Location: Boise, Idaho | I looked at a few old threads on our music rooms/man caves or whatever, but didn't find anything specific to my question. We are about to move and I will close the man cave in the basement and move my guitars and amps into a bonus room above the garage in the new (to us) house. It's plenty large, so I'm thinking about hanging all the guitars on one wall. Since the ceiling is a bit higher than the one I had in the basement, I'm thinking about hanging them in two layers, but I know there won't be enough room to hang one right below the other. For those of you, like Damon, that have hangers above and below, what do you find is the ideal spacing between the top row of hangers, allowing for the bottom row to have space for the head and neck of the bottom row? I plan on putting up two rows of boards to screw the hangers into, so I won't have to put the hangers into the studs spaced 16 inches apart.
Obviously, I can figure this out for myself, but copying you guys is easier and you might post some pictures. Also, if I can get all the guitars on one wall with room left over, I can add more hangers for more guitars. I am also considering a stand to go on the floor, possibly just for 4 or 5 electrics, but I may need the floor space for amps. I'm still struggling with where to put all the cases, too. I'm already missing my basement with the store room next to the guitar room. |

Location: Jet City | The pic is distorted a bit because it's one of those panorama things and the top row is sorta cut off, but here...
For the side walls of my little guitar cubby: On center, my String Swing hangers are 22.5" apart. The top row hangers are 75" from the floor (centered at the yoke that holds the headstock/neck). The bottom row is at 56" from the floor. There's enough room for a 2x12 combo amp underneath a guitar hanging on the bottom row. I have a Carvin Belair and a Vox 2X12 and a few others under mine. The back row is a bit different because I have the Flying V on a horizontal mount.

Location: Boise, Idaho | Thanks, guys. I have 4 or 5 of the angled Hercules hangers that I'll use starting from a corner and maybe leave space for another one or two. I may be able to go a little higher than 75 inches for the top row. The ceiling is gabled just a little bit, so I can't go very close to the ceiling. I like Damon's color scheme, but we just had the whole house repainted all the same color. I should have had them paint one wall red. Maybe someday. There will be an entertainment center in the middle and I may run the boards for the guitar hangers behind that, so they will be there if we move the entertainment center. I'll take pictures when I'm done. Then I start on the 4 car garage. Those are my two rooms in this house. |

Mark, you've been bamboozled. You actually have NO rooms IN the house. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I saw a cartoon recently, that said basically, "If the man gets a man cave, what does the woman get?" "The rest of the house." We're actually downsizing from a house with a big yard, pool, 5-car garage and partial basement. The garage and basement are mine and I can't believe some smart guy hasn't bought the house just for those assets. The newer house still has a pretty big garage, over 1100 square feet, and the bonus room is pretty big and it's the only room on the second floor. It also has a bathroom and small closet. I like the separation of "my" space from "her" space. I've been married for 37 years, so I've been bamboozled a lot and I just try to make the most of it. |

In my 36 years of marriage, 20-some different houses, "my" room always seems to be the room that they didn't include when they built the house...

Now for the cases: Dress up, go out for a drink and run into someone. A women, for example. Ask if she has a dry cellar (you see, we're heading somewhere else as you thought in the first place). If so, buy her some drinks. Then ask her if she could store some guitar cases for you.
That's what I did, and it worked. My 25-30 guitar cases now live at my ladyfriend's house in a humidity controlled cellar. Because she got anxious it could get moist or wet.
Good luck, have fun,

Kurt, I'm glad your plan worked for you, but I've found that lady friends are really expensive and cellars here are rare. I've got a perfectly good one now (cellar), but it's for sale and as a friend says, "downsizing means I have to get rid of all my s**t." If I run out of room, I can store the cases in the garage and there's a bunch of wasted attic space on both sides my room. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Mark, I just started hanging them where I could find room between the neon signs and other vintage guitar paraphernalia. Once all four walls were totally covered, I hung them from the ceiling using hangers of my own making. They have to be very rugged to endure the occasional bonk when the entire band shows up for practice. My preference is to hang them on an angle, almost as in a natural playing position. |

Location: Texas | I have limited room/wall-space in my cave, but I really wanted to keep as many guitars out and handy as possible, so I went with a different approach (photo below.) It works well for me, the hangers are highly-adjustable for spacing, angle, distance from the wall etc. (they come in different lengths also.)
One potential downside; if you put the guitars too close together, you have to take a little more care not to bang them together when taking them down/putting them up.
I've had this setup for several years and have been very happy with it:

Location: Boise, Idaho | The carpet was finally done this weekend and we started moving in. I took about a dozen guitars over and put them in closets for now. Then we moved in an entertainment center and set it up. That took all of Saturday. I have 11 feet left on one side of the entertainment center and 4 feet on the other, so I bought enough boards to put two rows on the 11 foot side and one on the 4 foot side. They will be painted to match the wall, mostly because we have paint left over. I'll put the angled Hercules hangers on the short side and the Swing Strings on the other side. I might even have some space left so I can try to convince SWMBO that I need a couple more guitars to fill in the space, although I haven't quite calculated this out yet. I'll do it as I go, with the top board first and see how the guitars fit before I put up the lower board.
She doesn't like guitars sitting on stands because they are too hard to vacuum around. I may have to start vacuuming to keep her happy. I'd prefer to have them of the floor, too, just to keep them from getting knocked over, but that hasn't been a problem in the current man cave. I also liked having all the 12 fretters on the same row, but I don't know if they'll fit in the 4 foot space with the angled hangers. I also like separating the electrics from the acoustics, but don't know if I can do that. SWMBO likes them all on one wall, rather than in 4 different groups like I had in the man cave. This wall is 25 feet long, so it shouldn't be a problem, but the entertainment center takes up about 10 feet of that. I took a couple of "before" pictures and hope to finally post some pics as this progresses. I should make moving less of a pain and since it's taking a long time to sell our current house, I have lots of time to work on it. Unfortunately, I've hardly touched a guitar lately except to carry it in the case. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Both good ideas. Behind the guitar wall is attic space that has access from the garage below. I've been trying to make storage room out of it and assume there's similar space on the other side of the room, but with no access from below. When SWMBO complained that my guitar cases were taking up all of one closet and part of another (actually, I complained that she was putting her stuff in "my" closet) I suggested we punch a hole in the wall and see if we can come up with storage space behind there. Any logical person would have said there's no way we would cut holes in a wall that we just paid to paint, but SWMBO suggested we bring the cabinet guy back to do it. Owning two houses has me concerned about finances, but I'll keep triack of ideas for later. I was thinking of something between Miles and Vince Gill, with closet doors that would open to reveal shelves with guitar cases side by side. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Slowly getting there. It's hard to hang a 10 foot board without help, so I had to wait until SWMBO wasn't working and could help. The top board is up with screws 2 feet apart, so I decided to put the guitar hangers 2 feet apart as well. The bottom board may go up tonight if I can figure out how to do it alone and will be painted to match the wall by the weekend. The hangers will go on after the paint dries, 6 guitars on top and 5 on the bottom row. I have 5 12 fretters, so they'll go on the bottom. The electrics will go on the angled Hercules hangers separately.
I filled one closet and part of another with cases, so I'm looking into knocking out the wall opposite the guitars for storage. We should have done that when we had all the contractors doing the remodel, but we know where to find them. I may wait until after we're settled in and have our current house sold so we have something in a bank account. Pictures won't come until it's done. I only want to figure out how to post them one time. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I had the basement in our other house, which seemed more appropriate for a man cave. This one is above the garage. The guitar stools were on ebay a few years ago just before Christmas. A few other OFCers got them. My wife got the last ones. That's why they are two different sizes.
Thanks Arthur for posting the pictures. I don't know why I couldn't insert the pics after the first couple.
The room looked a lot bigger when it was empty. It was the last room done because they ran out of carpet for part of it. Then we moved in the $75 entertainment center and worked around it. My meager electric guitars went on one side and the acoustics on the other. Hercules angle hangers for the electrics and Swing String Stage hangers for the acoustics. I had most of them before, but it took me awhile to find the Swing Strings to match. I painted the boards for the hangers to match the walls, although I liked Damon's striped design. That wasn't a design decision as much as it was based on paint availability. Note the Ovation K-6300 to the right of the entertainment center. That was a surprise find after I was done and almost didn't have room.
The fake plants and non-Porsche nic nacs were my wife's contribution, along with a lot of heavy lifting, tape measure and board holding. I'm still working on the garage. It will probably take a few years. I need to spend some time playing those guitars. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I almost forgot. Patch, you and anyone else are welcome to visit Boise most any time. Prior attempts at a Northwest OFC Gathering here have failed, but Waskel, Stonebobbo and Standing Ovation have made quick visits. SO used to come on a regular basis for work, but I haven't seen him in a few years. It's not really on the way to anywhere, so I can't ask to stop by, but there are other things to do here besides see my guitar room.
Brad, I don't think I'll do the neon and banners. I just had someone offer to sell me an old Ovation neon sign, but it was too pricey and I didn't want to start down that trail. I think the wall across from the guitars will be Porsche pictures because the garage walls are filling up with junk. It's tough giving up a basement. Even with a 4 car garage, it gets filled up with junk that used to sit in storage in the basement.
I didn't do anything with the electrical. The room was left alone except for carpet and paint. We still haven't sold our old house, so all the money for upgrades hasn't happened. There were several wish list items that would have been nice to do when the contractors were there, but they got shelved because I could see this deal going upside down if the house didn't sell. Nothing that can't be fixed by postponing retirement.

Location: Boise, Idaho | The little humidifier I have seems to work, although it struggles when we get really cold and the heat is on all the time. It doesn't ever get humid enough here in the desert to need a dehumidifier in the summer. One of the projects that got shelved was installation of a whole house humidifier. The guitar room is on a separate heating and air conditioning system, which was a nice upgrade by the prior owner. That might make it simpler to humidify the guitar room through the HVAC system. |

I'll have to wait and see. Summers in the basement were never that dry. I could go a whole summer with one tank of water. The room above the garage might be a lot more dry. If it gets bad I may have to go to a humidifier on the HVAC system. |

It's tough to pull out a 12 fretter from the bottom row without bumping the 14 fretters in the top row. The other possibility is to put the 5 12 fretters on the top and the 6 14 fretters on the bottom, but it would be a pain to move all the hangers. I'll just have to be more careful. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Another update, sort of. You can see in the "decor" picture that the guitars are all on the left and there's a few Porsche odds and ends. The wall on the right was left blank with the possibility that I would cut out a door or two to gain access to attic space behind it with the idea of putting guitar cases in there. Last weekend I finally got up in that attic space (not fun crawling around trusses and joists and insulation) and found that, although it is huge, probably a couple hundred square feet, it is useless. The builder ran duct pipe, gas lines and all the wiring for the whole house along the floor of the attic to the electrical panel and gas meter down below. The builder of our last house would never have let all that storage space go to waste, but that's what I get for buying a spec home. The wall will now be covered with Porsche pictures to complete the decor. My efforts have been directed toward my other room, the garage. |
