While looking for the lubricants for my turntable I came across this site, which is where I bought a lube kit for my Dual 1229.

Thanks. I was looking for a new Shure stylus to play the Going to the Dogs album. I haven't used the turntable in years and it has been quite a challenge finding a new stylus. Seems they're used to scratch records these days.

I have a Dual 1229Q still working perfectly.

For those of you who remember that music can actually sound like music instead of compressed, thin, tiny frequency digital crap, here is a wonderful site that I get much use from.

this place right here

There are many great articles from experts that may help explain why there's a never ending struggle to make digital effects and the like sound natural.

Fellows, out of curiousity, how are you connecting your turntables, i.e. what kind of amp, preamp, speakers, cables, etc.? Recently built a vacuum tube amp (DIY set from Sun Audio Japan) because solid state amp did not create an emotive ambience. Slowly moving more and more to tube system

Vic: You seem way ahead of in terms of knowing what you like and how to set it up. Have a 2A3 tube power amp at 4.5W per channel. Don't have turntable (Dual) here, left mine with my mother in Sweden with all the LPs. Still using CD player (Ah Tjoeb) but looking for turntable. Do you recommend any?

STK : I have THORENS TD 124 , a Radio-Studio Rec. Player ( a 5 kilo cast iron platter with an Aliminum platter on top that can be lifted without stopping the cast-iron ), for your purpose , I would recommend the REGA " PLANAR 3 " , with it`s own ToneArm , build in Scotland , with a P.U that can cope with 0,5 - 1 gram stylus pressure , a LENCO L 75 ( 4 kilo platter ) would be Good ( Swiss made ) , with P.U which has 1,5 - 2 gr. stylus pressure , but since U mention Sweden , why , try to get hold of a BEOGRAM 4004 (Danish ) or Similar , with Tangential ToneArm , and B&o P.U , I do n`t know that specific Amp. of yours , but it should be very musical sounding , since Your amp. seems to be a Single-Ended Amp. , theoretically ( and in real life ) the best Power-Amp. design , specially so , when running in class A mode ( High Bias ) , ..congrats !!...connect a few horn speakers
and You `ll be able to " fill the room with Music " , even a large room , since that You are in Japan , it should be easy for You to obtain a couple of FOSTEX FE 108 drivers , and build a pair of these ,..
http://diyaudioprojects.com/Drivers/FE108/FE108S_horn.htm

..Your SE valve amps. will drive them nicely , and your neighbors will enjoy them too.. :)

Great stuff, Vic. Meant to go to Akihabara soon, the area with all the latest electronic stuff in Tokyo. With the favorable exchange rate, high end audio such as Accuphase is almost half of what it costs in the U.S.

Here is the link to Sun Audio. It has been rated by Stereophile. http://www2.big.or.jp/~sunaudio/

STK : Thanks for the link , Nice Looking Amp. ( No feed-back !! ) ahh..the sweet sound of a clean sinus-wave , un-interupted by x-over distortion , only a Single - Ended can deliver that , soft headroom by means of a valve - rectifier , You `re doing Good , Congrats !! What Control / Pre-amp. have U got ? if the pre-amp. is equipped with valves , then U may want to look at a High-Output P.U , such as the DENON DL 103 ( I think )...for speaker cable OFC Copper offcourse.. :)

That`s a Fine P.U , I would be thoughtful about upgrading , it`s of utmost importance that the P.U fits the ToneArm , ( stylus-compliance versus ToneArm mass/resonance ..yada yada etc.)

yes it works fine. I run mostly legacy stuff.
my "bedroom system" is a complete bang and oulfsen beomaster, turntable, cassette, tuner and integrated into bose 901's
I used to run a tandberg but traded that for the B & O

my main system is a little more complex
HK 1000 linear tracking turn table
bic beam box (antennea for the tuner)
furnman power conditioner
tascam 301 cassette mk II
tascam 301 cd player
paragaon tube preamp (made in California in the late seventies very rare and highly sought after)
HK citation II tube amp
Mcintosh mr 67 tube tuner
4 bose 901's with preamp/crossover
crown vfx2a crossover
bsr bass commmode gutter for a 15" jbl for lows
powered by a crown d150a

I am awaiting the arrival of a Lavry DA 10 this is a digital to analog convertor. Everything I have read is positive and this should give a more live feel to the sound. I will report on it when it comes in and I find the time to hook it up.

edited to add that the with any turntable but especially linear tracking and the HK you need to have it perfectly level. what a difference it makes!!!!!!!!

Al ,

..now that Is an Impressive list , 901`s , so U `re in the Direct/Reflecting game eh , please say that the single speaker points towards U , too often have I seen/heard the opposite , with their owners saying , .." Yeah , I like `em but they sound a little huge " ...mygawd , they`re not 802`s , and U`ve got a Citation II , ( talk about a Humdinger X-tra Ordinaire ) , stuff that dreams are made out of , the very first High Current Amp. ever , and they still make `em according to Matti Ottala`s recipe , but what caught my attention was the word " PARAGON " ..( did U mean Paradigm ? ).. , JBL`s famed Stereo-box , I assume U know what I`m talkin` about , anyways , feast for the eyes and ears...

http://www.vintage-audio.com.ua/en/cat/152/363.html

..and Congrats with that swish " reeking of quality " convertor.. :)

nope not paradigm but PARAGON it is model 10 tube preamp. I have yet to see another one. they were made in the seventies in california and were considered high end audiophile. I was offered $1500 for it back about 15 years ago but could not part with it. I like the sound of it way too much.

as for the 901's I don;t have them optimally set up. I am married and it was hard enough sneaking in 4 of those into the room. I basically use them for mid and tweeters and let the jbl give me the thump for the bass.

I just found enough adaptors to hook up the lavry da 10 OH MY GOD. I cannot believe how much it not only warms up the sound but makes it sound so LIVE. Unbelieveable. I read a ton of good stuff about them and contacted them on a whim to become a dealer and get to try one of the DA convertors. YES they are expensiive but if you are playing in the audiophile league nothing is cheap. Most of my stuff is legacy gear but it is all really cool stuff.

gotta run and play the rest of brubeck's time out cd, take 5 sounds magnificent!!!!!!

PARAGON- This company came out with a few very interesting preamplifiers during the later 1970's. I have fondly remembered experiences with them.

According to former Paragon owner, Mark Deneen, the original Model 10, designed by "consulting engineer" Bruce Moore, was "unmanufacturable" and only 50 were ever made. I never heard one, but I did hear, and even owned, the replacements, the Model 12 and 12A. They were excellent in their day, maybe the best available, with full-bodied sound, spatial information and good retrieval of decay. That was breakthrough performance at the time.

I will have to take a pic I just sent an e mail to one of the orginal partners in the company and he sent me a crude schematic. unfortunately that is all that remains. he now runs a company called juicy music audio.

I e mailed bruce moore but got no reply. he also designs his own stuff.

wow I never knew i was such an audiophile I just thought I had a pile of old junk LOL

Vintage gear has some great attributes if you are willing to spend the time and money to keep them running efficiently. Sounds like a mighty fine system Al.

I have a B&O setup in my bedroom (minus the turntable).

I always wanted a linear table but just never got around to buying one. I got an old industrial Techniques MKII.

I've got some strange omnidirectional tweeters that I think were designed and/or built by Hegeman. They have nearly vertical cones that taper down to the voice coil. Something like an upside down Ohm Walsh driver. The spiders around the voice coil are degraded so I've never tried them.

Anybody need a set of Karlson cabinets?

The Karlsons came with 12" early 60s Pioneers, with a small horn tweeter. Not sure if I still have the speakers. The cabinets are the kind of thing that's too good to throw out but hard to find someone local who would want them. Heavy to ship!

Al ,
Any chance of having a glance at that schematic ?

..and I noticed the KARLSON being mentioned , an Uncle build 2 modified versions , still has them , it was like this , RADIO BULLETIN , a magazine and importer of components ( U know , for the amateur by the amateur ) well , they decided to turn the design into a bassreflex , so , they ported it , instead of maintaing the slats , what a disaster !!..it is intended for P A applications ( Dancings etc. er ..Disco..Band ) , having a " horn -like " behavior , the port killed it , the driver needs to have P A characteristics ( in those days called " Professional Speaker " ) , ( stiff suspension etc. ) initially designed with a JENSEN speaker , overhere , a FANE ( Atlass ?? ) was used....a Big Fat 20 Hz. whallopped through the walls , finally , a speaker that could do justice to the low freq. of a Full -sized concertwing , with a 10 watts amplifier , there`s a whole family of them , have a look...plans..pics..

http://home.planet.nl/~ulfman/artic.htm

..yet the one that I wanted / still would like to have...

http://www.vintage-audio.com.ua/en/cat/152/363.html

Al,
Lurking in the bottom ( last but not least ) must be that CITATION II , with 6550`s ..?., ( them do n`t look like KT 88`s ), and do n`t U find it odd that the XO-filter in the all new JBL/CROWN PRX (P A) series is only half as good ,compared to your VFX 2 A , BTW , none of the amps. I`ve built had to go through

Thanks for the link to Garage 'A Records, BruDev. I ordered a stylus for the old Shure cartridge and got it today. Found out we haven't hooked up the turntable since we moved into the house over 12 years ago. Had to drill a hole to run some wires through the back of the shelves. Listening to the Kaman boys right now on the Going to the Dogs album that came with the OFC guitar.
Makes me want to sit down and jam with my family, but none of us play that well.

FYI the lube kit I bought has enough in it to do several tables. So, if you're into Dual 1229s it's a good buy.
