An 1198AV40 "Bearclaw", with inline pickup, will be mine shortly. I jumped on this the moment I knew Al was taking orders and believe my commitment may be rewarded with a single digit issue number of 50. I'll wait until it arrives to post pictures as I cannot believe my good fortune as it's just a little surreal right now :-) Very happy and for those who did not receive in this batch, stay the faith. Let's just say I've played Ovations since the mid 70s, and I own an original slothead (#43)...so there is not much more for me in the Adamas line.

That is why Damon uses a simple blanket as his background (even if it is a Magical Blanket!!), nothing to distract you from the focal point.

Which I miss very much since it made a tiny bit of pretty sparkle on my bridge.. unlike the colored D'Addarios which make it look more like something from a kid's jump house game. It's like, if you don't know which string goes into which hole without using a color code, maybe you shouldn't be stringing a guitar in the first place. |

Location: Colorado | A couple quick comments: The Mustang is my wife's (Tho I gave it to her for her 50th birthday). In spring of 2007 Mike Cook (Fugot), Cliff, ProfessorBB, StephenT, and I got together for a few hours in Boulder to share a few guitars (understatement), and the Karmann Ghia made its first appearance there. Cliff took the expected and encouraged liberty of documenting the attendees and some of the guitars in the Ghia. Then my daughter and I drove the Ghia to the Rocky Raccoon event Allison hosted in Hot Springs, SD. It was a heated close competition between the Ghia and Mark in Boise's Porsche to determine the smallest amount of storage space allotted for guitars at an OFC event...kind of the opposite of that photo going around of some van full of guitars, or Beal's famous SUV deliveries in Amelia. So I figured I'd start the new ones off in a car. Mark - the trip was a hoot, but Denver to Salt Lake to Boise to Seattle and back in the Stang would have been sweltering, and neither of us probably could have afforded stopping every hour for Hi-Test. Gotta love a car that gets 8 MPG, and the manual says 105 or higher octane. BTW, I mainly got the guitars to make sure the OFC got in on the allocation of them, not sure what form that needs to take now...I do like them...I don't need them - any suggestions? Maybe some brotherhood or sisterhood of traveling guitars. Nancy got one of the Bear Claws...any one get one of the Black and Golds? Btw, the guitars are both #3 of 50....kind of fraternal twins. Kevin Cronin got #1...only one other out there before these. Al's service was stellar. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Geez, Mark. You got dressed up for those guys? I understand the old car on long trips thing. That phase is over for me, along with craving for my old Javelin. We just got back from a 300 mile day trip for lunch in John Day, Oregon, driving Linda's Cayman. She thinks it's uncomfortable, but I could drive it all day, and did. Most of a tank of gas and got almost 30 mpg, driving pretty fast. An old car just won't do that. Enjoy it around town and close. I'd love to see more guitar and car pictures. Seems like I was the only one doing that, although Professor had a great one with his motorcycle a few years ago. |

Location: undisclosed | You need to drive the right old car, last month I drove my 65 Volvo 122S to LA, back up the coast to SF then home for a 2500 mile trip. I got from 25 to 30 miles per gallon, depending on how flat it was and did the speed limit, 70 for long stretches. Of course going 70- 75 everybody passes you at 85. |

It had to be custom-made as they only were producing cutaways... They kept the form on file for me so I could have more made; wonder if they used it for these? The sound hole(s) are cut afterward, so any style is possible. I'd like to know because I paid extra for it!!!

It had to be custom-made as they only were producing cutaways... They kept the form on file for me so I could have more made; wonder if they used it for these? The sound hole(s) are cut afterward, so any style is possible. I'd like to know because I paid extra for it!!!

I received one of the anniversary guitars and was almost in tears. What a complete DUD. Beautiful YES, but sounded like an absolute wet noodle. I looked inside to make sure that Darren's sweatshirt didn't get stuffed in there by mistake. The tone was truly awful - no sustain, no ring, no nothing. Sounded about like a Les Paul unplugged. All I could think was how freaking stupid of me to throw away thousands of dollars on a hope and a dream. Lesson learned ... time to move on and start buying with my head and not with my heart.
I got to thinking that maybe something was fugged up in the saddle. Maybe they ran out of shims and used chewing gum. So I un-strung it and threw the still brand new strings in the trash. Saddle looked fine, so I just thought well that's that and I guess all I can do is put it on ebay at a fire sale price since it would sicken me to keep it in the house as a constant reminder of how stupid I was. So I string it up with new EJ-16s.

Beal is so right about how new strings get dirty, and then die a quick death. One of my many duties, when I worked in a music store in the mid '80's, besides teaching guitar, was re-stringing, and setting up some of the new guitars the various companies shipped in every day. String Crud City. Yuck. The guy who owned the music store NEVER wiped the strings off after demonstrating a guitar, because he said," The dirtier the string, the dirtier the sound!" But then, he played heavy metal, so I guess it worked for him? Yours truly also found out the hard way, 3 weeks ago, when the, "new", batteries in my electric scooter suddenly went DEAD, while I was out riding it. YIKES! HELP! Thank God I made it home. About 10 days ago, when the service tech finally showed up, he said, "Those batteries were put in new, last September, 2015. They were supposed to last 5 years. They are completly dead. You need 2 new battteries. It looks like YOU GOT SOME DUDS! It happens every so often with these kinds of batteries, but not very. I'll write it up as an emergency, and maybe get you a loaner? You don't have to pay for anything. Sign here." I signed. The new batteries should be here next week. Watch out for DUDS, people. Apparently, they show up everywhere, in everything, when you least expect it. Just sayin'.

(Thank you Detlef Michel for turning me onto these!) I would like to try these on Bear though too, he is a Mid Bowl. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | So this arrived today. I'm still kinda blown away... I'll try to get better pictures tomorrow in the daylight. I think the OFC II was the best of the best at the time, but I have to say I think this is equal. I like the slot-head design which the OFC II didn't have, but it did have the booster which I guess I could get added to this one if I want. What this does represent to me, is the ringing in a new era of Ovation. One of the first off the line. There is not a fiber of carbon out of place on this guitar. It plays and sounds fantastic. To those waiting, on new guitars, the wait is worth it.

First impressions are the workmanship is perfection. And the strings have solid brass ends on them, not hollow color-coded balls. What are they, anybody know? The label inside the upper bout is quite dark and difficult to see, which I think is a benefit cosmetically. The wider neck is quite comfortable but I am making mistakes from not being used to it. Love it so far! |

Some of you aldreay knows that I had a GAS attack 3 days ago and I bought this beauty!! All the new models are very nice but the best improvement (to my opinion) that was done (except the old ugly logo  ) is the wood binding around the top and the neck.
It gives so much elegance and the guitars looks much more "valuable" and less "plastic" because of this !!
When I first saw the new models, I was a little bit surprised to not see the old and iconic rosette but it's definitely not a problem and more than this, it's wonderful.
And as often said one of my old boss: "it is useless to resist to changes, modernity always wins at the end..."
For sure, Ovation USA is back again with something new and innovative totally inspired by its roots. If you can afford one, you must contact Al and buy one. This Custom Legend is one of the nicest and Best Ovation I owns. Long life to Ovation Guitars !!

Interesting question Dave and I had the same interrogation when I saw the number of mine.

They did that often in the Model Horse Hobby too, they would come out with a Limited Edition Resin by a Really Great Artist, set the Edition at say, 100, sell out immediately, and then re-issue another mold or Open Edition of a slightly modified version. It devalued the Limited Edition and really upset people.
There isn't much you can say about it, next year, they might reissue the same guitars in a different color, and there isn't anything you can do about it, except not buy higher priced Limited Editions unless you really want the guitar for itself, and not future value. |

Location: Utah | I don't expect they'll actually manufacture 100 of each. At least the history of Ovation special editions has been they tend to not sell out.
Hopefully nobody here believes they're going to make money on their 40/50 Anniversary model! Probably we are taking a 50% immediate depreciation. But then I don't plan on selling mine anytime soon. My kids' inheritance will take the financial hit. |

but that just means more work and expense for me to send them out to customers that should have got them in the first place.......

So, I stalled on my 50th Anniversary order because of shipping concerns to Japan, and overall cash concerns, and after some of the orders were fulfilled, and people started sharing their beautiful new 50av Os and 40av As, I figured my window of opportunity had passed. I had my mind set on the 1678AV50-5, but...oh well. Then Mr. Pepiak came to the rescue and put up a thread on the OFC that an extra AV O was sent to him by mistake! Ooh, can that be the one for me...
Got in touch with Al and was able to secure the 1678 AV50 USA 10 of 50! Oh YES! Okay, okay, sorry, very sorry but this is the first world class guitar that I've been able to purchase. Always settled for the less expensive stuff, and repaired or upgraded them myself. Many kind friends have gifted some very fine instruments to me (and make no mistake, I love every one of them), but the most I've ever spent on a guitar has been about 350 bucks, and that was because of a bidding mistake on the bay! But this...this is no mistake. Haven't been able to decide how to get this to Japan yet, but Al was nice enough to send me a pic, and he didn't mind my sharing this here (Thanks Al!). I hope you all don't mind...

 Okay, so I sound like a naive little idiot, but from everything you all have said, I know this is going to be magnificent; and if ever there was a time to buy a new O, I figured this was it. There's no "E" at the end of the serial number; and there may be a day that some are produced with an "A" (for Asia), but see those three letters between the model # and the serial #? It says "USA." Now, that says it all for me. Like FlySig said, there's gonna be a depreciation that is pretty immediate, but it's really not an investment. This baby is going to get some serious playing time, and I'm gonna take this thing to every music store I frequent over here in Japan, and show them that O is back with a bang (just yesterday, this salesman actually was a bit upset that I kept insisting the Mother Ship was back)! Woohoo! Wait-a-minute is that going to be a problem? Jeez, over exuberance...I hate when that happens...sorry!

Al is waiting on me to get the logistics settled, but I think I'm gonna need to send it to a friend in the West Coast for a couple months before I get the chance to pick it up myself. "Replaceable" isn't an option for a limited build like this one. Even if I do insure it for the full price by sending it DHL or something; if they break it, it's not going to be replaceable! Hmmm..., but you know, I guarantee that everyone who plays this beauty is going to definitely want one, and I know the wait is going to be worth it! |

The quality of workmanship is really impressive. For this kind of money one does expect the highest level of materials both in terms of appearance and function. Everything about this guitar is luscious. The top is what sold me on this particular model, the deep red gloss on top of the carbon fiber. Pictures cannot do it justice. The guitar itself is very light weight compared to my other guitars. Two are older deep bowls and are heavier than modern LX guitars, and the other is an Adamas 2080 deep contour. This new 1198 is lighter but not neck heavy at all. Might there be a lighter weight truss rod than in the 2080? Whether it is the 12 fret to body design or perhaps a lighter truss rod, idk, but it does balance nicely on the knee.
As to the tone, it is different than all my other Ovations and Adamas. As such it isn't a duplicate and I'm not feeling any need to thin the herd. I would describe it as precise and, maybe, delicate. As with the 2080 the notes are all clear and distinct when playing a chord. In contrast, the 2080 is big and bold, wanting to be played energetically. The 1198 seems to want a lighter touch and a thinner pick, or fingerstyle. Think Jim Croce and James Taylor on the 1198 (if only I could play like them!). The bowl is resonant, so despite being light weight it has nice sustain and an even attack on the notes. In the studio I bet this would be a nice guitar to mic. |

The black buttons look and feel like ebony. I have both gold and pearloid buttons on some other tuners. When I change the strings, I can put them on and take a pic of each. Location: Lake Forest, CA | Haha! Yeah, I'm not afraid to make changes. The first thing I did when I got my Book Elite was to move the upper-bout strap button from the bass bout to the cutaway on the upper treble bout. That meant drilling a hole and installing another molly.
I was going to do the same to this one, but the contour bowl doesn't want to roll out from under my arm like the deep bowls do. So, I decided to leave the strap button where it is. For now... |

Location: Lake Forest, CA | So, I changed the strings on my 2077 from PB Lights to 80/20 extra lights and I like how it sounds a lot better. But, the top still sounded a little tight compared to my 1617. So, I decided to 'break in' the top. Here's a pic of me breaking in the top using my PrimeVibe. This device turns the guitar into a speaker. (Actually, it turns anything into a speaker, including the unattached tops I've taken off Jay's #485, the top I took off my 1617 and the bowl for the 1717 I recently bought) I've used this before to break in my 2078-TX5, so I know it works. 
You can 'play' whatever music you want through the guitar using an iPod as an input device. I've got a playlist of about 40 songs of pure acoustic guitar songs from George Sebolick. The idea is to let the guitar play music continuously for 40-100 hours and at the end, the top is completely 'seasoned' in the same way as if you played it without stopping for the same amount of time. The PrimeVibe is similar in concept to the ToneRite except tha the ToneRite is simply a buzzer that plays a continuous 60Hz 'tone' whereas the PrimeVibe plays music so it varies the tone depending on what music you play through it. |

Remember those things they sold back in the 80's that would turn any wall into speakers? I think Bose made them. You just clipped them onto the wall of a room and the wall turned into a speaker.. with fairly decent quality, too. But if you just plugged them into your stereo they didn't exactly make speaker sounds. Is this the same principle as that?? (If so, then my old apartment has some really well seasoned walls.) Oh, and if you run your guitar through an amp while it is seasoning, do the guitar's bridge pickups translate the same music/tones to the amp as if the guitar was being played?? Sorry so many questions!</p>

Yes. Same principle. Whatever you set the exciters on will turn that item into a speaker. Desk, wall, chunk of styrofoam, etc. It will cause that item to play whatever music you run through the system. Since I have no intention of using my guitar as a drum, cymbal or horn, I have a suite of solo acoustic steel string guitar music that I use.
So, in my case, the seasoning process sounds like someone is playing my guitar. And, for 72-hours straight, he's a guitar-playing fool who just can't get enough of it. The louder you play the music, the faster the guitar will season. From what the manufacturer and others have said, a brand-new guitar will show results after even 10-15 hours and will reach their maximum seasoning after about 70-100 hours. After that you're just wasting electricity. Along those lines, a new guitar will show more results than an old guitar. By that logic, this would be pretty useless on a torrefied guitar, whose wood is already seasoned by the torrefaction process.
Good question. I've never plugged my guitar into an amp while seasoning, so I couldn't say. I follow the manufacturer's recommended practice of slackening the strings while seasoning. Since the strings aren't under tension during this process, I'd say that the sound coming out of the amp would be weak, to non-existent. I'll try it today and let you know. |

I assume the Prime-Vibe only works on solid wood, not laminated. Correct?

I do play the banjo and I haven't heard any complaints as of yet. Of course, I haven't tried playing for 100 hours straight, either.
I might add that my use of this device on a guitar is barely tolerable to the household. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | By "barely tolerable", what do you mean? SWMBO's hearing is very poor, but I wake up when the guy 2 blocks away starts his Harley in the morning. I have a few guitars that could use seasoning, but I don't want to hear a loud hum for 100 hours straight. I could probably leave it on when I'm gone if it doesn't make too much noise to annoy my wife and turn it off when I get home. |

So you would be playing Andre Sergovia or Jeff Beck through you guitar top.
I was thinking of getting one for my 1537...
but I just played it and I think that it is as "open" as it is gonna get.
It is about 32 years old.

LOL! Imagine living next a club that plays late into the night. Now, imagine a club with a guitarist that plays the same 41 songs in order, 24 hours a day for 3 or 4 days straight. I do the seasoning out in the garage, but the volume is loud enough that we can here it inside the house. |

Volume isn't that great because the strings are slackened, so the top is vibrating the pickup through the bridge, but you can here the music coming from the amp. The next quesion was, 'what does it sound like?' So, I changed the strings on my 2077 from PB Lights to 80/20 extra lights and I like how it sounds a lot better.
By any chance does your decision to switch to very bright strings have anything to do with the cedar top of the guitar? My guess would be that cedar, elsewhere primarily used on classical guitars (?), gives the 50th-anniversary Ovation an overall dark voice, and in extreme circumstances can even tend to muffle string separation, though I doubt that being the case here with the clear projection the roundback provides.

Do you move the speakers around the face of the guitar, or pretty much leave them in one place?
It reminded me of a Player Piano - the guitar just sits there, and makes music, without you touching it! LOL!! It was neat to see when you lifted the little speaker, it really *was* the guitar being the big speaker!!

Not really. I just like the sound of 80/20s better on guitars that have larger-volume bodies, such as the deep and contour bowl Ovations. For medium bowls I like PBs. |

The location of the transducers is where the manufacturer recommends for flat top guitars. |

In a word, Wow! The sustain is markedly better as is the overall tone.
The LX X-brace and cedar top is an interesting combination. It's really easy to overdrive the cedar top with an aggressive attack. It's real strength is in fingerstyle. But, with a measure of restraint in strumming, it sounds fantastic.
I'm really pleased with this guitar and I'm very happy with how it sounds.

Interesting that the model number is stamped 2077 AV50E. Is the E for Europe? Maybe they are making 50 for the US and another 50 for Europe. Mark's is stamped 2077 AV50 3 of 50 and Jerome's is stamped 2077 AV50E 3 of 50.
Interesting question Dave and I had the same interrogation when I saw the number of mine. If I'm right, 100 of each will be produced so maybe 50 for USA and 50 for export "E"??? 2 series of 50 models??? Here's a pic of FD14 #1 "E"... J
Okay...so the serial number situation becomes a bit clearer with this... 
Looks like 50 for the USA, 50 for Europe and 50 for Asia with a grand total of 150 for each? Either way is cool for me, but some clarity might be in order at this point? |

I mean there are some people here with good relationships...is there no Information available from the MS or xraiderman?
