Location: Minden, Nebraska | Tony Williams and Allan Holdsworth teamed up for a while, advancing both of their careers by exposing them to a larger audience. This concert comes from the waning of such a heady era for 'fusion'. So many great talents, so much cross pollination, so little time before some of them died. Jaco's best playing was beyond brilliant.
I saw Mahavishnu Orchestra on their first American tour, and the band was amazing. I saw McLaughlin on tour a year or two later with his protege Devadip (aka Carlos Santana) doing an acoustic duo thing in tribute to their guru, Sri Chinmoy. It sucked, though there were some great guitar licks.
Chemistry... I'll probably have to buy this CD! |

Location: Chicago | Question: I had read that Jaco "misbehaved" during this gig, just goofing off doing his Hendrix-feedback schtick. A JM biography I have (Paul Stump) alleges that Tony W. had to be forcibly restrained from kicking his ass afterwards and that Tony and John were dead against the live gig being released. Maybe the studio material makes up for it? Or maybe the whole story is just a jazz legend? |

Maybe John decided it didn't sound so bad after all these years, it just wasn't what they expected at the time.
Jaco was an amazing bassist, but had some very troubled times at the end of his life. |

Working closely with sound engineer Marcus Wippersberg at Mediastarz Studio, Monaco, and mastering engineer Christoph Stickel at MSM Studios in Munich, McLaughlin was able to overcome the deficiencies of the Record Plant Mobile Recording facilities of 28 years ago. “Mixing this recording has been a real labor of love for me,” the guitarist says of TRIO OF DOOM, one of the most astounding aural documents of its time, and the only evidence of a supergroup who “more than lived up to their audacious band name,” as Milkowski concludes."

An awesome album. What was your favorite track, Schroeder? I think "Continuum (Live)" is just about the best thing happening on that album. But, I'll have to listen to it again (and again and again) to make sure. :D |

| Not decided yet - I love the first couple of minutes with the TW intro.
Went to see Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau last night - $90 ticket and worth every penny. Absolutely fantastic. I even bought the Tshirt.
He played the Pikasso guitar - more staggering in the flesh than the crappy YouTube videos would suggest. It makes the most amazing sound. Wonder what the Ovation QC department could do with 42 tuners? |
