Location: Austin, Texas | I received a new Ovation a couple of weeks ago and I'm trying to find some info on it. I know it is a CS257 but that's pretty much it. I would like to know wood composition/possible dating/anything related to this guitar would be awesome. I have found things that I think might be right but I would like some confirmation on my findings. I am also having a hard time trying to find out what kind of finish I have. It is a very nice green but has a subtle sunburst that, instead of being black, its blue around the edges.
Any and all info would be much appreciated! Here's a link of the guitar - http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p558/Gsalazar26/DayIgotJewelMar...
and the logo -

P.S. It probably wouldn't help seeing as its an offshore Ovation, but the serial # is 9016909 and my label is blue and green in color
Thanks in advance.

Location: Zion, Illinois | George, I tried a Google search and found references that the tops on a CS257 are either Spruce or Maple. If Ovation follows the wood naming practice I've seen other guitar makers use - just saying spruce or maple implies it is a laminate. Maybe someone else can give you more information.
BTW - here is a Youtube video of one being played. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahs041LSsF8 .

Location: Mexico City | Hi George,
This is a Celebrity Deluxe CS257 with OP30 preamp. When I saw your picture, I immediately remembered a youtube video of a girl playing this guitar unplugged, a pleasant, very balanced sound.
OVATION CS257 CELEBRITY DELUXE
-Super shallow cutaway -Flame green burst finish -Vintage sunburst style finish -Flamed maple `Adamas' style top -20 fret rosewood board -Under saddle pickup with OP30 preamp/electronics -Multi sound hole design -2 piece nato neck -Gold hardware.
I finded your exact model here on Elderly, so take a look to the info:

Also take a look to the info on Ovation oficial website.
My guessing, is FGB means Flame Green Burst

Welcome to the family,

Location: Zion, Illinois | Leo, that doesn't look like flamed maple to me. Here's a link to some pictures of a FGB CS257 : http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/CS257-FGB.htm . |

| I questioned the details about the 257 I bought at the pawn shop... no answers...
But even as an offshore laminate top workhorse - I really like the tone and playabiliy...
I have electric #9 for strings...

Location: Mexico City | Hi Bradley,
You´re absolutely right, I notice in the Elderlys a veta on the wood top that isn´t in George´s guitar,
So I conclude the top is spruce, and the other info is right.
Thanks,
Leo

Location: Mexico City | Hi Carl,
This is the info on Ovation website:
http://www.ovationguitars.com/archive/guitar/cs257%20
Color:Cherry Cherryburst Quilt Top:Figured Maple Bracing:QuintadScale Length:25 1/4" Fretboard:Rosewood Fret Inlay:Dots and Diamonds Bridge:Walnut Rosette:Multi Soundhole 5-Piece Epaulet Pickup:Thinline Under-Saddle Nutwidth:1 11/16" Machines:Gold Preamp: OP 30
According to Elderly, the neck is Nato. I finded your model in Elderly, except the preamp is an OP 24c+ not an op30 like your guitar:
 Hope that helps,
Leo

Location: Austin, Texas | Hi everybody!
Thanks a lot for all the help that has been provided.
Just to add some other things that I found out:
I have an OP 24+ and Quintad bracing.
Someone told me that the tuners might be 24k gold! I highly doubt this as I'm pretty sure its plated, but just to double check this isn't true right??
The main thing (other than the date) that I'm extremely curious about is the finish. Leo, I've looked at the FGB color before and the outer color is black, mine is a blue-ish color fading into the green. Plus the FGB color that I have seen is really only found on the quilted maple tops. I wish mine was quilted, but the laminate tops works great for my ear. I have looked at some old catalogs looking at every CS257 from French to Japanese catalogs and based on the pre-amp I have, I'm fairly sure my 257 is pre-2000.
Also, I have seen mixed listings of the nato neck and a mahogany neck with a walnut headstock. The latter are the guitars pre-2000. Anything after had the nato necks. I'm not entirely sure, but I saw these on some catalogs.

Location: Austin, Texas | Forgot one thing that I haven't mentioned:
I have fallen in love with Ovations, so when I got the chance for a free one, I jumped at the chance! This guitar is my second (I bought my first december of '10) and the reason that it was free was because the original owner had an "accident" and the neck broke. They tried repairing it and they ruined it even more! I convinced the owner that a lot of work would have to be put into repairing the guitar (I have been an active guitar technician for the past 6 years, check out my website if you are in the Austin area! http://www.gandbguitars.com/). The guy decided to literally THROW THE GUITAR IN THE TRASH. This sent shivers down my spine... I offered to buy it, but he just gave it to me for free.
So.. I got the neck off, very small wood damage, got the clamps I need to compensate for the bowl. Now I'm just waiting when I got time away from my clients and a good day. Any and all tips would be appreciated! Maybe I'll post some pics of the work soon.

Location: Mexico City | Hi George,
The tunners are 24k gold plated. It´s neither the same as 24k gold, nor like cheap 14k gold plated. |
