I think there is a trend on the horizon.
Perhaps, maybe, and thank God.... rap might be reaching the end of it's welcome. The only thing that will put the last nail in that coffin is the emergence of something else.
At lunch I heard two new releases by a group called "Tesla". One was Zepplin's "Thank You" and the other was the Beatles' "I Got A Feeling". Both were faithful enough to the original, yet had a fresh spin to them. Maybe there is finally enough time / distance from "Classic Rock" to the point where the young bands can mine some of that material. Heck... it might be to the point where the typical 20 year old is not familiar with much of Zepplin's tunes. The band that records it will have to pay the percentage to the orginal writer (or their heirs), but they know they'll have a proven commodity to start with.
Now I don't think we'll see anything to rival the golden years. The business end of the industry has changed to much. But it I think that kind of trend would be welcomed. |

Of course they might have a new release.
And I agree with you Brad, maybe rap is nearing the end of its run. It has been around about as long as any musical style lasts. |

Is it time for the next tour yet??? |

Location: Rego Park, NY, | I don't like most of the music my kids are listening to. Mostly rap/hiphop. I really would like to see their faces when they listen for the first time in about 15 years to the music that they were listening to today. I hope the expressions on their faces and in the thoughts in their minds show "What The F@ck was I thinking when I bought and listened to this music". |

And I still say,
(get one idea and beat it to death, I say.)
Rap fulfills the first law of Rock 'n' Roll.
Piss off your parents
If they think it's music, it's not YOUR music!
You call that boom, boom, boom crap music?

(I'm still not much of a fan...but my late Father-in-law gave me a collection of Sinatra when he was a skinny kid in Big Bands during the war. He even sounds 4f!) |

The Police (unofficially) DISBANDED in 1984.
So it was only a couple years ago, right?
Apparently they kicked butt and exhumed memories last night in Vancouver. |

This weekend Me&Mrs. made a run through the local "Levitz", an upscale furnishings emporium. I did not come out unscathed. I also noted that I hadn't heard Doris Day, Frank Sinatra or Dinah Shore in a very long time. Not awful, just wouldn't want to be stuck there day after day! |

Covers from Zepplin, Beatles, Deep Purple, Guess Who, Uriah Heep, Traffic, James Gang and a bunch more I don't remember.
and you are right....very good and fresh versions that respect the originals.
Remember their cover version of "Signs" about 5-10 years ago? |

Side note: The Smithereens released an album earlier this year called "Meet The Smithereens", and yup, it is a cover of the Meet The Beatles album. Song for song. Interesting ... it's the Beatles but it's the Smithereens. |

| I heard Snoop Doggy Dog was going to cover an old Captain Beefheart tune but he couldn't stand the noise and the foul language. |

Location: Hicksville, NY | I didn't know that they'd been around since 1984?? Wow ... I guess now I know. I'd been listening to Tesla since my college days in the late 80s. When I first heard "Heaven's Trail" on the radio, it was enough to prompt me to purchase their "Great Radio Controversy" CD. Other tracks from the album include The Way It Is, and Love Song, and I still have that CD. Their acoustic cover of "Signs" from their Five Man Acoustical Jam album is still one the songs that I still enjoy listening to this day.
I saw the Smithereens at the college field house as back in 91 ... it was great show! Their song "Girl Like You" was played on the airwaves so many times that I got sick and tired of it. |

Here's what they looked like back-in-the-day with a more uptempo tune, Absolutely Right.
Their tortured history belies the talent, quality, and volume of work these guys did in their day. Lead songwriter Les Emmerson also did a couple of the finest little pop ditties ever on his own including Cry Yours Eyes Out. |
