I am now the proud owner of a 70's era Eclipse!

$560 delivered from a Guitar Center in Southington , CT.

That is a fair price, yes?

I came across one of these once many years ago at a local shop and really liked it. Came back the next day to buy it and it was gone.

...but now i finally have one!

Guy I talked to at GC says it's in great shape. All stock - minimal fretwear and only thing keeping it from pristine caliber is some very light buckle rash on back. I have 3 days once received to check it out and if I don't like it, can return it to my local GC for a full refund. I'm not a big GC fan, but that is a nice policy when buying a guitar site unseen...

So what tips and suggestions for setup with amplification can any fellow eclipse-sers offer? This is my first real semi-hollow.

My main amp is an Ampeg Reverberocket R12R.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thx.

Chris

I imagine that Ampeg will do just fine depending on the music you play.

Yeah - love that reverberocket...

Here's a question about the p/u's...

I see that most of the Eclipses have single blade p/u's - Höfner 513B's if this page is correct:

http://guitarz.blogspot.com/2011/11/ovation-eclipse-1235-5-semi-hol...

That said, my eclipse has offset dual blade p/u's - they look similar to these dual blade Schallers on this Hurricane:

Did the Eclipses indeed have different p/u's depending on year?

If so, which are better??

Err, I should have said Tornado... but I have seen photos of Hurricanes with similar split offset blade p/u's as well.

I have mostly seen the single blade, but I have seen the later Schaller's as well. Just a guess, but as they went to Schaller tuners and such later, they probably just switched everything over.

Yeah - dunno.

I am also seeing these listed as the p/u depending on year:

"Dual Humbuckers Chrome-Plated DeArmond,Patented adjustible tri-mount"

That's what is listed on the baronaudio site, anyways.

I've also read where some of these p/u's aren't truly humbuckers but singlecoils with an odd doublewound design

You are free to post in the General section. Maybe someone has lead on pickups there. The "Dual Humbuckers Chrome-Plated DeArmond,Patented adjustible tri-mount" that BaronAudio site is wrong for the eclipse. I'll have a talk with him about it.

Great - thx.

Whatever they are, they sound fantastic!

Got the guitar yesterday and tuned her up and plugged her in last night... wow!

Will restring her and set the intonation this weekend...

Guitar is in great shape - only a couple minor dings.

The main volume pot is pretty scratchy, so that will be a fun clean-out since the pots are mounted directly to the wood top. I've seen ES-335 owners recommend a process using contact cleaner and a piece if straw or hose placed directly over the pot stem where you saturate the stem with a few shots and let it soak in.... gonna give that a try.
