Both Crosby/Stills/Nash & Jefferson Airplane seemed to have recorded it at the same time.
I personally like the version by Jefferson Airplane alot better. GWB |

Here is one synopsis of their creation process. |

Great song! ...and fun to play. ....especially those Crosby 2 and 3 note fragments way up the neck. Play it on a 12-string and it makes you sound like a genius! |

What did we ever do without You Tube??
How cool it it to start with a link to an obsure live version of Wooden Ships then just look over to the list on the right and watch Down By The River and others? |

Location: NJ | I saw that same tour in '77. Stills used a wireless on his FireBird, and that was the first time I ever saw one. This was right after the the black "CSN" album came out, and they were DEFinitely at the top of their respective games.
I don't think that's a Hurricane on Crosby.
Maybe a Guild??
From the booklet inside of Crosby's "Voyage" box set:
Kantner originally didn't get writing credits, because he was being sued by his managers at the time.
"If you smile at me, I will understand, so on & so forth . . . . . ." came off of a sign in front of a Baptist church in Florida near where Cros had the "Mayan" docked.
"Silver People on the shoreline . . ." are people in radiation suits (in keeping with the whole Nuclear Annihilation/ScienceFiction-thing). |

I always imagined that song taking place sometime in the past rather than the future.
Guess I won't be doing that anymore. |
