I just bought a celebrity deluxe(its coming any day) and I was wondering if there is an easy way to paint or customize the tuning pegs? I think gold is kind of gaudy, and I would love to have black tuners. I was just wondering if in any way this was a possibility. thanks

You can replace just the buttons with black buttons or you could replace the tuners themselves with black tuners.

Here's one example:

Schaller Tuners from StewMac

You can also find them on Ebay or someone here probably has them as well.

A common problem. You probably didn't get here by going to ovationfanclub.com, so you don't have the green bar on the left. Go to the bottom of this page and click on "Ovation Fan Club" in the middle. That should get you the green bar and the links. It also shows Hosted by: Lost Art/Vintage Instruments, Al's company.
I assumed when you don't use capital letters you were an internet geek. Check out the rest of the site, like the vault and search functions, Member Access and all sorts of goodies, once you get that green bar.

The buttons are the part of the tuner that you put your fingers on to tighten or loosen the strings. It's held on to the tuner by a screw and can easily be replaced, as opposed to replacing the whole tuner.

Hey unbrok3npp; if your Celeb is a 6 string, then you need the large size. I think that Celebs use Ping tuners that are very similar to the Schallers on USA Ovations. The buttons are easy to fit; they are secured by a screw running through the body of the button into the shaft of the machine head itself. You can just see the hole for the screw top right on 3059 on Crimson Lake's post. I changed the gold buttons on my 90 Collectors to ebony ones in about 20 minutes. You just need a good screwdriver with a blade that fits the screwhead exactly to avoid marking or chewing the screw. They really make a difference to the look of the guitar. Try it!

Im thinking right now my best bet would be paint. Is this feasable?? Will painting the machines harm anything? is there special paint I should use? After I take the tuners out will they be easy to put back on? thanks!

Go to Walmart, in the Auto Parts Dept...
Get some BLACK black touch-up paint (in the little nail polish bottles)...
Clean the tuner buttons with Goof-Off, or maybe just alcohol...
Paint the suckers with THIN coats!

Or just try the Punk-Rock/Goth nail polish cuz you can get that off with nail polish remover if you don't like it.

I wanted to keep that question on top!

As to whether you should use more than one coat of paint... I'd use two or three coats. Then I would keep the bottle with me in my case.
But I'm guessing that the auto paint (or nail polish) should not come off unless you bump into something relatively hard. I mean, it sticks to automobiles with dust and bugs flying!
I would also look into just getting some buttons. As far as I can tell, they are held on with a teeny Phillip's screw...
Like these buttons [not necessarily THOSE buttons, but something like them]
Check your local guitar shop/store/mini-mart.
But since we are talking cosmetics here, I'd still go with the paint

thanks! I think I want to paint...because with a button the rest of the tuner is still gold...and I want all black. SO I think ill either get finshing paint or nail polish(whichever is cheaper) and do it that way. thanks for the help!!

and if anyone could tell me whether or not its hard to take out and reinstall the tuners that would be great! thanks

Well, if you are gonna do the whole thing...
I would get a little can of spray-paint, (and some blue masking tape) and use light coats for a smooth finish. Just mist it on, and wait... Repeat.
I would tape where the pin enters the mechanism, that will be covered by the wood of the head.
Also a very thin strip of blue tape where the knob axle goes into the other end of the mechanism... Covering that nylon gasket thingie.

As far as cost, Rustoleum is cheaper.
But auto paint... either one, small spray can or teeny touch-up brush-bottle, figure $5.

PS... If you destroy something, remember I am a novice also!

MAY I MAKE A SUGGESTION???

When you remove your gold tuners you will have a "footprint" on the wood on the back of the headstock. You may want to get the same Ping tuners in black as replacements so that the old footprint/screwholes are covered up nicely. These are used on the Elite T's, are available from the factory (to us in the club who have an open "back door"), and may be much less costly than anything else available.

I'd call John or Kim at the service dept. and ask.

I would NOT paint the gold tuners.

I'd give the painted tuners 2 string changes before the paint wore off and you'd see the gold. Probably not that many. Why am I reading and responding to this thread?

First try Al (moderator of this board, and seller of all sorts of Ovation stuff). Then try Kim Keller at Ovation. Email him at:

kkeller-kmc@kaman.com

You'll get exact replacements for the tuners on your guitar...except black.

Maybe I missed this someplace in the thread, but why don't you just buy some black buttons for the tuners you have?

". . i dont see anything wrong with paint . ."

Other than trying to get paint to adhere to electro-plated metal (and the resultant finish/durability), no.

Drilling small screw holes is no big deal and is a whole lot easier and faster than painting tuners, plus you'll end up with better tuners. I don't think the paint will work; I'll bet that they start flaking before the week is out.

But then agian, you don;t have much to lose. As Cliff said, have at it.

What stonebobbo said.

You can get black replacement schallers, or, I think, I said this before, get black planet waves auto-trims, they make 3x3's and can found on ebay for $40.00, $50 at the most. You will be happy with them, I guarantee it, and if they break in the first year, Daddario will replace them for nothing. (It happened to me, and I couldn't be happier with their customer service.) If there are holes, just fill it in with plastic wood.

Painting may look cheesy. Which is OK. Some people pay extra to have someone else make their guitars look old.
