It's been my go to git since I adopted it from Andrew in June. It even made the SSSJ with me.
So, what's the 'O' Hive Mind's suggestions/inputs? |

It can be fixed but it will stay the lines somehow cracks at lower string area of the bridge. Let the factory know and they may replace for a new one. |

Call the factory. They can make it right..... |

| That happened to my 1975 about 10 years ago only not quite as bad. Repair was done under warranty and you can't tell except that the bridge looks a bit new for a guitar that age. |

I'll email John the pics and see if they have an 'history' on it.
Just on a positive note, this is the first git that I have had 'give up' on me. Just too bad it was this one! |

Kim and John already know about it, I'll bet. They don't post here much, but they're always here. |

Mother will unbolt the neck and make a new Bowl/Top for you. Good time to specify what electronics you want. |

As everyone else has said, you need to send it to Kim for it to be repaired correctly but I hope you have others to play for a while.
I just requested a return authorization for a repair from him and was told to contact him again after the first of next year.
They no doubt still have more work than they can handle right now. |

And why exactly did the factory decide to stop using bridge bolts? |

I am wondering if I should lower the stringtension on mine as long as it's resting in the case. |

I'm not buying the sauna theory, she spent 2 years in Hawaii at better than 80% humidity and two summers in Virginia.
Did you put heaver strings on it than the Elixir mediums that were on it? |

Now I'm wondering if a FUD Burst is a possibility... When I had my FUD rebuilt, John said that burst does not work well with the cedar top or I would have had it done. As far as the mojo, mine sounded fantastic from day 1.

I had put on a new set of Elixir meds just prior to the SSSJ. I'm pretty sure it had lights on it when I adopted it. The meds really sound great on the FUD.
Jack,
Thanx! That's very reassuring.
Meuti,
Apparently my FUD has had issues all along. A new top should take care of that.
So, just keep yours in normal tuning, enjoy and forget you saw this post!

Sorry Iffy, I couldn't resist. I guess I'm one of those people who cover their sadness with humor. But I AM heartbroken for you. I know how that feels, after having lost my Gibson all those years ago. It still hurts! But at least with yours you know you can get it fixed up better than new. I hope the nightmares subside very soon and you're back to feeling good again. |

Ditto Woody +1
This is the true risk with cedar. A few builders (notably Lowden) seem to have exceptional luck and skill with cedar tops but most small builders have gotten away from cedar tops due to warranty issues. |

The repair guy Gruhn recommend was unbeliveable and the repair is barely noticable Cost me about $250.00 . That was almost 10 years ago and Sonny has since passed away but it looks like his work will stand the test of time. HOpe your repair will to. |

My FUD has JUST had the Spa treatment...
Replace top/bowl
Replace bridge
Install elects
Gloss neck!
Level and dress frets
Adjust & set action
String & play test
...now all they have to do is ship it back to me ;)
Sent it to them and let them do their magic. |

I loved the ol' top, but this one has more bass presence with sweet clear highs. It's a different, but better sounding FUD. And the wood grain is tight and straight. Just wonderful... Happy camper here!

fear not..... It will be great again.

Yes, as per the MS's pre-repair evaluation:
Replace top/bowl assy
Replace bridge
Level & dress frets
Adjust & set action
I'm still very impressed with the sound of this 'new' FUD. It has something special that the ol' one didn't. Maybe it has something to do with the wood under the ol' bridge. |

since this was not a design problem but, rather, an inherent inability of Cedar to hold up to all that string pull...
might this happen again some day?
If it was mine, I might be tempted to use bolts. Maybe a couple of Tortoise dots on top. |
