While searching around I have found 47RI's that sold for around $4500 way-back-when.
Understand that there will never be another one of these made.
Even if DW starts producing Adamii, it won't be the same.
Insurance value? (Let's play Antiques Roadshow) At least $10K.

As far as the market goes...
I have paid way below reasonable price on a few guitars lately.
Also, this market is why I have not sold anything lately.
I keep listing stuff, but nobody wants to pay me what it is worth.

Okay... This can be a really philosophical vs. reality question.
I paid $267 for my GCS771-4C, including shipping and case.
I would say that the Value of that guitar is much more than the Current Market.
But remember... A guitar is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay and seller is willing to accept.

Location: Boise, Idaho | We keep changing the words. The title said "valuation", but the first post asked about the "going rate". Something can have value, but until there are comparable sales, there's no way to tell what the "going rate" is. Nothing is going. Same with market value. There has to be a market. If nobody is buying, there's no market, so no market value. Anything at the higher end is harder to value. Our house sold for much less than its value because the market was bad. Since slothead said he wants to sell it, the market value and going rate are the same. What would a reasonable buyer pay for it? Kurt may be right, but there really haven't been enough sales to tell. List it for $6K and see if you get any interest. |

I have wanted one of these since I first saw Tony's.... But the few I have seen come up for sale either came up when I didn't have the money, or were gone in under 3 minutes. Got paid for a horse, AND my Tax Refund yesterday... and this one was still there this morning. It seemed Divine Direction that it was supposed to be mine! Who am I to say No to the Big Man Upstairs??? And the Seller came down another $400, that was all the acknowledgment I needed that it was meant to be!

I prefer Damon's theory that one more guitar is enough. I like to rationalize that I at least need guitars with different fret widths, fretboard radiuses, string types and number to play the songs I do, plus a bunch of different variations of electric guitars. My wife thought this sounded reasonable when I first told her I would limit my purchases to different models of Ovations. After I had about a dozen she found out there were probably a hundred left. |

My take on the 'Holy Grail' is a wee bit different than yours, to me it doesn't represent the Most Perfect, but the Quest for the most Unobtainable. Something that touches something deep inside of you, and you want or need to find it, and hold it because it is that beautiful, and that rare.
Only problem with my Holy Grails, are once I have crossed one off the list, I am onto the hunt for the next one. LOL!!! It is a Quest, if you will. I don't really believe there is one, 'Perfect guitar', as each person has their own qualifications for what would be "Perfect". And to be really honest, I already have what I consider the "Perfect" guitar (for me), and that is my 1976 Custom Legend 1619-4. All of the others could be replaced (at great expense, I know...) but that 1976 CL could not be replaced, and the action and sound from it are irreplaceable to me. So definitely Not Perfect by normal standards, or compared to other more expensive pieces, but Perfect to me!

Location: Canada | Well a 47RI was kind of a "dream guitar" for me as well, and it seems Nancy has some great talent to find gems. I just consider myself very lucky to have found a 1687RI of similar vintage, and be content with that. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | My dream guitar would be an original slothead, so I compensated with the OFC 1 and #47RI. I don't know if it would fit my definition of the Holy Grail if that meant replacing the OFC and #47. I probably won't have to make that decision.
If you could be a saint without having a sense of humor, yes my wife is a saint. I think she gets a perverse enjoyment out of "complaining" to our friends about my Ovation obsession and I enjoy pointing out to her that there are many that share my obsession or are "worse" than me. I used to have a lot more bad examples than I've found recently. I don't know if I could say she tolerates it as much as she tries to ignore it. Last night she told me our daughter was going to the Tulip Festival "someplace near Seattle". I said it was in Mt. Vernon and that I've been there. She asked how I knew that and I reminded her Miles lives there. After the blank stare, I said "Mr. Ovation." After another "what the hell are you talking about" I explained that Miles was one of the founders of the OFC and had an Ovation Gathering in Mt. Vernon a few years ago. I learned about the Tulip Festival from that trip. This is, after all, an educational forum.

Location: Utah | I got my first Ovation from someone on this forum! My daughter had an Applause 3/4 size guitar as her first, and then I bought her a 1778T Red Flame when she was about 14. We walked into the acoustic room at Guitar Center and as soon as she saw it on the wall she declared that was the one she wanted! I was thrilled, as I had always wanted an Ovation from when I was her age. That got me interested in getting back into playing when she got the Red Flame, which led me here, which led me to the beautiful 6778LX-VN (looked very much like the '07 Collectors), which I recently sold to Alison. Being here I then bought a new '07C, then the Ute for Sara's high school graduation. Then a Hamer, Patriot, 1537, 2080, Viper, and Breadwinner.
Soon to add the Bearclaw anniversary Adamas. Several pictures from the factory show racks of the Anniversary guitars in process, so it won't be long.

I am going to assume that the 47RI in question used to be mine......and yes, it played and sounded great. I really hated to sell that one but at the time I had another 47RI (which I also sold but I can't remember where it went). Having the twin longnecks and original wideneck slothead formerly purchased by Linda McCartney for Wings tends to make you a bit jaded when it comes to owning so many incredible guitars and it feels good to let them go to those that still need the thrill of one of the finest guitars Ovation ever made.
