Location: Raleigh, NC | Does anyone have knowlege or experience regarding sending back an amazing old Ovation for a new top job, and a once over? The neck is ok. Thinking how sweet a Cedar, Mahogany, or original Sitka Spruce replacement would be on an old Foil Label Piece of Art. I suppose this makes sense if it doesn't get too crazy. It plays great - but looks bad with repaired cracks and dings. Another thought would be to just have it refinished by someone out there that specializes in guitars, in a "Sunburst" without ruining the tone. Not worried about resale or collectors value - just enjoyment and playin it. This option may be cheaper and look great. The wood is pushing 40 after all and ought to be worth keeping perhaps. I reckon someone has been there and done it. I am a newbie to this Club, but not Ovations. Thanks! |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Unless it has serious structural issues, I would NOT replace the top !!! You'll wait another 40 years for it to sound as good again. |

Location: Utah | As I understand it, the factory will replace the bowl and top as a unit. They don't just replace the wood top on the old bowl. Unless there is a big structural issue I wouldn't do anything to it, but if you really want a refinish I would send it to the factory for that. |

Location: Raleigh, NC | Thanks FlySig and StandingOvation. I'm pushing 60 and in 40 years....... A refinish may be the most sensible thing. No structural issues. Anyone know what a refinish runs? Could maybe use a fret job too - not sure but while she's there......... |

Location: Utah | I don't know what it will cost, but I do know that everyone who posts here that they sent it to the Mothership says they got far more than their money's worth. I would not trust a refinish to anyone but Mother. A refret I would only trust to the best local luthier or Mother. |

Location: Right now? | I had my sunburst 1537 refinished because the epaulet was damaged (look closely) and she deserves to be gorgeous! The gang at Ovation are FAB (thanks to JB & KK especially!) The cost is worth it! I tried to post a photo, but for whatever reason, can't ... hmmm ... I KNOW how to post a photo over here, so not sure what's up with that or what I'm doing wrong.
