| Mark your calendars and make your travel plans, two month notice! The third installment of G8rBowl will be held the MLK Holiday weekend (seemed to work well last couple of times) - Fri Jan 15th 2010 onward.
Plenty of space for folks to crash (beds, couches, air mattresses), lotsa food and drink (don't need to tell previous attendees), great company, some fairly OK guitars, and most of all Music, Music and more Music!
Hope to see you all! |

That would do it! A sleeping bag, a guitar pick and a guitar, that's all I need. Yes sir, a sleeping bag , a guitar pick, and a guitar. A stand for the guitar would be nice though. That's the ticket, a sleeping bag, a guitar pick, a guitar, and a guitar stand. That's all I need.
Wait a sec, a sleeping bag, guitar pick, guitar, guitar stand, and the ability to to play the damn thing. Yes, that's ALL I need!
Can't wait to see everyone there.

I'd say bring the queen, but as SWMBO says, "Gawd forbid 2 men should share the same bedding. Who knows, one of them might wake up in the middle of the night and decide they wanna try out some homo sex." To which I reply, "And your point is?" |

That's a real guy and he is, ah, a wee bit simple. Those aren't his arms. They hired a real banjoest to play and had him crouch down behind and stick his arms through the coat. Steve knows who the guy is, met him a few years back. |

And the "recently tuned" one was new to me too, although that one kinda reminds me of that ebay add where the guy was talking about "rusty strings but it still sounds good". (I actually had a lady try to sell me a guitar once and she thought that because it still had the original strings it was worth more. ) |

Taken from Whateverhappenedto.net:
"This 16-year-old boy from Rabun County, Georgia was the only "authentic" local to play the role of The Banjo Boy in John Boorman's disturbing hit movie of 1972 Deliverance. Billy was hand-picked from his local elementary school largely due to his "look" ( Billy's large head, skinny body, odd-shaped eyes and moronic grin had sadly branded him a poster-child for inbreeding and mental deficiency).
The actual irony is that Billy was neither "retarded" nor even able to "fake" playing the banjo. "
Dueling Banjos He also had a small part in Tim Burton's FABULOUS movie entitled "Big Fish"

I dunno.
I'm just sayin'.
Per Wikipedia:
In his famous scene, Redden plays the instrumental "Dueling Banjos" opposite actor Ronny Cox on guitar.
Redden could not actually play the banjo. A musician reached around from behind Redden which was disguised using careful camera angles. |

I didn't think the technology was good enough at that time to pull off such a special effect, but I think Wikipedia is probably a better source than whateverhappenedto.com.
Who knows? If he WAS playing, you'd think Mr. Reddin would be giggin' somewhere instead of running a diner in Georgia, no? If he WAS it's kind of sad for him to not get recognized for it. And if he wasn't, it's weird that he's posing with his banjo ... anyway, to stay on topic (sort of), maybe he'll read this and show up at the G8r Bowl gatherin'! ;p

Besides... conflicting stories is what makes it so interesting. (Yawn.) |

As it now stands the weather guessers say:
Chance for rain and scattered T-storms.
High Temps from upper 60s to lower 70s. |

I had planned on bringing the 1680 and the Folklore. But I'll take requests... |

I'm not going to say anything about the colour of that guitar, last time at G8Rs I made a reference to something about one of TJ's guitars and he took offence to it so I'm keeoing quiet this time. |

Beal, that color looks a little different in person. I'm trying to get used to it. It's not one of my favorites, but the guitar sounds real nice. |

That Adamas has been all over the US. I bought it off Ebay, sent it to the mothership and they installed a NOS neck and resprayed the bowl, I traded it to Stephen for a 30CM, bought it back off him, sold it to Beggin, and now bought it back off him. |

It was great to finally meet all the guys and play their great guitars...I don't even know who's guitars I was playing. I only played the one I brought for about 5 minutes. I kinda fell in love with a Collings and decided that they probably ARE worth the money.
More importantly, after listening to Beal play and sing his fantastic original stuff, I have a new goal for 2010... WRITE SOME DAMN SONGS!! |

My biggest surprise was when TJ and I walked into the G8r Casa, and there was this Yankee cat that looked like he swallowed a canary... Yepper, apparently ol' BT Bob didn't get enough abuse at the SSSJ...
The friendship and music was awesome, the guitars seductive and the food too good to describe!

The company was great, the music was really great, and the food was fantastic. Jhimli did a wonderful job constantly whipping up a tasty treat. The shrimp and grit were fabled and did not disappoint. Outstanding!
It was good to see old friends again and to put a faces to a couple of OFC'ers I had not met yet. Everyone needs to make one of these regional get togethers at the their first opportunity.

Also thanks to everybody who came, I was good to see everybody. Ya'll are a talented bunch!
And Serge, those are my guitar stands. I didn't miss them until I was figuring out where to put my guitars. Good thing I didn't bring a bass home with me! I also left my cell phone charger there. |

We arrived back home safely last night after meandering up the east coast. Many thanks to Jhimli and Serge for hosting this rag-tag group again. Nicky and I had a great time seeing everyone (Bob!) and meeting Cholloway and Darkbar for the first time.

| Almost forgot about that. Tone only test, everybody voted on which pick they thought produced the best tone when I strummed/struck individual notes on a Takamine EF75J amplified thru a Genz-Benz Shen100.
The choices were:
1. Genuine tortoise
2. Blue Chip
3. Read Bear
4. Pearse Tortex
5. D'Andrea Pro plec
6. Fender cellulose
7. Dunlop nylon or Delrin, can't remember exactly
2, 3 and 4 are made from cellulose, each company with a (supposedly) proprietary formulation/process, and are supposed to be the closest thing to genuine tortoise that chemists can synthesize ona large scale.
Cost:
1. Unavailable/illegal for sale, you pretty much have to happen across one at a garage sale (or know someone who knows someone, then pay a king's ransom).
2. $30-40 (yes, that's each)
3. $20-30 ditto
4. $2-4 each
5. ~$7/dozen
6. pennies or less
7. pennies or less
The verdict:
Round 1: 6 & 7 fell out.
Round 2: 2 & 3 fell out.
Round 3: 1 was considered "best" by the majority, with 4 and 5 pretty much tied. |
