, elderly couples who initially spent maybe around a 100K, or maybe their parents or parents parents spent it... or even much less on their several-hundred acre chunk of earth that they raised all their grandkids on... are now retired and having to pay taxes and 1.x million dollar land.... sooo.. they stop paying their taxes and hope that they die before the state, county or whomever can come lock'em up.
Really cuts into the guitar buying funds... |

My house there would be around $450 in Florida a few years back and it's not all that big.
2-story, 3 br, 2.5 bath on just under an acre, 1800 sf not including full basement.
My Uncle & Aunt built it for me so I got it cheap (relatively speaking) but houses close to mine run 160 to 200K. |

Location: Utah | We never had a huge runup in real estate values here, so the drop has been small, maybe 15% depending on exact location. The city even reduced our property tax assessment this year!
The big financial mistake I made was letting money ride in the stock market 10 years ago. We bought cars and stuff on credit so the money could keep growing in the stock market. When tech stocks crashed in 2000 I finally got out of the market with the same $ I started with, plus a bunch of debt. :rolleyes: We've dug out of that mess just in time to have kids going to college.
Could be worse though. I've been able to buy a few very nice guitars in the past 3 years, and I still have a job with one of the only profitable airlines. All I need now is to fund my retirement somehow. |

now as the economy spins i am happy that i listened to mom & dad.
