That little piece of koa at the base of the neck heel is an inspired feature.

Where the heck is the classic skunk stripe???
Perhaps it would not go with the starkness of that fantastic ebony fretboard. |

Here's a little sound sample. Acoustic only. Just popped a mic in front of the guitar, VERY rough. One take and plenty of mistakes but it'll give you an idea. The recording does not come close to capturing how nice this guitar really sounds.

i know they do not make wood-topped "adamas" branded guitars, but this one would appeal to me even more if it said "adamas" on it. |

Then they short changed the neck...missing two frets to the body? Dave you need to check these guitars out more carefully before you commit.
And the headstock is full of holes!!!Whoa! And did they ever screw up the sound hole placement...not even close to center. Man, you got took.
I must admit that it does sound really good though.
Nope I can't like it. Not me. No way. Not a chance. Forget it.
That's right, I just can't "afford" to like that guitar! :)
Nice, Dave!

Nice,Dave I gotta agree on that one!
One of the first things I noticed was the Binding, (regardless of whether that affects the sound) I like it. And the sound aperture placement is kinda nifty also. (Nifty is another technical term)
That will definitely draw some compliments...

I'm sure you're right Dave.
But here's a thought for somthing down the line... how about the light maple neck with dark mohogany as the skunk stripes. Kinda the reverse of what we are used to seeing |

Oh well..... nope it would not have. yes the look is unique but the majority of people want 14 fret guitars not 12.
the unique sound hole is a stretch for Ovation. This could also ruffle the suits. |

Mine said the OFC guitar has to be the last for a year or two. My translation: A year from when I started thinking about it. By the time I get it, the time will be up! Three years of law school and 30 years of practice has to be good for something. I don't handle divorces, though, so don't blame me if my advice screws up your marriage. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I have to agree with Al. This guitar is very unique by Ovation standards. That's one of the things that appeals to use here on this board because we've pretty much got all the standard stuff already (or at least have had it at one point and moved on).
It's a stretch for any Guitar Center shopper to buy any Ovation model at all. So what's the chances of someone off the street laying out two grand to take a chance on non standard sound hole placement, non standard wood (koa), non standard neck (12 fret 1-3/4 wide), non standard back (plastic), ... Ain't gonna happen.
Guitars like this are best left to eclectic dealers (such as Lost Art Vintage), and passionate ovation homos like us.
I played around with the VIP electronics this morning. Very cool stuff. I doubt I'll ever have a need to use it, but that's true of a whole lot of stuff that I own. This has been said ad naseum but I'll go on record again - HAVING TO PLUG SOMETHING IN THE JACK JUST TO USE THE @UCKING TUNER IS THE STUPIDEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN - DUMB, DUMB, DUMB. It would be like having a BIC cigarette lighter that only works if you plug it into an A/C outlet.
But even with the stupid tuner, this is definately one of the nicest wood topped Ovation guitar I have ever played. It's right up there with the FD14 and a few select others.

Although I can't keep up with all the threads which go flying by so quickly, my eyes caught this one for sure.
I am extremely pleased to see these guitars coming through now. It really makes my day, and I am delighted and grateful to all involved with this model. I don't know of another company who would do what kaman is doing for us. Thanks Al and all the people at the factory who made this guitar possible. To me, the affordable 12 fret cutaway is all that counts--not the marketing. |

And in regard to the comments about the sound hole, I seem to remember a number of people from 2 years ago comparing it unfavorably with the McPherson soundhole.
Whatever happened to the prototype? |

Does this mean the sunburst, wide-neck, slothead, Custom Legend is now surplus to requirements? I am seriously first in line if it is..

I thought the 12 fretter with the inlaid maple might be the right combination at the time. |

I thought about it.
they don't have to get all the cool stuff.
Why can;t I get cool stuff for people in the states?
so
Adamas slothead OFC
U681T 12
Koa LAV

I think Darrin has the proto but I am not sure. |

[/QB] Al, what a wise decision! And you make two guys in the old world very happy with it as well.
So keep on thinking about those real collector's editions.
By the way - great looking guitar!

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Thanks, Al, for making this guitar possible. It is really unique and employes a variety of features not typically found combined in a single model. The looks are to die for. I can hardly wait to try mine with the band. This will be one they haven't seen before. Because I have been trying out different models at band practice, the bass player now has his own bad case of G.A.S. and has recently picked up two new basses and has a third on order. I guess I wasn't convinced that G.A.S. is contagious, but it is and there is no cure! All we can do is hide it awhile with a band aid, but the dressing has to be changed, sometimes quite frequently. |

"Nice Ovation. To those that don't like it. Tell them not to play it."
"Nice Koa, never been too crazy about Ovations but yours rock!"
"The Ovations have never been comfortable for me (my front is too round for their round backs) but that is one gorgeous instrument."
"That headstock is tasty as well."
"Beautiful instrument! That's one Ovation I would like to try, though I'm still holding to my traditional 'not my cup of tea' line. Others like them just fine, and I certainly won't quibble. We all have our own tastes, and a special guitar like this might just cause me to change my mind."

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Thanks to Tupp and Al, those attending the reunion had the good fortune to admire and play not one, but four of these models. Tupp brought Number 1 and Al picked up Numbers 3, 4 and 5 from the factory en route to the hotel. There was a substantial buzz throughout the lobby about the senational looks of these guitars. No. 3 appears to have a quilted finish in addition to the vivid multi-colored stripes of the heavily figured Koa. Based on looks, these models are true collector pieces. During the tour, Rick Hall lifted up a Koa top bowl sitting on a shelf and made reference to it being one of Al's "special creations", then added how rare they were because the factory just doesn't do much one-off stuff in such wild Koa. |
