Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Neat pic. You'd think some Roadie could have either removed the piece of tape with Cash's name from the guitar top, or otherwise affix it to a less conspicuous location. |

Location: SoCal | Pretty certain that it was a guitar provided to him at that venue. He only played Martins the last 40 years of his life....
But it is a cool pic. |

But it is a cool pic. I seen one that he played at the Country Music Hall of Fame. It was pretty beat up.
Sorry it is not a better picture. |

What's the upside-down piece of tape?

Location: Nashville TN. | Johnny MOSTLY played Martins.
He had 100s of guitars over his life time.
Most of his recording was done with a Martin D-28 D-35 ang his Signature D-42.
On stage live is another issue.
He used the late 1960s Fender Kingsman & Newporter. Martin Refused to make him a black guitar.
In Early 80s his stage guitar was Guild D-60 sunburst. The Ovation Elite and Takimine Dreadnought in the early 90s.
FRETS MAGAZINE March 1989 he gave
and interview where he explained he sometimes needs a change in what guitar he plays. |

Location: Nashville TN. | Martin just refused to make a black guitar.
It was not something they do.
Something about tradition.
Until his Signature model came out in the late 90s was the first black guitar they made.
Johnny tried spray paint a D-28 black.
Just pealed off. Since he was on CBS records, the got him Fenders. (CBS owned fender at the time)
Johnny was hard on Guitars and wore many out.
At one point he was using heavy gauge strings .14's then switched down to 13's.
Kieth Richrads and Little Richard were on the other 1/2 of a picture. |

Location: Nashville TN. | If the venue provided the guitar (somewhere I have another picture of playing an Elite somewhere else.)
Anyway, when the venue provides an instriment
normally the rental through the sound company.
The contract will state exactly what instrument thats to be provided and the exact strings and gauge to be on it. If he wanted a Martin he would be playing one in the picture.
Here stash Music contracts

btw
Willie Nelson requires a smoke free venue.....
ya that doesn't include "his" type of smoke. |

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada | I own a (Black) Martin J-40MBK which was a regular production model built from the late 80's to early 90's. Amy Ray in the Indigo Girls has played one for years. Martin offers black as a routine option in the custom shop now and actually has for quite a few years, 'cause I considered that before I purchased the J-40MBK in 1990.
Regarding the picture, I am surprised that no one has mentioned the famous guitar player on the right with the white Les Paul. Dave Evans, The Edge. |
