Hi all,

I'm not really a new member, having joined some years ago, but I don't generally post, just (rather selfishly) like to browse and assimilate information from those who know more than I do. Anyway, I haven't usually got anything useful to say!

Unfortunately, I've now become disabled and can't play anymore, which is a great wrench as music has been my life for over 50 years and I now have to adjust to just listening and appreciating the works of others.

Anyway, I wonder if someone can give me some guidance at this stage. I have decided that my beloved Ovation has to go as it's not doing me any good sitting in it's case in the bedroom and I haven't a clue how much I should ask for it. It's a Left Handed Glenn Campbell 12 string, Model 1618-4. It's in it's original case which shows signs of being carried around for all those years, but is still serviceable. I have the original Registration Card showing the purchase from Zoot Horn Music in November 1978. The guitar itself certainly shows signs of wear and has the odd knock and scrape, but still plays well and is not beyond being brought back to mint I should think.
So there it is, I will be selling it with a heavy heart, so I'd like to have some idea of what to ask. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks and kindest regards to all

Hi and Welcome,
Sorry to hear about your health. Normally we would just point you to the FAQ to the section on "What is my guitar worth" but I don't think you're going to find a reference point for a lefty GC 12-String. The regular ones are in the $500-ish range +/- $100. That being said... it's ultimately what it worth to you. I have a general rule that seems to work for Ovation. Figure out what it was worth new. You have the receipt. You should be able to get that for it today in most cases. There aren't many things that you could buy, use for 30+ years, in many cases even earn a living from using it, and then... sell it for about the same thing you paid for it.

After a little research.. Suggested retail in 82 was $745.00, but you have the actual receipt from those days to see the street price which I assume was about 20% less or about $600. A non-lefty recently sold for $500. So it appears my formula is still in the ballpark.

Hi Miles,

Thanks so much for your reply and advice. Actually, I was thinking in the same range as you suggested, although I haven't got the actual receipt, only the registration form. I'm in the U.K. so I don't know if the same rules apply here with regard to pricing, but I'll give it a try. There's something that has been puzzling ever since I bought this guitar ..... I bought the guitar at a yer old from the guy who bought it new. Apparently he went to N.Y. to buy this because he was told that Ovation wouldn't export lefties, for some reason. Do you reckon this is likely, or is it a bit of "folk lore"? Mind you, that's not the reason I bought it. I bought it because I really wanted it!! Anyway, thanks again and kind regards. Lee

Hi Lee,
I've gone a made you a full member so you can post in the General Forum. Post a picture too. There are some folks around that will know if there was any "we don't export" stuff. Seems a little odd to me, but there might not have been enough market for left-handed guitars. In any case, post some pictures in the General Forum with your question about exports and I'm sure someone will chime in.
