I'm having similar thoughts. Lanaki, it looks like you have the 1537 set up to your liking. Even though the fidelity of You Tube isn't great, and my cheap computer speakers can't do it justice, you can hear how that guitar rings out and sustains. Simply beautiful! I had a 1537 identical to yours. Someday (soon), I'll have another. It is one that should have never gotten away.

i put a new set of 80/20 bronze elixir nanowebs light gauge on yesterday after placing another shim under the saddle. stellarjim had it setup very nice for standard tuning with the two shims but playing slack key (loosening a few strings) caused too much buzzing.
i recorded directly into the mini dv video recorder (sony dcr-hc20 cheapie!) with an added external hotshoe mic that does better for music. the guitar was amped with the marshall acoustic soloist as80r.
i am delighted so many have enjoyed the song. i should copyright it! |

Jim well jim, it looks as if we will have two women on our hands both thinkin' the song was written for them. as of yet, the song is untitled, but i am considering, "Makanani" (ma-ka-na-nee) which means beautiful eyes and describes my wife so well. (maka is eye(s) and nani means beautiful.) |

i am really loving the 1537. it is perfect for my fingerstyle of playing and the sound is exactly what i was hoping to find in an ovation instrument. this guitar has character, aka "mojo", and is very responsive. i have only three guitars on my wish list now: a UTE, a UTE 12 string or a 1688-5 12 string, and one of those mcpherson things.
i do play other styles of music that might be better on a UTE like country/bluegrass with a lot of hammer-ons and loud rhythm. |

i use a brushing technique with my index finger which you can hear behind the melody notes and also do this percussive thing using a sharp downstroke with the fingernail of my middle finger from time to time. this does give it a dulcimer feel as you mentioned. what does not come through the video real well is the bass notes being played with the thumb. you can hear them but no where near as loud and clear as live. |

actually, i was looking out the window in anticipation of my 4 grandkids being delivered to me by their mom so i could babysit them a few hours. they were due any moment and i wanted to tape the song before they arrived. no way was it gonna happen after! the pot of spaghetti was simmering and my girls were being babysat by barney as i was recording. |

You're truly blessed with talent. That song is purdy enough to be in a music box. The only reason Jeff W hasn't made any comments is he's too busy rigging a miniature catapult to hit him in the nuts for selling that guitar to Jim in the first place, and then further confounding himself as to "why he could never make it sound like that?"
I'm inspired. And though I'm not a big fan of alternate tunings, my 1537 now sounds like a poi farmer owns it. I'm trying hard not to copy you (no problem, since I can't play your song for beans), but I think I'm getting something like an "Island blues" (if there was such a thing) groove going. Thanks!! |

i believe my rightful place is in the first group and i would certainly rather be an inspiration than a depressing agent.
when i watch tommy emmanuel play, i get an inspired depression. i will never be that good but tommy ain't here to play music for my kids, family and friends.
i have a 17 year old daughter who lives in north carolina with her mom. she posted twice today on the youtube page and brought tears to my eyes. my wife posted while she was at work and my mom, whom i have not seen in a dozen years, also posted. crazy woman sent the link to everyone she knows online and i am getting inundated with emails and a couple offers to record it professionally. seriously, i had no idea the impact of a sweet little melody.
keep strummin' friend. even if you never play for anyone else, when you are playing a guitar, it will take you places and comfort your spirit. |

jeff w is the one who made the first post on the youtube page. thank you for posting there too.
i think everyone who plays guitar owes it to themself to try an alternate tuning just for the heaven of it. the open G "taro patch" is an excellent one to experiment with. (D-G-D-G-B-D by dropping the 6th, 5th and 1st strings for those who might not know). barre the 2nd fret and you get an A chord, barre the 5th and you get a C, barre the 7th and you get a D, etc. and then you have all those extra fingers to pluck notes with. there's an old saying in Hawaii: "minimum effort, maximum pleasure" and that is what slack key is all about.
strum your open G and then play what would be a Amin7 chord in standard and then move it up two frets and back. the possibilities are about endless and it opens up a whole 'nother musical universe.
"island blues" hmmm...now that's a musical thought! |

I know it's not sheet music, because you wrote the sweet piece....I'm picturing bikini clad babes walking along the beach outside your guitar filled beach house, into a crimson sunset, as i sit here surrounded by snow and ice, with humidifiers inside my precious axes....whatcha think guys? Thx for the tune, Lan,,,,,,,,

thank you for your kind words.
if you read back several posts you will see where others asked the same question about what i was looking at and my response to "joyful noise" (rick).
i live up the mountain about 6 miles from the shoreline although i can see it from here. there's no bikini clad babes outside my window, just a pasture with cattle the likes of which can be seen all over west virginia. there's also a road out front and a majestic view of mauna kea mountain, the highest mountain in the world measured from base to summit. sorry to rain, or should i say snow?, on your parade but that's the reality of it all. i'm really glad you like my tune! |
