AlanM's post got me thinking about this.
I cannot remember when it was for me. At least 15 years, probably more. There's not a single guitar in the house that I walked out the door with (except the ones I've had for 30+ years)
I've bought from retail brick and mortar establishments but from them online, or from ebay or from people.
I buy my strings by the dozen online and for that matter just about every thing else too.
I go to the local music store here on the island too but that's for the hang, and I go to the one in North Carolina for something to do downtown. Sometimes I'll but an interesting CD.
What about you? |

I'd believe mid-1978 when I bought my Viper. I have found instruments in pawn shops and the like, or at guitar shows, but never in an actual music store.
In the past 10 years, if I did find something in a music store, I'd end up doing research and finding it cheaper online, either new or used.
At least 80% of my guitars came from eBay. |

Oh wait! I bought a Squire Telecaster 3 weeks ago! (How quick we forget) The prices will be taking a big leap this month what with the drop in our dollar.
So, yes.
For the most part, I have too many friends here to ever consider buying elsewhere....except for impulse buying like I just did. |

Since then it's been all eBay, CL, cyber-stores and here.
The B&Ms around here don't even have a decent plectrum selection! :( |

My ex had bought one to give his daughter for Christmas and brought it over to show me. I went the very next day and bought one for myself.
As the owner of a music store, I hate hearing all this on-line stuff. Mom and Pop stores of every type are being driven out of business because the big dealers like GC and those on-line can buy in such huge quantities there's no way we little dealers can compete. Some of the stuff I stock costs me more from my distributor than if I bought from Musician's Friend and resold it here. I'm not saying I blame you for trying to save money, but there may soon come a time that you won't be ABLE to run down to your local music store for strings and such, because we won't be here. |

I bought three used guitars from Guitar Center and will probably buy another in the next day or so, but the only new one I sort of bought from them was Damon's VXT.
I love visiting the classic guitar stores and hope they don't go out of business. I'd much prefer to buy from a local store and would pay more to do so, if I could find the same product in the store that I do on line. |

And when I inquire as to having the local B&Ms ordering a desired item, "Sure! That'll be M$RP + tax and at least three weeks". Then toss in the concessionaire luthier that has 'rape rate$'... |

It's not so much a matter of "research to find a better deal" but a matter of just finding what I want and variety.
I'm actually surprised more mom'n pop stores don't buy from Musicians Friend and resell, especially on popular items. Granted they can't do more than a store warranty at that point, but it would bring traffic in. Maybe some do.
Although I haven't done it with instruments, I have made purchases of multiple other items from big box stores, kept one for myself, and sold the "extras" at enough profit to pay for the one item I wanted. |

I had to resist the urge to try to justify a REALLY nice PRS Mira in a local shop about a week ago though...
It's funny, but the local "big" shop down here is still a mom&pop business, but it's close to the size of a GC, with way better variety and actual practice rooms for gear. Plus, you don't get strip-searched walking through the door.
So on the original question, other than 2 custom orders (both phone/online), everything since the one in '95 has been ebay/craigslist/friend-of-a-friend/guitar forums. |

Had no intention of buying anything until I picked up a Norman 6 string in a store and liked it so much that I didn't want to put it down in case someone else bought it.
I'm not sure about buying sight unseen. Any time I've been looking for guitars I've gone through quite a few before finding the one I liked.
Tried about 15 LPs once before finding the one - and of course it had to be a plug ugly sunburst but what can you do..lol |

CanterburyStrings, I hear you.. I love having the mom and pop store to go browse, get strings etc.. But i'm in the business of keeping my family supported, not keeping local stores in business when their price is 20-100% more than I can get online. Sure, if its a few bucks, even a hundred bucks, I'll buy from the local store. But i'm afraid the era of big business is in, and the small buying power of local stores is out.. There is no way for you to compete, and its sad, but its the world we live in now. You can't expect people to hand over hundreds of extra dollars to you because they like you.. I like my friends, but I"m not about to go around giving them money! I also think its a matter of just not having a decent selection. Most local stores I go into have so many low end guitars, and nothing high end.. Understandably, they can't afford to keep that kind of inventory around.. But i'm so not going to have them special order me a guitar at MSRP, as someone else pointed out! If it turns out that I'll have to start ordering my strings online, its just going to have to be that way. If I bought me last 3 guitars at MSRP, i'd be out about $4000.. Thats ALOT of freaking strings.. I wish you the best of luck, in all honesty. I think for mom and pop stores to survive, its going to be about being creative in ways that they don't have to worry about competing with the big guys.. Unfortunatly, I have no idea what that is! |

I have had everything in here from 4000 dollar Gibsons to low priced Yamahas. (I even had a Taylor on consignment once, but it didn't sell, so after a while the guy took it back.)But what keeps people coming in I believe, is that I'm FRIENDLY. I let people play the guitars without standing over them. I give good service. If you buy strings from me, I will put them on for free. If the neck needs to be tweaked, I'll do that while I'm at it, and don't charge for that either. I WANT people's guitars to be as playable as possible. Just the other day a guy came in and bought a cheap Yamaha to send to his son. I keep extra boxes on hand, so I packed it for him at no extra charge. I wanted to make sure it got there in one piece, and because I went the extra mile, I know that guy will be back. And the coffee pot is always on. I even had a guy say one time that it feels like going to a friends house. I try to make everyone feel welcome, and so far, business has been good. |

Everything else was eBay, except the 06C, which I got from an on-line store. The last two were the Martin and the Larrivee. When I bought the Martin, I got it and the Bose PAS Model 1 at the same time. I refer to that setup as heroin and the syringe. I fell in love with the Larrivee while killing some time at Strait Music. Went back a couple of days later and found out it was a special order that was never picked up. Got a killer deal on it.
I love going into these places and playing guitars. I love hanging out and jamming with some of the local musicians who show up from time to time. I figure if I want to keep doing that I better spend some of my money there. |

It's not that I don't support the local store, I've got a bunch of stuff in there for sale on consignment and it moves through at a reasonable pace. If there was something in there that I wanted I'd buy it. But most things I want I already have or they have a way of finding me, like the D18s and the Collings.
As I've said here before, ny focus has shifted from getting to using. It's easy to get great guitars, much harder to play them great.
I guess I almost bought a 56 D28 from Mike's store here on the island. It walked in the door and in order to keep it from walking back out again it was purchased. It was my money but Mike took first refusal and quickly decided he should keep it, (smart move!) So he has it now. It's got a skinny neck anyway. Some of you have seen it, it's sweet. |

Before that it was the Alvarez-Yairi 12 string bought in 1977. I really wanted the Ovation 12 string they were selling at Rondo on rt 22 in Springfield NJ, but I couldn't quite afford it, so I went down the road and found the A-Y for about $50 less. Music Town was the name of the store I think. Now that store is an adult DVD store, and Rondo is closed.
I try really hard to buy local. For cables, strings, picks, and other stuff it isn't a big difference in price $ even if the % difference is large. Paying an extra $1 for strings from old Ray is worth it to me to keep the money local and to build a personal relationship. We bought the Crate acoustic amp from him even though his price was $30 higher than internet.c
I'd be thrilled to buy an Adamas from a local retailer, but they just don't carry them. |

| I stay out of music stores. I buy strings on line to avoid impulse purchases and do on line research before buying an instrument or serious gear, which I will then buy on line.
In the olden days you had to go to the music store to learn about new gear, let alone purchase it. Now why bother? Since you can do all that on line without any thirteen year olds pushing Strats through Marshalls set on 11. |

Wise words from a wise man.
Back in 1976 the only way to buy a guitar was from a music store. I bought my first real guitar from a store after shopping around for the best price. It was a Guild G37. That was my only guitar for 26 years. I literally wore it out. when I was done with it, a neck re-set and fret job were needed. Sold it on eBay w/o regrets.
Thereafter, I've bought and sold a load of guitars on eBay. A couple of years ago though I bought a Schecter electric from the local Guitar Center at their Labor Day event. |

So, my answer is last Year (2008) AND the year before.
There are occasionally REAL finds in the brick and mortar world. For example, Daddy's now has a PRS (again, apologies for the non-O mention) electric that is just sweeter than sweet. Priced reasonably...no shame in buying that one. I have seen Ovations Collection's Editions and others... Some SWEEEEEEEET guitars. But definitely a one-in-a-thousand type of thing... Bottom line, most purchases are on-line or e-Bay. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I'm back! I didn't quite make it out of the store with a guitar. Put the DuoTone on layaway until we get word on how badly we'll be hit for taxes this year. Probably not so bad that I won't get it, but I might be looking for a buyer if the accountant gives us bad news. If that's the case, the Professor gets first dibbs.
"OK, I'm going to get some gas, wash the car and buy a guitar." Her hearing loss suddenly improves and she gives me the look and said I better wait to see if we'll have anything left after taxes. So if Uncle Sam doesn't get it all, GC will get the rest and I'll have a US made DuoTone. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | This was a used one that was in there for a long time. I mentioned it on this board and Prof was interested, but then it sold for $999. The guy that bought it traded it back on something else and the manager didn't want it hanging around forever like last time, so he sold it to me for his cost. It's got some pick scratches, belt buckle rash and a couple small dings, but the fretboard looks almost new.
I think the only other Hamers they have are the Asian ones or the Slammers. There are a couple of factory tours on Youtube or AOL video. Jol does a nice job of explaining their craft. |

Location: New York | My girlfriend turned wife bought my first Celeb at a music store.
I bought my Celeb Deluxe at a music store, same company, different outlet.
I bought my Kramer at a flea market.
I traded a BB Gun for my Washburn Falcon at an auction house. Best deal of my life.
I bought the Fender accoustic/electric from a flea market.
Elite Special on Ebay
Fender Squire in a music store
and I am buying the C778 LX from Daddy's this week.
So I guess that I am all over the place. No particular favorite, when a good deal presents itself and I am in the market, I jump.

Location: CA | Last month. A very pretty Ibanez Artstar AS-80 that was a trade-in at GC. Came with a hard case, hang tags and other case candy. Guitar itself is a pretty orangy-blonde and appears absolutely unused. Not a fingerprint on it. It's probably 10ish years old.
It had been hanging in there for almost a year at $479, but was clearanced for $300 last month at one of their sales. An offer I couldn't refuse. Maybe that sounds like lot for a Korean made guit, but this thing is beautifully made, sounds great to me, has a very nice neck, and gets pretty favorable reviews at the usual places. Plus I've been in this Brian Setzer kick for awhile now and can't afford a Gibbie 335 or Gretsch Longhorn. LOL
So there you have it. The sordid truth is out. But if it makes anyone feel any better, the last guitar I bought at a music store before last month was my brand new - and very first - Ovation, a 1111-4, back in 1971. | |
