Interesting that the amp has an XLR input to facilitate the use of Glen's Prismatone pickup equipped guitars which seemed to all have XLR outputs.

I have a similar model amp. Very under-rated amps. Cool display.

Wayne,

I've got the exact same amp with the XLR (acoustic) input. It's also got the original one button footswitch.

When the Little Dude became the Guitar Dude in 1970 - 71 the first issues had the XLR. It was short lived, so the majority of the Guitar Dudes do not have it before they were phased out several years later.

I have never played through a Guitar Dude without the XLR, but the one I have sounds great for a solid state amp. With certain settings it almost sounds like a tube amp.

On Jerome's website there are several bulletins that show the Guitar Dude with the XLR. However, I believe he has the years wrong because they weren't introduced until after 1970.

Thanks, Bob.

So, is the input actually marked "acoustic" as opposed to "microphone"?

The input is labeled ACOUSTIC INPUT.

Wow, that's interesting. Note how the pins are labeled: not like a microphone input which would be pin 1 - ground, pin 2 - positive, pin 3 - ground. This shows +22 volts on pin 2 which is the voltage required to run the old Prismatone Baldwin preamps.

I've never heard of a Prismatone equipped Ovation having a Baldwin preamp but perhaps this was the case.

As of a few years ago, there were more vintage Ovation amps in Miles' boathose than maybe anywhere else in the world, for a single location. It was truly fascinating.

Damn! That was a TON of money back then for a smallish acoustic amp.

Bob F;

What do you make of the way those jacks were wired? Do you know of any Ovation guitars having a Baldwin or Baldwin-type preamp?

Wayne, the only other person I know (as well as you) that has one is Hendrik, ....which is just like the one in the ad. Of course he also has a Baldwin...in fact I found where I asked him about the preamp...but you were in that topic also...

http://ovationfanclub.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=34651

"It 'only' needs a 9v battery, so it isn't the same setup as the Baldwin guitar(s). It sounds a bit less fat in comparison with the Baldwin; maybe the preamp is the reason of that."

Here is his guitar

And the ad   Which blows up pretty nice

Hendrik did share a guy who had a Pris CA for sale, and he sent me pictures ... appeared to be the same guitar as in the ad, identical to Hendrik's.  You wonder how many CA's still are out that have one. A lot of #'s have been thrown around...were you ever able to ascertain a ballpark # produced?

Number produced? No, not at all.

Ovation had to have been cranking guitars out at a great pace in 1970-71 but they switched over to there own pickup pretty fast.

Prismatone equipped Ovations are rare enough on their own but to see this amp wired up for a Baldwin type preamp begs the question did some of the guitars have Baldwin innards as well as the pickups?

Hendrik's guitar has the early version Ovation preamp and standard 1/4" output jack. Mine has an XLR out put but no preamp at all but the wiring in mine had been monkeyed with at sometime or other and had to be rewired to work correctly. Maybe it had a preamp originally, hard to say.

Wayne, Jay, a few times I've heard that Ovation bought about 100 - 150 Prismatone pickups and preamps. I don't think they all ended on Country Artists, cause the R&D department experimented with various models. As above ad shows; they also tried it on a steel strung Balladeer. You both discussed on the Chetboard that Glen played this guitar a few times on his show. He never had it miked though.. Hope you guys are all well .

I have read what little there is out there about Ovation and the Prismatone but it is these amps that I am curious about. Why would the XLR input be wired like that unless it was to power a Baldwin preamp or something similar?
