So... here's the question...
When, if ever, did you spot "Heather" as a troll? |

There is opinion, and there is psychopathology.

My dayjob is secure.....I think. Wait, are you a psych[iatrist, ologist] for your dayjob? Which one is the one that can prescribe meds? Are you that one? We may need to talk.
Just kidding. I would think that observing the interaction between personalities on internet message boards would be fascinating (for certain values thereof) for a mental health professional. And that's without even considering that the personalities presented are likely to be affected. Or, not...maybe 'internet personae' are what's really under the mask for some people. Hrmm...I wonder if anyone has done any research on this.
I'm sorry, I got off topic there...first four posts. The screen name gave it away. |

I'm certainly not trying to perpetuate the recent example here but I think it's a good idea to learn from others how to spot a troll post. Heck, I've been drawn to that porch light a time or two myself. At least if you recognize the situation you can pile on knowing what you're in for.
Did that first (and only) post by GuitarUSA1 seem strange to anyone else? It's certainly not a typical, "hello, how are ya", type of first post. I sensed pretty quick that it was some type of marketing effort. And a poor attempt at that.
I gave "Heather" a typical "welcome aboard" post but something did hot feel right. "She" was just a little to "Up With People" and too open for someone who is really trying to join in.
I'm not meaning to beat a dead horse here or to preach to the choir. It took me a while to learn to spot the signs and I figured if we talked about it others might learn to pick up on it quicker that I did. Then... maybe... hopefully.. the OFC will not be such an easy target for the likes of "Heather".
Personally I really, really, really hate attempts to manipulate me into something. Whether its an item for sale, an opinion, or an emotion, if I can learn to sense it, I can learn to resist it. |

| Maybe that first post by 'Jack Williams' from Fresno was some kind of set-up to hype Jordan Rivers and 'heather' came along to stir the pot, although she had posted 35 times before then.
She seemed to get overly sensitive in a hurry...but it was funny while it lasted. |

Ringer? Shill? Like one trolls for fish? Stringin' us along? It's just that I've never really heard it applied anywhere else outside of the Brothers Grimm, that's all (although that whole episode was grim enough.....)
Thank you for helping the auld Gramma out,

| Maybe jack was the troll and heather was the bait? But, I've heard the word 'troll' just used as a simple insult, nothing more...I'm still scratchin' my head over this one...not really sure. |

Well, there is vulgar and then there is VULGAR. I was thinking about this as walked my dog this AM. When she stops to relieve herself, her tail points up or it points down, and you can tell just what kind of relief she's going to be getting. Let's keep our tails up, at least.

Somewhere in the middle of the Richard Jordon thread It should read "Jordon Rivers", but no matter.... I think everyone gets the refference. |

That's been true of so many people I've met in life and and some people right here on this board. They seem like perfectly fine people when sailing in calm waters. When the seas get choppy, either self induced or baited on my wise crackers like myself, true colors come forth. I won't name names, but you know some of the past characters on this board when went from playfully splashing in the OFC pool to pissing in it just to ruin it for everyone else. They're gone and we're still here, that's all you gotta know.

It's funny how trolls always start out early attacking other peoples guitar playing. If guitar playing is straight competition - where is the fun in that? And one persons "guitar hero" is somebody elses "noisy irritating bastard". For example, Joe Satriani...
Heather wasn't as entertaining as Hal Jordan. And anybody who uses 48dd as part of their screen name is probably a dude. :D |

For those that don't get it... It's called marketing. You're an artist, you either hire professionals or you get your friends to log onto every board remotely relating to your art to post a link to your website. Doesn't matter what is said, doesn't matter how it's said, as long as it's spelled correctly.
