Location: Madison, WI | will hold either my shallow-bowl Ovation OR my Fender strat safely. Not at the same time, of course. The smaller it folds up the better, I will be putting it in my gig bag, my carryon bag, or if I can find a hollow spot in my Ovation case (but that's a question for another time!)
Guitar Center has these:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...and?sku=454318
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...and?sku=456510
This one:
http://rksguitars.com/new/accessories/gigstand.php
And these ones:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...nd-?sku=454506
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...nd-?sku=454511
The first two, the fretrest . . . it was a nice, sturdy stand that folded up small, but the Ovation wouldnt fit in the electric version. The acoustic version was designed for a large dreadnought and both guitars fit with room to spare-- not snug.
The gigstand was very flimsy with the Ovation, I didnt try it with the Strat.
The Fender stands folded up the smallest but they werent quite as sturdy as the FretRests. The electric one fit both the strat and, very very snugly, the Ovation. I didnt try the acoustic one.
Recommendations? I'm also debating whether it wouldnt be better to simply get two stands, one for each guitar. If I could fit a stand into the Ovation's case I would DEFINITELY go for it. |

I've had them for three years and they have held-up just fine. I haven't seen one that folds smaller. |

Hercules Stands Single Guitar Stand with Folding Yoke
Product #453081
these are great. I have ovation & electric and they work for either. They are fully adjustable and can even be used for a bass. Very Sturdy and do not tip easily. |

The Fender will fold up smaller but the Hercules will hold your guitar better.
Just using your case will also provide protection. |

Location: Madison, WI | The problem with the linked stand, and regarding what Jeff mentioned, stands with neck rests wont fold up small enough. I need something that can either fit in my case/gig bag or in the carry-on bag I use to hold by pedalboard (18x11" if I recall correctly). |

I couldn't find the dimensions. Oh well...
Konig & Meyer E-stand
Or the A-version
These look like they might be less than 18 inches.
Now that you know the brand names,
you might be able to get them quicker in a brick & mortar store.
Don't know your travel plans.
Personally, I would just get a regular folding stand and bungee cord it around your case. |

That being said, I've used the Fenders, acoustic and electric, for about 5 years now and they have held up very well and work as well as any folding stand could. I have an old Orvis briefcase that I use as a gigbag and I can fit 3 of 'em in one of the interior compartments and still have room left in that compartment. The electric stand can hold all the electrics in my sig line, except the 137. The acoustic stand can hold the 137, the Martin and any of the O's. |

Wil and Mark, the Fender ones you tried, did you put your Ovation in the acoustic version, or the electric? |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I have five of the Fender stands, both electric and acoustic size. The electrics are a bit tight for the Viper EA-68, but workable. I carry one of each in my gig bag just so I don't forget to change them out depending on what guitar I'm using. Size was my first consideration when I bought these, and because they were on sale at GC for less than $10 each, I bought five. I have no issues with stability, but our stage rarely has anybody walking around other then the musicians and they're all careful not to knock something over. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | The first Fender stand was for the daughter with an Ibanez Artcore acoustic. It wouldn't begin to fit in the electric version. The second has a mid bowl Ovation, which might squeeze into the electric version, but I wouldn't risk it. So both were the acoustic versions. |

Since I have 12 O's (the most of any brand), I would like to be able to take a pic of all of them together (hence 12 stands). There has to be doctors for this kinda insanity.

Location: Madison, WI | I ended up getting the two Proline stands, one electric and one acoustic. They dont fold up quite small enough, but they are much sturdier than the Fender's. It actually wasnt my decision, there was a woman involved, I would have got the Fenders. But they are much nicer stands. |

Hercules mini guitar stands
I just ordered an acoustic TravLite model... it doesn't fold down as compactly as some others, but it seems like it may be more stable.
Figured it was worth a try for less than $14. |

| Does anyone have any comments on the Ultimate Genesis stands? Like if they are well worth some extra bucks (even though they aren't portable) or will any guitar stand really do as long as it holds the guitar? |

Location: Buffalo,NY | We used some of these Ultimate stands last night at our gig. They were just excellent and they fold up to 21". Maybe too big to travel with but they will hold any size or shape guitar with great stability. Theye are not cheap but then , neither are your guitars. I think I'm going to get more of them:
Here's my Balladeer on the stand.I don't have the locking strap in place but it goes right across the headstock near the nut and hold the guitar firmly in place:

I have 4 of the Fender stands: 2 acoustic and 2 electric: I have used many others in the past and these so far have been great: Short of someone hitting the guitar and knocking it from the stand (which would take a pretty good hit), these Fender stands are very sturdy and fold up very compactly; and they have their own little carrying bag; I really like them!
Blessings! |

| Thanks Tom for the pictures and the comments on the Ultimate Genesis. I think I might get one of these stands. I just want a good stand for my good guitar=) Dont want my guitar falling over because of a cheap guitar stand..don't know if it is that much of a problem because i haven't used guitar stands too much in a home setting..but i guess better safe than sorry. |

Collapsible/portable, and EXTREMELY stable.
I've got one on the tabletop in my MusicRoom for re-stringing, and I have two in my StandBag to augment my DoubleHercules stand whenever I bring 3-4 guitars to a gig . . . |

| ive got one quick question that hopefully one of you can answer about the Ultimate Genesis stands. I see that they hold the guitar by the headstock and that nothing supports the bottom. I'm sure that is fine, but does the back of the guitar bang against the metal stand when you put it down? Does that mean you have to be ever so gentle every time you put the guitar on the stand? |

Location: Orange County, California | The front legs have "foamies" on them, so no worries about banging up the back of your guitar. I lower the head on mine until the end pin is only a couple inches off the floor. This seems to let the stand "cradle" the bowl a little deeper, and adds even more stability.
After using one of these, I'm really un-easy about any other regular stand. If only the head flipped over on the Hercules 414..... |

I see you have a Viper and a Preacher; how does the sound of one compare to the other?

Location: Marlton, NJ | Tom - to be honest, the last time I played the Preacher was about 20 years ago. It is stripped and in pieces in the basement. I bought it when I was a teenager and changed out the PUPS pretty soon after. That should give an indication as to what I thought about the sound back then. I have since located original PUPS (the reason I joined this board in the first place) and then some.
The Viper is also in parts. I purchased that from Craigslist last year also with thoughts of restoring it. It did not have original PUPS either. I have also located those.
Yes... My name is Mike and I am a procrastinator!
I will however give a full report once both are in playable condition.
The stand works just fine for electrics:

Anyone have this type of work trip?
