The Graduate. 1968. Simon and Garfunkle. Best selling album of the Year. Knowing this enabled me to win a contest on a radio call-in show 25 years ago. Another that really grew on me when I was studying Civil War leadership models is the soundtrack to Ted Turner's Gettysburg.

I'm not a big fan of movie soundtracks and only have a handful in my CD collection. My top three would be (in no particular order):

American Beauty
Monster
Midnight Express

Of those, only Midnight Express has any vocals. All three feature compositions that are rather far out, but I think they are still highly listenable.

I am thinking "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" though BTs Big Chill is one I had not thought about. The Graduate is another...I should have invested in plastics..

"An American Werewolf in London". Most all songs in the soundtrack had a connection to the moon. Very cool.

Yes, I love The Commitments, I just found out that was the first move of a "trilogy". I'm not sure how the others are related except they have the same lead actor. The Snapper and The Van are the other two.

Best soundtrack from an unheard of movie - music from Cal by Mark Knopfler. I've not been able to find the movie anywhere but a friend gave me the soundtrack and it's great.

All great ones, keep em coming! How about the soundtrack from "Backbeat"?

In case you did not catch it the movie is about the early days of the Beatles, of course covers but it does a good job of showing the venues the Beatles played in early and the energy they put into the shows.

If I may add to my previous list...
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, music by Bryan Adams and Hans Zimmer
Disney's animated Tarzan, songs by Phil Collins

And my least favorite has to be Jurassic Park. John Williams is a brilliant composer, but I find the movie's main theme insufferable.

IMO, a true sound track is music recorded just for the film and is specific to a theme.
Anything else is just a mix tape.

I don't know if this counts as a soundtrack but I'll throw it out there anyway:

Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds".

Mark Knopfler - "Local Hero"

I disagree - if the music is integral to the movie - like "The Big Chill" or "The Commitments" then I think it goes beyond just a mix.

Going down a list and picking some Motown tunes is more a matter of convience.

Pretty much any Charlie Chaplin film.

Wouldn't Charlie Chaplin be a score rather than a soundtrack?

Nobody said Phantom of the Paradise, maybe for a reason.

Rocky Horror is pretty cool.

Elizabethtown Original Score (by Nancy Wilson)

Cameron Crowe Movies always have amazing music and this one had enough content to do 2 soundtrack CDs and one more, the Original Score, of all instrumental stuff, most of which was done by Cameron's talented wife.

Black Hawk Down

Barra Barra by Rachid Taha is butt stomping:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUbzX3izyw4&feature=related

This version has him drunk on his ass and staggering but it's still good. He's saying something like, Out there, life is hard, Out there, people lie etc. Fit the movie perfectly, I like the blend of punk, techno and arabic rock.

PS Black hawk down was a great book.
