Location: Buffalo,NY | I came home this past Thursday and siting by the door was a guitar box that had just arrived. Now I was expecting a Viper to be delivered on Friday but that was supposed to come to my office so I could sneak it into the house. So I figured either the guy shipped the guitar to the wrong address or I gave him my home address by mistake.
So my wife knew a big box came in that looked like a guitar box and I figured that I was in big trouble.
So I brought the guitar inside and my wife was right there as I open the guitar case and much to my surprise was an older Ovation Elte 1858 12string in natural. I didn't recall having bought or traded for one of these so I was able to plead for mercy. I truly couldn't figure out where this guitar came from.
So I tried to retrace all recent purchases and I couldn't account for this guitar so I figured that it was sent in error. That is why I was looking for Dave Plunk in an earlier thread. His name and music store were on the shipping documents.
I was actually able to find a picture of this guy and info on the music store through google. So Friday morning I called Dave and he was in amazement about the fact that the guitar was shipped to the wrong place. He told me he was even more amazed that I called to report this error and wanted to send it back to him ! I told him that it had never even crossed my mind to do anything else and that I would never put him in the position of having to account for a lost guitar(even though I don't know him). So we exchanged pleasantries and we agreed that he would figure out who the guitar was supposed to go . Then he would send me a shipping label to attached to the box and I would pack it back up and send it on to whomever it was supposed to go to.
Now before many of you start telling me that the guitar was supposed to ship it to you; I'm not buying it :D .
The guitar is very nice and has the OP-24 preamp in it. Does any one know what era of guitar that would place it in ? So I'll have this guitar over the weekend on loan until I can send it off to it's rightful owner.
By the way, it made sneaking the Viper into the house a lot easier.
Regards,
Tom |

Here is a print from the archives: "1858 Elite 1992-2001 USA Steel 12 Yes Shallow Elite PegHead A/E". BTW, what is the serial number? |

Location: Rego Park, NY, | I had a similar incident happen to me. I have an account with the Art Leather album company. At that time the main factory was located in Elmhurst,New York. My inlaws also lived in Elmhurst,New York. Even though they are in the same area they are on opposite ends of the town.
A photo studio from St Louis sent payment for albums to Art Leather with the right address but for some USPS reason they sent the envelope to my inlaws. The address numbers were not even close. I have been to the Art Leather factory many times to pick up my album orders and even became friendly with many people in customer service. So I drove to the factory and asked to see Bill who was an account supervisor. I handed the envelope to him and asked him to make sure that the photo studio would not have any late fees added to their payment. |

A very good question and I realized I hadn't addressed that( too long after my original post to edit).
I had bought something from them on April 28th , but they use a different name on ebay so I couldn't recognize the name or location because they give too general a location on ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=015&sspagename=STR...
So all will be well when the rightful owner gets their guitar.
Maybe I should include a note that tells them that their guitar was abducted by aliens but I was able to get it back !?

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada | I had the exact opposite happen to me. I had ordered a guitar from Al. The shipping label fell off in transit and the UPS guy apparently just dropped it off with another parcel at a location in Montreal, Quebec.
The really coincidental part was that that person was also expecting a guitar, one they had won in a contest of some kind!
Fortunately, Al had put all contact info on a paper inside the case and the honest person was able to contact me and make arrangements to have it picked up and re-delivered to me.
That story could definitely have had a much sadder ending.

the label did not fall off it was written on the box with your phone number the driver obviously did not read american only canadian and dropped it off at the wrong place.
I still cringe when I think about that one, it was a real close call |

I'm still trying to find the pronounciation difference between
'Sin Jawnz' in one province and 'San Jawn'.
(apparently one's in Nova Scotia, the other's in the province formerly known as Newfoundland. (NOOfunlan...I think) |

Nicely handled. You wouldn't want it any other way just as the rightful owner wouldn't want it done any differently than you did.
I'm interested in the end of this story!

Mark Mark,
I shipped it out today with the shipping label that was sent to me. That probably is the end of the story. I did pack it up much better than the store did. They don't know how to ship guitars very well.
I also agree that this was the only way this could go down; guitar in hands of rightful owner.

Apparently your genius extends to areas beyond guitars. That is an excellent idea and would certainly be up there with some of my best excuses for buying yet another one ! So if you don't mind I may borrow your line !

Location: Colorado | Mark in Boise, My comment was not directed at you. It is in response to this self serving thread in which Dr. Tom is seeking praise for being so honest. His story is simply not believable. And why did he take it out of the box? And why did he need to repack the guitar. And why does he need to ask for money from members when he obviously has plenty to spend on guitars and multi hundred dollar guitar straps which he photographs at his expensively landscaped large property. Why not just quietly just send a check, Give up one guitar, instead of asking for money from people who have much less, while boasting about all the new guitars he's getting. |

Location: Colorado | ...I have never done anything like this and I apologize for up front if this is in bad taste , against the rules, etc, etc.
Their is a guy living in Wisconsin(his name is Gary Bowen) who is selling off all of his guitars, mainly solid body Ovations to try and continue to make ends meet.He has had very serious medical problems that have left him with many tens of thousands of dollars of debt even after being forgiven an over $100,000 bill from his hospital. He is also now permanently disabled.
I have purchased a Deacon from him for $800 to help him out. This is not enough as he needs to keep selling all of his guitars.
I was wondering if I could ask every one so inclined to send this guy $1 or $2 if you were so inclined. This should hurt each of us too much and could really add up if many contributed. I do not know this person, but do know that he is in need and in desparate straits and he is a fellow Ovation lover.
If you would like to send the money directly to him I can get his address but he may be losing his home soon. If you like you could send it to me via paypal and I would send him a lump sum and I would absorb the paypal fees. I know this is a bit strange, but I feel compelled to help a fellow Ovation guitar lover out in his time of need. Let me know what you think or if you have any better ideas.
I apologize if this offends any one.
Regards,
Tom |

Location: CA | My wife once ordered a discount water ski (what people used to use for water recreation before wake boards). It was a discontinued model that was cheap to begin with. What arrived a week later on the doorstep was a top-of-the-line jobber with little fins on the fins, fer chrissakes, plus total high-end foot mount things and the most killer 'anaconda' paint job I've ever seen. She didn't think twice before packaging it up to send back (despite my tearful pleas on bended knees to eBay it and pocket the difference). As Doc mentions, the company was also flabbergasted at such honesty. Of course, if it hadn't have been way too big for her, I might have turned the tide. LOL. |
