Hi all,

I recently purchased a 1619 Custom Legend on Ebay. Serial number puts it at 1982. It does not have a truss rod cover, but I don't see any screw holes for where one would have been attached. My first question is, did some of these custom legends not have a truss rod or truss rod cover? I have seen pictures of custom legends both with and without those covers.

Secondly, it has one non-original tuning knob. I was wondering if anyone had one for sale or knew of place to get one...maybe the Ovation factory?

I have attached a few pictures of the guitar.

Thanks,

John

Certainly not an expert on Custom Legends per se.. but with no truss rod cover it's most likely a K-bar truss rod. At least it is on other Ovations of that era (started in 1981, I think). Look/feel inside the sound hole up toward the end of the neck. That's where you will find the truss rod adjustment. On some you can see the actual bottom of the rod; while others have bracing in the way with a pilot hole in the bracing to guide a wrench. Not sure about the tuning knob.. but Arthur (or someone) will surely come along soon with an answer to that one. Hope this helps.

PS-- Congratulations on your acquisition. Nice guitar!

Thanks for the info! It is a wonderful sounding guitar, and I love the aged looking top...almost orange. That's what got me to buy it despite the tuning knob.

FYI, I just read the thread "Truss Rod vs. K Bar?? " which answered my first question.

I would still interested in finding a replacement tuning knob if anyone has info.

Thanks again!

They're probably Schaller tuning keys of some sort. I would try there first. Check the back of the headstock for the brand.

Looks like you may just need the bean...if you want the whole tuner, Check with AL or Mr. Ovation. That way you know you are getting an exact match. Then look towards ebay. A long shot would be calling Ovation. Typically those were Ovation, made by schaller.

Or find a set of beautimous beans and change them all. Be careful...and ask here if you go that route...not all beans fit those tuners.

Hi all, giving an update on this issue. I ended up purchasing a set of 6 Schaller pearloid knobs, large size (part number 3057) from StewMac. I also had to make a special request for them to send gold screws instead of the silver that they normally come with...in order to match the existing screws. At first I just replaced the one missing knob, but it stood out because it was so new, so I just changed them all. They look great!
