Well, he finally got into the rock hall of fame, but as usual, he didn't get the recognition he deserves. The AP article only mentioned his name, while Metallica (deservedly IMO) got a write up, and Run DMC (undeservedly IMO) got an even bigger write up. I guess you could say Jeff is a guitarist's guitarist. We are the only ones who seem to value him.

Jeff Beck is one of my all time favorite electric guitarists. He is a truly unique player who continues to innovate. He can say volumes with one note. And nobody works a whammy bar like Jeff!

He has style has always been a little left of center compared to Clapton, Page, Blackmore and others who always got more recognition, but I have always loved listening to him and watching him play.

I've always been amazed at the sounds he can pull out of a guitar, and watching him do it is even more amazing. Agreed he's never gotten the recognition he deserves. Too innovative, I guess.

So RunDMC is now in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.... right.
To put that in perspective, imagine putting Metallica in the Rap Hall Of Fame.

"Rap Hall Of Fame"... now that's a funny thought.

Understand that the corporate definition of Rock-n-Roll and your definition may differ... Greatly!

But Thanx for the reminder... I think that I will listen to some Jeff Beck now.

Crap hall of Shame. That shit ain't music, it's -5 street poetry where every other word has to be fuck or shit. There is no rhyme, just F&S every other word. Requires no talent, just a fuckin Presidential "the world owes me" attitude, you mo-fo ho!

The two Beck albums I like the best are with Tench as the singer. One has an Orange on the cover and the other one is the one just before it or after it, same line up. Max Middleton on Fender Rhodes, Cozy Powell on drums I think. Great stuff. I think these came a year or so after Truth.

Just another reason NOT to be concerned about the R&R HoF.
Their credibility was pretty low with me to begin with.

Jeff Beck is an artist who transcends his own medium. He can reach the 'I don't know art, but I know what I like....and I don't hate that' crowd.

On Blow By Blow he took R&R as far into jazz as it will ever reach. 'Cos We've Ended As Lovers' is one of the most beautiful instrumentals of all time, along with Samba Pa Ti and Sleepwalk.

Jeff & Tal's version of 'Cos We've Ended As Lovers' from that same '07 Crossroads is simply amazing. If you haven't seen it, check it out…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIFFRHBCPzA&feature=related

Jeff Beck is a true guitar master, most would agree. But when I first saw/heard that Crossroads performance, I was stunned by the incredibly mature and complex Bass lines that were being played by what appeared to be a petite teenaged girl. I thought maybe she was Beck's daughter…

I have since learned that she is a little beyond "teenage" but that she is an emerging talent on the bass who is highly respected by the likes of Jeff Back, who's probably 3 times her age.

No bass player jokes please, she is truly a talented musician…

There is no other guitarist in the world like Jeff Beck. He operates in a league of one. Staggeringly original.

And I never thought I'd write this sentence but if I was forced at gunpoint to listen to either DMC or Metallica it would be DMC by a mile. (I might actually choose the bullet of course.)

The R&R Hall of Fame is a joke.
It's usually based on Hype&Spin as opposed to Talent&Ability (much like our elections).

After being stuck with a Factory2nd for so long, I'll gladly take the -5 (as long as it works).

They recently opened a Hall of Fame Annex in NYC.

On display, they've got a urinal from CBGB's (which is pretty much redundant).

Yeah, the hall of is a worthless bunch of hype. But it's at least nice when people I like are inducted.

Back to JB..

This is one of my favorites:

Somewhere over the rainbow

Beck is a complete electric guitarist, he refuses to play acoustic guitar. Maybe, cause there' no whammy bar.

Beck is an extraordinary talent to be sure and is a curiosity to me for that reason but, ultimately he doesn't resonate with my fundamental frequency.

. . . "After being stuck with a Factory2nd for so long". . .

Factory 2nd? Jeepers, Cliff you're in a generous mood today.

What Beal said about rap X2. I think it's sad and somehow frightening that something which takes no talent, no musical ability, is not music and is basically profanity poetry (and not very good poetry) can sell so well and make talent-less jerks so friggin much money.

Not only does the emperor have no clothes, he ain't even the emperor.

It's hard t'find (at least it used t'be), but if you can locate a copy of "The Secret Policeman's (other)Ball", Beck & Clapton do a brilliant live duo on "Since We've Ended as Lover's" followed up by "Further On Up the Road" . . .

Rap may well not be music. My grandfather made a good case for the same argument against Big Band... "All that Boom Boom Boom on the drums, rythme and harmony with no interest in melody....is THAT music? I think not."

For me, though I don't 'get it', (with certain very specific exceptions) it fulfills the first law of Rock & Roll. Piss off your parents!
...........................................

Oh, and to get back on guitars.... though I have endless respect for Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck is GOD!

They are not succeeding if we like it, that's the first rule.
It's is still spoo.
I'm not sure the big band stuff had the same -5 attitude or the then equlivent. Of course, life didn't back then either........

Sorry, I may have been confused (yet again)
I thought -5 referred to an Ovation colour....?
;-)

No, my grandfather really meant what he said.
He also almost broke his foot trying to kick in his own television when the Beatles first played the Sullivan show. Then he turned it off and left the room swearing.

My Mom turned the set back on.

I was just watching Monty Python and there was an ad for "The Secret Policeman's Balls" DVD set. It contains a few of the shows - I don't know if they are in their entirety, but worth checking out. Available at Barnes and Noble (and probably other places).

Well as a resident preacher on the board, at least its nice to see everyone coming together on something everyone obviously feels strongly about....Jeff Beck I mean...
I have enjoyed him as much as anyone from back in the day...he's a bit different...but he can play the frets off of the strat...The crossroads '07 set was fabulous! I wish they would release the rest of the music that was played that day by some of the greats...
I have to say for the most part you have all hit the perverbial "Nail on the Head"...

On display, they've got a urinal from CBGB's (which is pretty much redundant).
Cliff especially...... ;)

Yep, "A Guitarists Guitarist" Makes me glad I play. It is more fun watching him play too. I am at a level that even if I can't play the leads I at least can understand how they are doing it, Jeff does shit I just can't quite figure. He controls the whole guitar like it's part of him.

I have similiar situation with YES. Amazing musicians, amazing body of work and some of the most complicated yet listener friendly pieces I have ever heard. Yet they get dissed all the time with awards or in rock history documentary's. I would not be surprised to find that they are not in the hall of fame.
