Location: Massachusetts | Before you get soured on coated strings, try a set of Elixir nanowebs. I've been using them for several years now and like them as well uncoated D'Addarios and they last for about five times longer. Taylor puts them on their guitars at the factory. |

Location: Utah | Elixirs sounded ok on my 2007 BCS (Ovation wood topped guitar), and I liked the slippery feel and no finger noise. But they do lack a little bit of life in the sound compared to non-coated strings. I read somewhere that Kaki King uses Elixir lights with a medium high E string. Of the coated strings I've tried, the Elixir was the best for tone.
On my Adamas 2080 I have rediscovered D'Addario EJ-16. Phos-Bronze light gauge. They're on it right now and they sound great. My daughter and I both really like Martin Marquis SP Phos-Bnz lights on our Adamases. Be sure to get the SP version, they seem to last a lot longer than the plain Marquis. Recently I had on Helix medium gauge strings and liked the tone and the lower amount of finger noise. Dean Markely has several different versions of phos-bronze strings which sounded very good on my 2080.
Medium gauge 13's definitely give more punch and volume than 12's. I am not sure that they make a big difference but I haven't done a lot of comparison on the Adamas. I haven't tried 11's but I would expect them to sound a bit thinner in tone and volume. Maybe more fret buzz if you strum hard. |

Location: NJ | I own Adamas #54, which (like #47) is strictly "acoustic" and has no preamp to tailor/colour it's output.
For more years than I can remember, I've strictly used D'Addario EJ16 (12's) PhosphorBronze on it. Occasionally, I'll switch-up to EJ17 (13's) if I want a bit more thump in th'BottomEnd, or for aggressive FingerPicking, but th'Guitar genuinely "s-s-s-sings" w/EJ16's on it.
Coated strings have a tendency to attenuate certain harmonics - harmonics that the Adamas's top was painstakingly DESIGNED and BUILT to reproduce. I'd much prefer to be firing on all cylinders than to get my panties in a bunch about how often I have to change the oil.
CoatedStrings sound like **** . . . that's why they use 'em on Taylor's . . . nuthin' t'Lose.
11's (on an All-Acoustic Guitar) is for Pussies.

Location: SoCal | I've got the coated strings on my OFC slothead and on my A braced Legend and they sound bright as hell. Try light gauge Elixir phospher bronze. They sound great on both Adamas and roundhole Ovations. Just try them. I'd be interested in the feedback........ |

Location: Massachusetts | Slothead, for your own piece of mind give coated and non-coated strings a shot and YOU decide what's best for your ear. We all have our opinion as to what sounds good and what sounds like crap.. I don't think that any of these strings will sound bad on your guitar.
I'm still curious why some people here don't like Taylors. I've had my 710ce for over ten years now, and it feels and sounds great.

I'm still curious why some people here don't like Taylors. Why do Red Sox fans hate the Yankees?
As opposed any other team?
Same thing.
I kinda pissed at Fender, too

slothead, Ovation used to have their own brand of string, at least they were in an Ovation package. I'm sure as you keep experimenting with different brands and types of strings you will find the strings that sound and feel the best on your guitar. I've been told that there aren't too many string manufacturers in existence. I guess your question will be answered by trying them all. As for going on forums, you'll get as many different answers as there are brands. Good luck, have fun and let us know what you end up with.

Funny but I almost mentioned those as the strings I did NOT like on my Adamas.
Part of the fun of being a guitar gear geek is trying different strings. I keep the front cover of the package and write notes on the back side. Not included in this list are the Martin Marquis SP phosphor bronze lights, which are the standard reference for me. They are much like the EJ16 in tone. So here's what I've got on the 2080:
Sunbeam : Nice sound, lower tension, short life.
Everly Music "Acoustic Sessions": Very Nice sound, strings feel stiff
DR Rare: Mellow tone, low tension = fret buzz, short life, NO
John Pearse Acoustic set #600L Phos-Bnz lights: Sound Great. Crisp, balanced, rich.
Dean Markley ML-2004A med/light Vintage Bronze Acoustic: A little brighter than Phos Bnz, not as complex. Medium life, lose tone sooner, a bit of a wolf tone on B string
Roto Sound Jumbo King JK12 med/light Phos Bnz: Nice sound, stiffer than EJ16s
Dean Markley Blue Steel med/light #2036: Nice tone, a bit mellow, good life
Dean Markley PhosBronze Acoustic mediums, TMD-2067A: Best yet tone, reasonable tension
Dean Markley PhosBronze Acoustic med/light, TMD-2066A: Sound GREAT
Dean Markley Helix CL 80/20 2082: First impression "This is the tone!". Second impression "A bit brassy"
D'Addario EJ16: OK, crisp. Less bass than mediums.

If I was playing professionally and regularly, I'd be using EJ16s and change them before every gig.
But I'm not, so I use Elixers. |

Location: Chicago | I guess I'm the heretic here. With very acidic sweat, I have relied on Elixir Nanoweb 12s (I actually use a 13 on top). My Adamas 1581 sounds great with them, no harmonics or intonation problems at all (aside from me tuning poorly). If you want a sound check go to my signature links and give a listen to "Black Adamas" "Spoonman Strut" "Friendly Fire" "No Mystery" etc. I love the Elixirs and look forward to putting them on the 47 RI prototype that I recently bought from Al on Lost Vintage. |

Here's the irony: Al kindly sent it to Palo Alto CA where I was to begin my vacation. Well, I ended up in the hospital last week. Vacation kaput. Now my brother has to ship from CA to Chicago. Sigh...... |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I agree with Cliff (good to hear from him) and Bobbo. I use EJ16s and 1818s on all but two of my A/E guitars (those have mediums). I can't bend the .032 D string as much as I'd like sometimes (the .030 D string from a 10-47 set is noticeably easier), but that's a small trade-off for the richer tone. And unlike some other members, I only play plugged in. |

Location: Right now? | Geez, Dobro. I hope you are OK! At least you will have a beautiful instrument to play while you recover and contribute to your full recovery. Do I need to send you a ukulele? The very last Adamas I'm going to buy when I can, is a black 1687. Yeah, baby. I'm selling and a trading. I hope someone will buy my MERB 1598 12 string and a few other non O's, like my travel guitars and a few Masterbilts. It's stunning and the best 12 string guitar I ever ran into (which is why I bought it) but I never play it, because I'm trying to properly learn some jazz guitars on the guitars I already have.
