Location: Norton VA | This a a nice old Model 1612-1, s/n 102975. It has a few superficial finish cracks and a nick or two, but looks pretty darn good for a 35 year old guitar. It plays very nice with a great sound plugged or unplugged. It has nice low action and very little fretwear. Comes with original case. Price is $400.00 plus actual shipping costs.

Location: Texas | FYI; I believe that a 1612 would actually be called a "Custom Balladeer" not a "Deluxe Balladeer."

The Deluxe Balladeer was built in the 1960's and became the Legend in the early 70's. Wonder thru the webpage I referenced. You'll have a good time and learn a lot. A margarita and nachos enhance the experience..... |

I believe that "Crack the Code" is misleading in this case.
The fourth digit #2 only indicated a "Deluxe Balladeer" for guitars produced before November 1968, Ovation acoustic guitars with a fourth digit of #2 made after that time were called "Custom Balladeers." At that same time Deluxe Balladeers were renumbered as 1117's and the "7" models were eventually renamed "Legend" (in June of 1972.)
Furthermore, yours is an A/E Shallow Bowl, and I don't believe Ovation ever made an A/E Deluxe Balladeer, nor a Shallow Bowl Deluxe Balladeer.
If it is a model #1612 that was made in 1977 (which your serial number would indicate is correct) I stand by my assertion that it is a Custom Balladeer.

I just threw that in so you'd stop agreeing with me Moody, it seemed so unnatural…

But, you're correct, the third "1" in the number should indicate a deep bowl. (It's hard to tell from the photos above, so I took the decoder's word for it without thinking about it.)

That is how you know that it is a Hand-Laid bowl.

Location: Pueblo West, CO | Technically, there are two generations of hand-laid bowls.
The first was hand-laid and vacuum-bagged over a male mold. The second was just a hand lay-up inside a female mold.
The first one shows no cloth weave inside and the second shows cloth weave inside, like what can be seen in Papap's guitar.
Ovation switched from the first generation to the second in 1968 and stayed with it until about 1981. After that, all Ovation bowls were SMC. (Sheet Molding Compound) Ovation used SMC bowls for Applause guitars starting in 1974.
The current hand-laid bowls available from the factory for the vintage Lyrachord line of guitars and customs are vacuum-bagged over a male mold like the originals.
