Hi all,

Today I received from overseas my first Ovation guitar, nice sound, nice appearance.
There is something weird about the top though. Between the bridge and the rear end the wood has a wavy appearance... not only you can see it, but it's possible to feel it with the fingertips (slightly). It is as if the top is made from several pieces of wood rather than one. The "lines" run parallel with the strings and the most visible one is exactly in the middle. I can't see what's the problem because of the black varnish on top.
Is this something normal?

Is the "wavyness" like every inch or so, or multiple lines per inch?

If it's multiple per inch, it could just be that you are feeling the grain of the wood thru the thin finish.

If it's every inch or so, you're probably feeling where the top is braced.

Make sure it spends a few days in a humidity between 40% and 60% and see if the waves go away.. it may just be dry from shipping.

it is probably from drying out slightly during transport. give it up to 3 days and you will most likely see the waviness decrease and go away.

edit: sorry for the redundancy, dvd beat me to it.

Thank all of you for the lightning speed reply:)

The pattern is like this: two lines are about 1/2 inch apart, then there is a gap of say 2 inches, then another two lines... I hope you are all right and there's only the humidity problem...

P.S. If I manage to get a good shot I will snap a photo & upload

That link is an A brace, I don't think Balladeers had that.

the LX's have scalloped X bracing, but the non-LX 1861's are listed as A-braced

Sure they did.

Caveate (sp?): I had an '82 CL 12...finest guitar I've ever had. It had A-bracing. From the day I got it 'till the day it burned up in our house fire, the braces telegraphed through the top so it was a bit wavy below the bridge. Kim assured me it wasn't a defect...just happens sometimes. Never caused a problem for me, always sounded like a dream, and I miss it dearly.

So...maybe for you it might wind up the same. If not great! If so just enjoy it. It won't develop into a problem. John <>{
