Location: Frozen Tundra of Minnesota | I am just watching this on the News, they broke in regular programming to announce it.
Same age as I am, 57.
He was always having concerts and pajama parties at Paisley Park, no booze, no drugs, no cell phones, you just came in your jammies, got in, and partied until the sun came up!
I know that he had a rough time growing up, I hope he is at Peace now. |

Location: Jet City | I realized when I posted this that most here were probably not very affected by the news, but I was a huge fan when I was younger. Bought Controversy and 1999 on their release days even.
I actually have a Prince playlist on my iTunes, with others like Morris Day, Apollonia, Vanity, etc added.
His music did much more to influence young Damon than any of the other Artists we've lost this year... including Bowie.
So I had to post something, even if it did only get a couple of looks and comments.
Happy Birthday Chris! You shoulda said something Saturday, we woulda partied just a little bit harder :D

Location: undisclosed | Whoa..... She sings? I always heard it was a musical family. I sat close to Sheila E and she made a lasting impression. In fact I spent most of the show watching her! I'd stop staring only to watch Prince play the guitar solos....
Hey Damon as long as you are a head hunter feel free to shop my strings skills to people like Nina, Sheila etc...... If I get my toe in the door, I'll make her talk to her old school chum.... And as long as I'm being realistic I better go get a lottery ticket  |

He was a Hometown Hero here, he played allot at First Avenue, so allot of us got to see him quite often in the Early Days. Heck of a nice guy, even though a little off the beaten path, very quiet, and had a genuine interest in helping others get a break.
And I LOVED Morris Day, I still have all of these guys on my ipod too! Last night thousands of people showed up at First Avenue, and had a Prince Dance Party out in the street, rain and all, until morning, playing his music. It looked like Times Square on New Years Eve! Hundreds were gathered at Paisley Park too, to just be there and share memories. The fence around Paisley Park is loaded with purple flowers and mementos, he was well loved here too. |

I'm with ya on this. There are other artists like David Bowie and Freddy Mercury who I've admired for their overall artistry and talent, but Prince was a guitar player too, and not "just" a guitar player, but an amazing guitar player. He also excelled on drums and piano and a bunch of other instruments, which is insane.
Then there's all the tunes he wrote where he didn't get liner credit. I did not learn of this until recently but apparently as a "song writer" for Sony they were able to use his songs for anyone in their catalog. He got paid of course, but no official credit, and it also prevented him from doing the songs himself.
Paisley Park did sound/music for commercials and movies as well. If anyone compiles a full discography, regardless of actual liner and scroll credits, it will likely have to be a large coffee table book, in small print, and single spaced.
Then there's the philanthropy and the other artists careers that he launched, nourished, or just helped out.
I'm the same age as well. Talk about live well, eat well, exercise, don't drink or do drugs... die anyway. If someone like Prince doesn't get to grow old... what chance do I have.

Wow, now I have to meet Dad and ask about his daughters, this is getting formal but I'm up for it.
Back to earth..... Thanks Damon! I kept quiet because it was loud enough!! that guy had his Vox set on ice pick behind me, talk about treble, lots of fun though and great to work with the sonic waves. Plus a certain girl did give me a big hug on my way out!! I have no shame.

Location: Jet City | Yeah, he was a one trick pony, but to be fair, it's my Vox. He may not have been getting the sound he was trying for.
I felt bad for Mel, his first night here and he was trying to play his mandolin with dude's electric guitar on full distortion.
I need Mel to come back often. He's part owners in one of my favorite wineries! They're releasing a cab this weekend, so I'll be seeing him tomorrow.

Location: Boise, Idaho | When Cavalier first mentioned his birthday, my first thought was, "I'm only 10 days older" (April 11), but the rest of this thread makes me feel much older. I was surprised that Prince was 57. Seems like he was around forever, but also seemed very youthful. We'll see what they say is the cause of death. Sometimes our number just comes up. As a friend said at a funeral a few years ago, "he was a person who lived life with no regrets." |

You could have acoustic themed sections of the jams.... at least I put away the Mandocaster and went back to violin so I wouldn't clobber him in the same pitch range with my grind. I actually used a clean tone on the mando often as it chimed through the mix when things got thick. |

Everyone knows the Sinead O'Connor "Nothing Compares" one, and all The Time, Vanity, Sheila E, etc stuff, but ther were HUGE mainstream hits written by him, many cross genre. 3 that come to mind... I've seen the word "opiates" being thrown around a couple times now but stories or all kinds (true, false or a little bit of each) can run rampant pretty easily these days. I'm sure we'll know more once the autopsy is completed.
I would be really surprised if it were an OD, he was really into healthy living, and exercise, keeping the mind and body clean. About a week ago, his private plane made an Emergency landing in Illinois, and then flew him straight back to Mayo here, he was only in for the one day, then showed up at a Concert that night, saying he was fine, he just had flu like symptoms is what the News said. 2 days later he is dead. I am betting it was his heart, it is not uncommon at this age, and can present with flu like symptoms. Just my humble opinion... I hope that it wasn't drugs... |

However, he did not seek treatment because he was a Jehovah Witness and his belief restricted blood transfusion and possibly other treatments such as anesthesia or immunization. It's very sad for sure, he must have been in big pain on stage for those last years.

I am saying this with the utmost respect; that man could perform high energy antics on-stage in stiletto heels like NO WOMAN I have ever seen in heels! Those can be tricky when you are just walking, and he was flying around like he was in tennis shoes!!! And for years and years, it is no surprise that his hips were shot. |

Location: Flahdaw | I heard that Prince did not drink alcohol. It's pretty hard to take enough Percocets to kill you at age 57 without mixing them with alcohol, unless his heart was completely shot. Yet he was reported to live a very healthy lifestyle. It'll really be interesting to hear the final outcome from the autopsy.

Location: Frozen Tundra of Minnesota | Sheila E and Prince's Family were out talking with the People around Paisley Park, hugging people and wanting to hear people's "Prince Stories". They were handing out purple boxes with a T-Shirt and posters/booklets/cd's, etc in them to people too. They have been very gracious and public with the Fans. It is amazing to see the range of ages that are there, from very young, to very vintage (I am being nice to the Old #arts like me).

And while allot of people like to see what is going on, and share their grief, I prefer mine private.
I was a fan, but not a Super Fan. The "All Night Prince Dance Parties" at First Avenue would have been fun though - they blocked off about 6 blocks, and the streets were filled with people dancing to Prince until 7 in the morning for 3 nights in a row. Thousands and Thousands of people. And get this, NOT ONE arrest or fight, that we heard of... Everyone danced, had fun, and went home very peacefully. I was very impressed with that happening now days.
To keep this guitar related, they interviewed the Luthier that built Prince's White and Gold guitars here. He made 3 of them for him, and they were made to Prince's precise instructions. And the Instructor from the Minnesota Dance Company that taught him and the Revolution to dance was interesting too - he said that he had never seen anyone work harder at getting something right, and that he and the band had just shown up, and said that they needed to learn how to dance (that had to have been a jaw-dropper for a Ballet Master!) |

I only knew her as a gray haired local talent. It was interesting to see pictures of her as part of the Revolution. She's aged well, but Prince didn't seem to. |

What I found interesting was in '95 he told his bandmates in an off-the-cuff way that all the hoopla with Warner Bros didn't matter because if this internet thing takes off the records industry will be dead and the people will be sharing music between computers and artists will be selling directly to the people and even giving away their music if they want. They (his bandmates) thought the train finally left the station with him standing on the platform. But.. here we are, and he called it. Guess he wasn't as nuts as they thought.
While the documentary kinda drags on... it kinda has to. He did so much and fought so hard for the art, and pioneered much of what we take for granted. The term "intellectual property" didn't really have meaning in music industry until he made it have meaning.
My favorite part of the doc is where they talk about "Most Beautiful Girl in the World" which Warner Bros let him release on his own label. They allowed it with the intention of teaching him a lesson that he needed them and he would loose all his money and come crawling back. Basically giving him enough rope to hang himself.... The Result... his first #1 in the UK and it was #1 in several other countries and #3 in the US. Oops. While I'm sure other artists about that time were starting to do their own releases of sorts.. This was pretty high profile and pretty much the proof-of-concept of what is commonplace today.
The more I dig into old interviews and press, the more of his genius comes out. In many ways, he was like a Zappa 2.0 Just amazing. |
