I'm sure this has been done before, but for the benifit of those of us who don't know the whereabouts of THE ORIGINAL SLOTHEAD ADAMAS' and their owners, should make for some very interesting reading.

Also, in order to establish the pedigree for each instrument please do tell how you aquired the instrument, and any other related facts.

Pictures and links would also be nice.
Thanks in advance for sharing...phil

"How I came to own Slothed #0045"
By Colin Holloway

This was Jan. 1990 in Red Bank, N.J.
While shopping for a Balladeer or Legend I spied a blue roundback hanging on the wall with all the other used guitars. After taking it down and admiring the carved walnut and gold glitter on the top I knew I had to have it, even tho the 1st 3 frets had been cut-thru by the strings.

Phoned the Factory to ask if they could do a fret job. The lady asked for the S/N and replied "YOU'VE GOT THE 45th ADAMAS EVER MADE???". Until I joined the bunch here I thought it was just a low S/N Adamas.

This is sad, but true... since then, it has spent most of its life with me in its case, in a closet.

Link to Jerome's FANTASTIC site for pics of #0045

THE END
hope we're not getting graded on this...

Bought #45 ? (can't remember)last year off of ebay just to screw with Standing Ovation.

Once I finally received the guitar, I took it to factory to get the tuners replaced (yes i still have the originals)and picked it up 8 months later. drove it in the front seat to colorado last fall.
I love my 1187-47, and I do think the world of the newer slotheads, I mean they are righteous sounding in the right hands (which does not include my playing). But the sound from the original slotheads speaks for itself. I am not disappointed at all in buying the original slothead. And i would do it again, if Dave was not bidding...

Did I even answer the question?

Gotta meet you someday Fugot...I'm all the way down in Broomfield.

Here is my part of the story of #43. I can hear and see Cliff rolling his eyes on this one already - since he has heard this fish story before...he even documented part of the story from the mothership in another thread a year and half ago. I still can't believe what the oscilloscope showed all of us. Here is a link to pics from Jerome's page...thanks Jerome

http://www.ovationtribute.com/Adamas_Slotheads/Adamas_Original_Slot...

In 1986 I was a staff member on the road with Up With People..yes the old peace niks...I was playing a Glen Campbell model...wanted something else...I had seen the 1537 Glen Campbell played when he was with the Band Caledonia....I had a few days off the road - drove over to Atlanta - to find a 1537. No one (about 6 stores) had one in natural... I saw nuttin but black ones...I was bummed..I went to American Music in Smyrna - they didn't have one either - but in the front corner was this Adamas - the salesperson said - play that one...I did..I liked the sound - I said to everyone around I had never played an Ovation which sounded like a dreadnaught guitar - until this one. I bought it....for its sound - not its rarity. I knew it was one of the originals - but didn't really think about it...it was - and really still is...a tool (albeit a nice tool.) Along the way I transitioned from road playing to pit work (I know - it's bad - I actually can read music and TAB)- the old stereo electronics were a pain - so I sent it to the factory and had an OP-24 put in it. Tim Kummer politely referred to me as Joey Mengele for that one...but it actually far improved the flexibility, noise levels. and overall electronic sound. The OP-24 is still my favorite preamp Ovation has made. Fast forward to a year and a half ago...the slothead reunion happened - and between Darrin and CWK2, it was determined to be #43 - based on the origianl pencil numbering of internal parts and the top...see pics. I have documentation from the seller it passed through the hands of Nancy Wilson...then it went back to the factory for some reason - they sent her another...and this one wended it's way to me. CWK2 and Kummer even claimed to have owned it at some point. Official documentation shows Nancy with #44...she says she actually has had two. CWK2 and others doubt Nancy ever had it. Bill's fillin station attendant/guitar builder friend disagrees - saying these orginals came in and out of the factory sometimes. The production documentation shows 4 months separation between #43 and #44. If you watch different cuts on YouTube - you can see some subtle differences in the epaulats on a couple of the videos of Nancy W. playing the slotheads. I say she had two...we'll probably never know - but it adds nicely to the mystery. At the reunion, Darren put up a wave form of the typical slothead....then put up a typical waveform of a dreadnaught...I'll be darned if mine didn't look like a dreadnaught with the double (bimodal) waveform peaks....I believe Cliff called it pretty weird... I guess my ears were pretty well- tuned back in Smyrna.

The details....Slothead number 43, I purchased it from American Music in Smyrna, Georgia, I paid $1,250.00 at the time. I cannot prove this - but I would suggest this particular slothead had been played more than any other one (at least professionally). It did shows 28 days a month from 1986 to 1993 - then pit work to the present - albeit now I am a HS principal - so even the pit work stays on the back burner now. The guitar has held up very well. Oddly by meeting CWK2, he also introduced me to other outstanding guitars - and I use them for work as well. I have played the 47-reissues - and they are great...I'd say they acoustically sound better than my original...but this one was made in 1976! Whew...hey thanks for posting the pic Cliff...I'll pay you for copy!

This might be a stupid question.

Is the frequency resonance (99) on #47 the reason it is the "best of the best"?

Has the frequency resonance been documented on the "47 reissues?

Pardon my ignorance

Going back thru this thread, it's interesting to read the stories of the aquiring of the original slotheads. I know where one of them is that isn't listed here (for whatever reason, the owner hasn't made public that information). Any other new information?

would i like to own an original?
sure
will it every happen?
never say never.

since my house project is coming to a close it may free up some funds for some other guitars for my personal use BUT i have a top secret ovation project in the works so it may take some time.
