I purchased the '84 1537 Lefty Elite that was on ebay a couple of weeks ago. It arrived today, safe and sound. I was hoping it would get here Saturday so I'd have the weekend to play with it. Oh, well. Except for a very small ding in the finish, which I knew about, and a very small surface crack in one of the epilet's, the guitar is gorgeous! I'm not sure if anything can, or needs to be done about the crack. The electronics are all working but I'll have to experiment more with that when I have time.

I know, I know, you want PICS! lol It's going to be a couple days. I also have more to say so will post all at the same time.

I love this guitar!

Wow, Dweez, that guitar is beautiful! I've seen Depa's. It's gorgeous, too. Congrats Depa! I know how excited you were! I can't wait to see your photos!

Congrats, Depa. Those are among the best Ovations ever made, much sought after by people who know about and want a great player. Those of us who have them rarely (if ever) let them go. I love the deep bottom end - without overwhelming the mids and highs - of mine. The neck is a joy to play, too.

Actually, the 1537's were built in Bloomfield. When production was transferred to New Hartford the materials on the guitar were changed and it became the 1718....

LOL Mark. That would almost need to be a given, wouldn't it? ;)

Thanks everyone.

My 1537 has one of the most beautiful sunbursts I've ever seen.

Since Mondays are my 'normal' day off I'm taking the rest of this afternoon as comp time. :)
I've taken pics, but it's probably going to take me the rest of the afternoon to get them posted. I know the information part of how to do it, it's the execution that I'm a bit slow at. lol

BIG THANK YOUs to MOODY and WILLA. I was on the forum for only three days when I pm'd Moody, introduced myself and asked him about this particular 1537. Without knowing me from Adam, he replied to a multitude of messages and willing gave of his time and knowledge.

Several days later the process repeated itself when I drew Willa into the mix asking about her experiences with ebay. While I use to be a frequent ebayer I had never purchased anything of this magnitude before. I feel really bad for you, Willa, that after calming my own concerns and fears that you have had such an awful experience yourself.

Oh, one more mention. In my very first post IFFY asked what guitars I had and made a comment implying that I would be owning more in the near future. That was the furthest thing from my mind. I had no intention of buying anymore guitars and almost told him so. Besides I figured that yes, being left-handed, I had a built in GAS reducer. Geesh! Look what you folks have done to me! ;) And I thank you all. :)

Ok, I better get working on these pics.

Seems like I tried for a year before I finally got a 1537. You did well. As far as the OFC causing GAS, that's pretty much the purpose of this club. I predict you'll be very happy with your 1537, maybe for life, but it will peak your interest in other Ovations.

NOW you tell me. lol It already has peaked my interest in other Ovations. But I think I'm going to pass on it. Playing this one will consume a great deal of time for quite awhile.

Nice guitar, Depa. 1537, Lefty AND a sunburst. There can't be more than a few of those around. You did good and I'm glad everything worked out so well. But watch that Moody character ... his middle name is Trouble.

You're right. It was Moosup. They made the first Adamii there as well.

Beal or Alison can confirm this. I got the info from Nick Macklin and am too lazy to pull out my notes....

What a beauty... even if you do have to play it upside down.

De, what a great get!
Really gorgeous!! I'm afraid my days of playing the deep ones are pretty much over, so that's one particular case of the jonesins' I won't get. I hope I get to hear her in person; if she sounds like her looks, she's definitely a winner.

Now that I've had a bit more time to check out my guitar I have a question regarding the electronics.

With my earlier very quick check I thought the guitar was playing through my amp. I've discovered that it isn't. I'm just getting noise from plugging the cord in and out. The seller did say that it had never been plugged in and that it had never had a stereo cord or a battery in it.

So, my question is, does this require a battery and, if so, what type of battery and how to I take care of that? Or is there something else that needs to be done to it? ok, guess that was really four questions. lol

Deb, yes it needs a 9v battery.

I don't own a 1537 but according to the specs
it's a two knobber.

The battery holder will be accessible through the cover on the back of the bowl.

Thanks AJ. All I've been able to find is that it has 2 knob stereo electronics. I did take the back cover off earlier and was able to see everything...except for where a batter would go. I don't want to start tugging on stuff and risking breaking something.

Do you see next to the 2 knobbers a black plastic screw? When you take off the back hatch and reach up inside of the guitar to where that screw is, you'll find that it holds in place a small black box.

While holding the black box with one hand, and pushing it tighter against the body of the guitar, use a flat head screw driver and turn the screw 1/4 turn counter clock wise. The box will be released. (somebody here's gotta have pics of this). Carefully pull it out of the hatch. You can slide off the cover of it (it's on there snuggly), pull out the old battery and put in the new. Installation is the reverse.

Here's a link to an owners manuel which has the only picture I could find

http://www.ovationtribute.com/Catalogues/1984_Blue_Ovation_Owner_Ma...

It's going to tak a little practice before you figure it totally out, but all of us who have older Ovations have done. So can you.

Moody gave a great explanation. A description for all type of battery compartments is also included in the FAQ , about midway down.

Does anyone know why the 1537 was discontinued after 2 years and morphed in to the regular model 1718?

Be sure to plug it into the Mono jack. If you plug it into the stereo jack, you'll think there's something wrong with the pickup on some of the strings. (Tested by a certified "idiotproof" tester.)

Deb, the battery cover is on there tight. Otherwise it would fall off while moving the guitar around. Seems to me that it always slides off sliding towards the end of the box where the wires come out. Stay with it, you'll get it.

On another note on the same subject, I don't know why, but getting the box back in and secured on my GC RI is a total pain. It should be easy and it's not....

See, that's taking this reissue stuff too far. Why couldn't they have put the popout box in? Why "reissue" the bad with the good?

Agreed. My big complaint is the stereo electronics in the OFC slotheads. The original guitars didn't have them. They were 2 knobber mono p/u's. And the strap mounting ring in the heel of the neck a a weak point on a fine guitar. Should have done away with it.

Oh well. At least on the GC RI they went with the 1980's A braced tops instead of the 1970's VT bracing. I remember when I first saw one in CT at a gathering. I was very prepared to not like it and instead was very happy with what had been done....

Mark, thanks for the mono tip. I'm having a bit of a problem with the 5th string sounding. The 6th string really booms no matter what I do. Need to play with the adjustment on the amp and deep/bright control on the guitar more to try to get a good balance. But it is working.

Moody, I agree. It's a TOTAL pain trying to get that back in again.

Personally, I love the OFC I model just the way it is. Anything different would be just another limited edition custom, not that there is anything wrong with that, but the OFC I does have a strong connection to the originals that would be absent in an updated custom.
