Here's some info/photo on the 2009 Collector that Al announced. Looks like a custom legend contour cutaway with koa top, skinny neck, abalone/tortie trim and a modified op-pro. $3599.

2009 COLLECTOR

That's a lot of money for a an Ovation.

Whoa! Love the look!!
Just wish I could afford something like that.
Allways was curious about a Koa top. Like the Celtic fret markers/rossette.

For those how do go for it, ENJOY!!!

There was a matching 12 string in the For Sale section not long ago.

If only they had stuck with epaulets :(

Still it has the OP Pro Studio preamp, why oh why didn't they put one in the 1680!!??!?!?!!

That reminds me I must buy one (an Op Pro studio that is).

Is it just my aging eyes or is that a 3 piece neck?
Anybody know what the shape/finish of the neck is?

Nice. I'm not a big fan of KOA but with the Celtic Rosette it has that "understated elegance" look like the FD-14.

I want to see more and better pics!
One pic that shows 40% of the guitar and 3 thumbnails is not enough.

Thanks for the pic, Dave.

And just a thought... IMO, In most situations bridge pick-ups look better black than white.

Well, just in case you're $3K short and can live without abalone, here's the EXACT same guitar. Well almost. ;) Ovation KOA Guitar

Can't wait until the knuckleheads at GC start to tell this story ...

I do like the looks of the guitar. It's just that in that price range you start to think of other possibilities.

Interesting that Takamine just came out with two very limited run models also KOA topped, even more expensive than this Ovation.

Is there something about Koa that we don't know about?

I like the looks. The abalone with tortoise shell binding is a nice touch. But doesn't Al still have a 14 fret LAV Koa left? It's similar, much more collectible, and much cheaper. Take the LAV Koa, move the soundhole back to the middle, put some abalone around the edges and you have the 2009.

Beautiful and overpriced, like all Collectors.

I find it an unfortunate trend that Ovation seems intent on put Contour bodies on their Collectors series, at least judging from the last 4-5 year's worth. There are those of us out here who don't care for these bodies. I think the most beautiful guitar Ovation has made to date is the '04 Collectors. And there have been examples in offered for very good prices last year. But I see no reason to own one because of the contour. Yeah, my own little 'thing', I know. But here's my vote/plea to Ovation to put the 2010 model on a mid-depth body.

I assumed the contour bowls were what they thought were the wave of the future. That would be a good reason to put it on the 05 Collector's, but not necessarily on every one since. Do they still come with certificates certifying that this particular combination of materials and design won't be used again?
The 04 was a different animal. It wasn't meant to be innovative, it was meant to be a Commemorative, rather than a Collector. Those of us that are old school may agree it was the most beautiful, but other than the bearclaw spruce and the preamp, it was more like a reissue than a Collector.

The 04 Collector was a single epaulet Elite style. One proto was made and that's it. No collector. The Custom Legend Reissue came out and we more of less call it the "04 Collector" but there is nothing innovative about it, it's as MIB said a commemorative reissue guitar, and a darn nice one at that.

The 09 Collector is innovative in many ways, KOA, soundhole trim abalone/tortie, enhanced pre-amp. It's just damn freaking expensive. Wait until next year and you can probably get an FRG for $1000. Luckily they are only making 150 of them but I'm not sure there's 150 people that can tell it from the $500. celebrity model.

are 1943 ford cars and 2004 ovation collector guitars related? what i mean is, did they even make an '04 collector's? anyone got a photo of one? if there is such a thing, why is there none on the ovation website? or is that why the '04 is the best looking one? ;)

edit: i found a photo on dave's ovation gallery site.

The BFLG member lifts his head from grazing and looks at the pretty guitar.

Is $3599 the suggested retail or the street price?

If it's the street price I think I'll wait until someone sits on one to buy one. :D

I'm sorry. I meant the '05 collectors as my vote for 'most beautiful'. The one with the simple clear spruce top and lovely abalone soundhole ring. Not sure where I got the '04' from. Must be the alzheimers kicking in again.

...I know it's not as beautiful, but all the sound AND $650.

Its a looker for sure but i can`t make myself spend close to that kind of money when you can find a D18, D28 or a J45 for $1300.00 or less in mint shape. Too many deals out there now to be buying new. What the crap am i saying i`ve got a brand new guitar coming in tomorrow....

Ok, so am I the only one who thinks it's about time that there were real pricetags on Ovations?

Granted it's going to mean that it's less than likely that I will own a new Ovation, but it sure it nice to see a decent guitar at a decent price.

And just so you know exactly where I'm coming from... take note of the specific words the Guitar stores you when they describe that room with the Martins and Taylors and such in it. "That's the room with the EXPENSIVE guitars". They don't say that's the room with the better sounding or better or anything like that. "The more expensive". That's likely the reason Ovations are out on the shelves in most stores that have those rooms and not IN those rooms.

I'm glad to see Ovation starting to price their guitars to what they are worth. For anyone who has been to the factory and seen the process, care and effort put into the USA Made line, can you honestly say any of those guitars are really worth LESS than 3K ??? When I got my OFC guitar, as much as it was, I still feel it was a bargain.

I agree, though quite honestly the look of this one does absolutely nothing for me. The '08 would be something I'd put the money into if I had it in hand, but this one's not my cup of tea.

I love the koa and the Celtic motif, but there's just too much solid black against that nice wood grain. Too dark and harsh for me.

Howdy,

Just got #10 or 150...very nice, pretty koa, great sound, just the right amount of bling for me.
Contour back and op Studio hit the spot.

Got my Al Dimeola signed truss rod cover on top.
