Ovation Jumbo Acoustic

Can anyone tell me anything about this beast? What model is it? When were they made? Where were they made? What do they sound like?

Edit;Oh wow, I just noticed it's in my old home town.

There was another thread about this one. I think Bill said it was indeed a "jumbo". I've never heard of one either.

$200Aus is about $180Cdn.
I'm more the bottom feeder type and know little about Ovations...when you get right down to it...
but I'd consider it a heck of a bargain up to....
$250Cdn...$275Aus.

Can anyone in 'your old home town' look at the guitar for you?

(I don't get the discription about not being very loud. A deep bowl guitar, set up properly, should just boom!....?cracked or unglued ribs?)

I bought my Custom Balladeer new in ...um 1975? (good decade!) and it's still my favourite, play-it-first guitar. (Of course, I only have 5 so it's not that big a choice....)

There is no such thing as a jumbo. Somebody was wanting one and I was winding him up. There was only one body shape until the parlor.

Oh, that helps. :)

This is probably NOT the best weekend to get anything resembling a serious or accurate response from Connecticut, eh? ;)

muzza,
as brainslag says in his post on the sell/trade forum, it is probably an 1111-4 balladeer.

I used to own a 1111. It wasn't a jumbo, but a normally proportioned O.

The photo must be an optical illusion, coz the neck seems really short in relation to the body.

I'll get my mate in Wollongong to go check it out and get back to you.

I hardly ever go to the sell/trade forum, for obvious reasons.

Muzza..I didn't know you were from Wollongong. I'm originally from Newcastle.Did you ever work at BHP down there. I spent ten years in the blast furnace at Newcastle.

BTW..are you thinking about bidding on this guitar?

I did my electrical apprenticeship at what used to be AIS in Port Kembla, affectionately known as 'the steel works'. I wasn't in one area for more than a year, except the coke ovens - I was in that hell hole for 2 years.

Our similarities are spooky, Oz.

And no, I had no intention of bidding. If it was something special, like a real JUMBO (if they existed) I may have been interested. I still haven't told SWMBO about my last Ovation purchase. I'm well known on this forum for my fear of my 'other half'.

And if we ever meet, which is highly likely, YOU DON'T TELL HER NOTHIN'!

I actually wondered why they never attemped a super jumbo with top dementions similar to Gibsons SJ-200.
A lot of those Gibsons are disappointing in thier
in sound. I was shocked how many of those turn up used. I would think deep countour with a massive top would really really blow other Jumbos out of the water.

The engineering and development costs to come up with the molds for the bowl would be huge. I think I heard during a factory tour a couple of years back that the costs for new molds are into six figures.

Wow I didn't think it would cost that much!
Once developed it might pay off in the long run.

No. They have to build the bowl for my Upright Double 'O' Bass first!

Imagine the rumble!

What?!?!?! I serious!

The world needs more upright bass and an Ovation
would likely be less expensive than MOST current options, be louder and tougher, and be lighter.

Imagine, a world full of slap bass in the dance hall! Bowed bass on the ballads....I think I'm gonna weep, just a little. It's too beautiful.

I saw a show on TV a while back about a company building cello's completely out of carbon fibre, (I think it was Louis & Clarke). Maybe you could track them down to build your custom stand-up bass?

The company is Luis and Clark.
I told my nephew about this company a while back. He's waiting for the Bass version. I believe I heard about them on this board.

Here's the link

If you read their (luis and Clark's) copy, you find their reasoning follows the lines of: Form following function, consistency of materials/product, use of contemporary materials, results oriented design without overarching concern for tradition (other than the music).

Sound familiar.

Oddly, there is not a lot of pushback from peers. I believe there are a couple of these instruments in the National Symphony (nephew's gig). There are certainly A number of them around in various big time orchestras around the US.
