this has probably already been done, but I don't care....

Here's the scenario....you're at a music store and ask the salesperson if he can pull down that guitar from way up high...

Or you're at a party and someone says, "oh do you play?" and hands you a guitar...

Everyone's watching and listening...

What's the very first tune that rolls off your fingertips?

"Dope Smokin' Blues" segue straight into into "Before You Accuse Me", then an easy singalong that everybody knows, like "Jack and Diane" or "Pink Houses"

I'm thinking, I'm thinking... and I'm thinking I may not have one.

But when I sit down to play, here are the ones I play a lot:

Just One Victory (Todd Rundgren)

Lost and Found (Kevn Kinney)
-also enjoy it on uke

Undergound Umbrella (Drivin' n' Cryin')
-or another DnC song

Soulshine (Govt. Mule)

Pinstripe Suit (Cigar Store Indians)

Memories Of You (Ryan Adams)
-or another RA song like "A Kiss Before I Go" or "Magnolia Mountain"

And thanks to Crimson Lake for tabbing it-
Six O'Clock in the Morning (Darrell Scott)

Store--Classical Gas. I always seem to play Am as the first chord on a guitar and it goes from there.
No one has asked me to play at a party since the early 80s.

When I'm in a guitar store, I try not to be noticed in case a real guitarist is listening.

At a party where everyone's too p*ssed to know the difference...
Needle and the Damage Done
followed by;
Old Man

Then the harp holder comes out for;
Out on the Weekend
My My Hey Hey.

Seems to be a pattern here...

If SWMBO isn't around, I might throw in Heart of Gold too. (She HATES that song.)

What, no 'Stairway..' citations? :)

For me, it's all mood and type of the guitar.

12 string? 'Hear my train acomin' (underappreciated Hendrix piece) Maybe 'Tangerine'

6 string? Totally depends on my mood or what I've been listening to recently. Could be a little Alice in Chains Unplugged stuff or Clapton (no Layla, though.. that's too hackneyed)

It's funny, I always fall into an Amaj or a Cmaj7. I do a coupla runs from there that I made up that sound impressive, but because I've done 'em a million times, come very easy to me. After that brief warm up, I'm ready to play. Usually a Keb 'Mo tune.

Love that song. Jas, we'll have to play it together some time.

Music store, whatever I happen to be working on at the time. Parties... eh. I don't play at parties.
But if I do, I play something like "Mr. Guilty", or maybe "Powderfinger".

Hurt So Good or maybe Night Moves

Crimsonlake: Mood For A Day is the song that inspired me to learn the guitar. That was in 1984. I learned about half of it. Still haven't mastered it, but I should make another attempt.

I rarely play in the guitar shop. Everyone there is better than me. I can hear them snickering when I start to think about playing something.

Guitar store? What's that....?
Those rare occasions I'm in one, several finger-picking patterns that tell me right away whether the guitar is worth the effort or not. (Usually, it's not.....)
Party? "Roses in the Snow," "Gold Watch and Chain," or "You Alone," "Amazing Grace."

I'm not in guitar stores very often, and when I am, it is very rare that I see anything of interest to play. The last time was at least six months ago in the special acoustic room in the back of the store where all the expensive stuff is displayed, and I tried about a half dozen different models. Nobody else was present and I just noodled with some quick chord changes in the upper register to test the feel and set-up. As usualy, I departed unimpressed.

I usually either play a little of Tears in Heaven or Mood for a Day if trying out an acoustic. For bass maybe the beginning of Spirit of the Radio

They sell guitars in stores??

I can't remember the last time I was in a music store that had anything worth checking out, but when checking out a guitar in general I have a few goto riffs that focus on tone and playability for me.

Mostly just riffs from tunes like "Say What You Will" by Fastway, and a couple of riffs from my tunes that are similar to the "inside" chords used in the lead break of "Still of the Night" by Whitesnake. And then just some other lead riffs of my own.

If it's an Acoustic I'm checking out, I again have a few riffs that pretty much define "my style" and let me evaluate the instrument. The harmonics from Roundabout by Yes, the opening riff from "Alone Again" by Dokken but mostly riffs from my own Acoustic guitar tunes.

For me a guitar either sounds and plays how I want it, or it doesn't. Doesn't take more than a couple of bars to know and either check the price tag, or move on.

In a store: What ever the hell I feel like playing at the moment and I don't care about the thoughts of the sales child or whoever else is listening.

If I'm trying out an instrument, I'm trying out an instrument, not showing off.

In a social situation wherein a guitar unexpectedly appears: I never play first but watch everyone else. I won't volunteer to play, but if asked I'll just fingerpick something (since that's all I do anymore). If I happen to notice I'm the best guitarist there, I'll downplay my ability. If I notice I'm not the best guitarist there, I'll downplay it even more.

Acoustic (if someone's listening): intro to 'Roundabout' and/or 'Ballad of the Yarmouth Castle'

If not listening: Start with Aminor and just noodle around until it turns into something recognizable.

Electric: 'Mystery Train' or something bluesy in E. If I get to play with affects, sometimes 'Sharp Dressed Man'

Only time I've been asked to play in front of people in last 10 years is with daughters, so (tremble, quiver) it's usually Puff the Magic Dragon. Which incidentally keeps me on the up and up, since playing that song through eternity would be my worst version of hell.

I usually start out with "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most". Then I go into something I wrote, followed by "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring". That lets me know how the guitar sounds in the styles that I play.

At a party, if there is a singer present, it's usually "Summertime" or some other vocal piece. If there is no singer there, I usually don't play. Actually I don't go to parties much anymore. I spend so much time at the shop, being around people that I would rather go home and have some rare and precious alone time.

I do it two different ways. I play an acoustic version with open chords that I learned about eight hundred years ago. But when the kids needed to fill out their song list, I taught them a version using bar chords, with lots of minor sevenths and a really fun bass line. I too am a "computer retard", but maybe someday I'll get help to post songs too.
