Hello,
I searched the board here and googled to find some info on a black Ovation 1674 cutaway model. I could not come up with anything. There seems to be only info on natural color models.
Can anyone please tell me about this model? I have my eye on a used one, but would like to know a little bit about it.

It's a nylon string, black color, black neck (back), cutaway, has the stacked knob pre-amp.

Thanks!!!

Search on 1624 , which is the non-cutaway version of the 1674. The cutaways are very rare compared to the 1624's. Not sure if I've even heard of a black 1674. Mostly naturals with the occasional sunburst. Good luck!

Oh, and welcome aboard, stick around and have some fun!

Thanks for the reply.
The idea is though to find some info that would show it's a legit one. I am a little suspicious that I cannot find info on a black one.

The 1674 was only produced for 2 years, and black ones are probably pretty rare. Don't be surprised if you can't find any info on it. Stuff like that happened. For example, I've only seen one black 1537, and one burst 87 Collectors.
If it has a sticker with 1674 in it, and the finish looks as good as a factory job, it probably is a black 1674.
Congrats on owning a rarity, and welcome to the OFC!

I don't own it yet. Thanks for the welcome here, it looks like a friendly board. I was looking through various posts here over the weekend and found a lot of useful info. Just nothing on the black one :(

I did a google search on 'ovation 1674'. The only useful hit it came up with was this thread...

The Ovation designation for an original black finished instrument is a -5 suffix following the model number. Therefore, if the label reads 1674-5, it was originally produced by teh factory as a black 1674. A -1 suffix would indicate sunburst finish, while a -4 suffix would indicate a natural finish.

If there is no suffix after the model number, or if there is no hand-written or typed explanation on the label, the only indication of an origianl factory color, would be a professional finish that conforms 100% to Ovation standards, as it is almost impossible to recreate an Ovation finish without the factory technology and equipment.

Incidentally, the only two Ovation catalogs that list the model 1674 (1983 and 1984 Ovation Information), list available colors as sunburst (-1), natural (1-4) and black (-5).

Therefore, this model was offered in black, although as previously stated, it is a rare color that is seen very infrequently. As a rule, any Ovation nylon string guitar with a black finish is rarely seen.

Bought it yet?
I think someone here had a black 1713 or 1763. Also rare. I'm not a fan of black guitars because they show my greasy fingerprints, but a black nylon string O would be worth it.

Now I own it!!!
What a nice neck. Overall it's in good condition and sounds great.
I was very surprised how loud and warm it sounds. Plugged in, it defenitely has that John McLaughlin Ovation nylon sound from the guitar trio days.
The string tension (hard tension strings) is perfect and much "stiffer" than my other nylon string classical guitar, which makes it great for using a pick. Thanks for the serial number tip. I will check that when I get home tonight.

Actually I beg to differ. That's the nice things about salad bowls errrr, I mean OVATIONS. Everyone looks pretty much the same. Let me guess, this 1674 has the same dimensions as every other cutaway Ovation - check. It's got a deep plastic bowl - check, I know what that looks like. Rosette? yup usually all the same. Black finish - check, that's easy to visualize. The headstock, lip and logo - check, check, and check.

There you go, I know exactly what the guitar looks like. And by the way, it looks DAMN NICE !!

Just my $.02 worth. I'd bet a glossy black finish top over a shiny/glossy bowl would be particularly striking, if impossible to keep clean.

I'll try to post some pictures. After all I could not find any pictures of this model anywhere either.
As far as I understand it it's a medium size bowl.

Does anyone want to comment on the build in pickup/preamp? Is it good, great, bad? Can it be upgraded? Thanks.
