Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | It's not a huge deal, but it sure is inconvenient. I've been told by several relatives that I've been paying for a very active youth over the last several years. And I guess it's time for the next installment. I get to have a rotator tear and impingement repaired tomorrow on my dominant arm. Sooooo.......no guitar for a good while, among other things. The surgery looks pretty routine though, and I had the same issue fixed on my other arm several years ago with no serious complications. Wish me luck. And be patient with any posts I make in the near future. Typing with just my left index finger will be challenge enough, but I anticipate the pain meds raising the level of difficutly into humorous/embarrassing territory. |

My orthopedic doctor explained how the human skeletal system is a marvel of engineering.... except for the shoulders.

You won't be playing guitars for a while but will you still be able to take pictures of guitars? |

I had rotator cuff surgery to repair a "massive tear" (actual medical term). The surgery went well. Pain meds needed for the first week and nice to have for the second (yea yea nice to have anytime). I did Physical Therapy for 6 months. The first two weeks are about range of motion and then you very very slooooowly work your strength back.
I had an ACL repair on my knee years back. For that repair you can do the PT and really "He Man" it and work through it as fast as you're motivated. For the rotator cuff you can't "He Man" it because your trying to work the small muscles under the bigger stronger ones. They will only heal so fast and you just have to do exactly as the Physical Therapist tells you. It's less about strength and more about precise form in doing the exercises. After a couple of weeks it's no longer painful but just plain boring. But your final outcome will depend on you doing it as long and as much as instructed.
As far as guitar goes, I wouldn't be surprise if after 2 weeks you get cleared to do some finger picking. If the Dr or PT person is unsure bring your guitar in and let them watch. But the position of your right arm for playing is to keep it out a bit from your body and that's the position that they'll want you to keep your arm in. Strumming might be too much but some light finger picking might just be fine.
Good luck! |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I've told this story many times, but be sure to ask your PT when you can play guitar. When I broke my wrist I finished my PT before I asked when I could start playing guitar again. She said she wished I had asked sooner because she could have worked the guitar playing into my therapy. I never did regain the range of motion in my left wrist. |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Thanks for asking Nancy. It's greatly appreciated. I'm healing steadily and even managing to type with two hands at the moment. The best news though is that I didn't realize I was trading for a therapy guitar when I acquired my custom parlor, this year's September poster child. Last night, I figured I could do worse than try to get my arm around its smaller body, and discovered that if I was very careful, I could manage some finger-picking for a short while. It was definitely good for the soul. So hopefully, healing will contiue apace. It stilll hurts, and the range of motion is severely limited, but it gets a little better every day. Thanks everyone for all the well wishes. I've been here every day, but not up to typing anything, and this little note has already made up my mind to get the sling back on ASAP. I'm definitely looking forward to having my right arm get useful again....and teaching my son how to throw a football this autumn. |

| Slow and steady wins the race on this one Patch. Maybe your finger picking will benefit from this in the long run. When I had mine done I couldn't play pickup basketball for 6 months. In the interim I practiced my left handed layup and now I can shoot that shot pretty well.
Don't think you're getting out of putting together another one of those wonderful calendars for 2016. |

Location: Frozen Tundra of Minnesota | Hi Patch! Great to hear from you, and that you are feeling a wee bit better!
I was wondering if one of those Palour Guitars would work for you - but I didn't know if you had one or not, or an ultra slim guitar - you wouldn't have to put your arm out as far, but I don't know if the position of the full face would hurt your shoulder, most likely! I am glad you have your Palour to keep you out of trouble! (Well, as much as that is possible!)
The 12 oz arm curls are good for you too, but I don't know if you can mix that with your pain pills! It does make the time go faster! LOL!!!! You have goals to achieve, and that incentive will help you get through this hard part! My goal was to be able to reach up to the top of the cupboards to get my bird down, it was the incentive I needed to work at it every day!
Keep working at it, as they allow you to, and keep us posted okay? |

Ovation's parlor concept is, IMHO, one of their very best ideas. I schemed for years to build a custom one, but alas, the factory was shut down before the opportunity fully coalesced. Then, very soon after Fender stabbed all of us in the back and then spit on the factory's grave for good measure (Animosity? What do you mean, animosity?), this one showed up on Craig's List of all places, and was even within an hour's driving distance of my home! I was broke. So I traded my pristine 1987-4 Collector's for it. I have no regrets at all. Hopefully I can replace that 87C someday though. Take a look Nancy. Ovation has not built a finer instrument. 1997-X Collector's |

Location: Muenster/Germany | Hi Patch, I´ve just read this...I´m feeling with you, had a bad impingement syndrome a couple of years ago, was not even able to dress myself but nevertheless had to work. And no deep-bowl guitars for quite a time, that was the worst of it. I wish you a quick and complete recovery! |
