It seems like there is has been more of an interest in bursts around here in the last few months. Both Ovations and other makes.

I always liked natural finishes, but am coming around to the burst side. I prefer them now.

A nice mix keeps the eye candy fresh.

All one way or the other gets pretty boring.

Ah, the Collings contingent speaks up. ;)
Some of the best bursts around come from there.

I've always been a sunburst homo.

Ovation has always done nice sunbursts, as does Collings. 4 of my 5 Collings are sunburst. Takamine actually does some nice ones. I just got their 2009 Collector and it's an amazing sunburst. Martin always did shitty bursts but at NAMM I finally saw one I rather liked.

Yes, and Yes. Complicated story, just suffice it to say that Tak 2009 Collector is in the house and it's very, very nice indeed.

That said, top billing in the sunburst department definately goes to Collings .

I think it's one of those "either you like 'em or you don't", and having the option of indifference.

Personal taste -- i don't like 'em.

But then i prefer my guitars without any shells or plastic compound on them and no fret markers on the board -- just on the side.

I love the Ovation burst as well. My first American O was a burst. Here he is, my Custom Balladeer, 22 years after I bought him. After two decades of playing, he's got that filled-in sound and is aging well looks-wise too.

Agreed. I like guitars to be natural or black, but blingless if possible. Nothing makes me lose interest in a guitar faster than a burst.

But I have my fair share of naturals, blue and black, too. :)

I only dislike ugly bursts.

Properly done they are things of beauty. I am partial to the tobacco bursts over the sunbursts.

Anyone's you look at they're ALL gorgeous. I do think that the Gloss "Bursts" are nicer then the Matte look. The glossy Burst POP OUT at you more.

It definitely has that "vintage" look with this color burst.

I've always been a fan of the tribursts, but never had one. Mine all seem to be sunburst, from yellow/gold to dark, without the red hue in between. The oddest burst I have is the one year only '79 Gibson ES-335 CRSTD. It goes from somewhat of a rose color to dark. I recall reading somewhere this was the only year they did this color. Love the guitar but not crazy about the burst.

OK ... What is a "Tobacco Burst", Dark Tobacco Burst", and "Autumn Burst"? I have read these terms on previous posts. Anybody have pics of guitars with these? G8R ... which burst is the custom legend on the left side of your four-guitar picture?

So ... my CL top above IS in fact a sunburst. The photo aparently was taken in bad lighting as the inner color DOES actually have a more golden appearance. I've also noticed there are big differences in how pronounced or subtle the outer black ring is on different guitars.

Here's a triburst ...

Compared to a sunburst ...

Collings does something interesting (unless you specify otherwise), they do slightly different bursts depending on what wood is used for the sides and back. In other words depending if the b/s are rosewood, koa or mahogany you get a slightly different burst top.

Vince - I would call my 1619 a Tobacco Burst since it's more brown than red.

As far as the differences in the black ring, you gotta consider there are what, maybe 2 folks at Ovation who paint the bursts?

Depending on who does a particular guitar, the specific paint lot, how well the tints were mixed, pressure variations in the airbrush, etc., every burst guitar is going to be ever so slightly different.

Besides just the fact that I like their bursts, that's part of their charm (for me) - they're all unique. Nobody else has one just like mine :D

My Bursts:

Left to Right - 1112, Tornado, 1118, 47RI and UKII.

I would say the Balladeer is my favorite burst. The top came back from the MS with a new topcoat that made it just glow. It's difficult to see, but the UKII is the greyburst.

After looking at all these different bursts i have determined that the one currently on my guitar is kind of blotchie looking. It looks like the factory has really come a long way in making them look nicer. The one on Dave's 1537 is probably close to what will be on mine when it comes back from the factory. As much as I like that triburst and the New England burst above, I think the sunburst will make the guitar look more like the original vintage look, but better :) I think I am going to request a little more subtle transition on the black outer ring though. I really like the way dave's looks ... you can still see the wood grain clearly.
