Location: PDX | Here goes --- it took Mark about a year to get the NW OFC gathering from concept to reality. Juggling so many schedules is just down right difficult, and planning them a year out even more so. However, Phil proposed an idea earlier, and I’d like to see how much interest there is. One reason for doing this early can be found in an email I recently received from Phil, quoted in part below:
“…. interested in the Vancouver Island Music Fest. The only urgency in deciding is buying the tickets by December when they're half price. $50-55Cdn instead of $110.
The camping is not reserved but it is fairly easy going. If I knew people were coming I would stake extra space in our campground area. It's no big deal at all if you're tenting. Pulling a trailer however, they park you where you fit when you show up.
Be great if any of the gang could make it. If I know how many, I'll buy the tickets. ….”
Anyway, by way of gauging committed interest I open this thread. The commitment comes from buying tickets six months or so in advance, and the time involved in driving to lands end, camping out, and driving back. I’d love to do this as a mini-vacation, and I think hanging out for more than a few hours with you wonderful folks would be a great time.
So who’s interested in NW OFC II at the Campbell River?

Perhaps not THE OFC NW but A NW gathering of some sort. I was impressed with the relative simplicity of the last meet.
Keep it all going! |

And, unlike many larger festivals (this is about 8,000 people per day) you can walk to all five stages and the workshops within about five minutes.
It's a little bit bit hippy, a little bit R'n'R, a litle bit country, and a lot of World Music.
All in all, it's a pretty relaxed, fun affair. usually a lot of homemade music at the campsites too. There are a few rules and security, the only one's heavily enforced are No Canned Music! and um, yer not really supposed to have alcohol in the mainstage area...not that I've ever seen it confiscated... but a square of beer in a cooler will not get past security.
( Lands End my hairy butt! :p More like A Little Piece Of Heaven On Earth! From Portland it's 10 1/2 to 12 hours driving time depending on backups at the border and whether or not you have ferry reservations. From Port Angeles you can probably make it before lunch time! ;) ) |

greg's the only one interested in taking in a little foreign culture? No probs.
And it's not like this is last call or anything, but if there IS any interest I'm just bringing this up so it doesn't fall off the page.
Did I mention it's a lot of cheap (think 3rd world cost, first world language) fun? :-) |

Location: Campbell River, British Columbia | What sort of review do you mean? This link in the first post takes you to the festival website which has lots of pics of the event.
I can mail you my old copy of the grounds map if you like.
Basicly, you're camping in two grass pastures on the fairgrounds. Same place they hold the annual fall fair. The mainstage is farthest from the campsites. (this can be a blessing if you go to bed before the music stops at 1AM.) At the very farthest of the far field, you're about a 7 to 10 minute walk from the main stage.
You will pass three of the other stages on the way.
Space in front of the main stage is 'reserved' every morning by staking out your blanket or carpet. In our campsite, the first person up (usually either me or Dave at 6:30) grabs the various carpets and blankets to stake out our space right beside the sound booth. This gives us the best mix IMO, and you can still see the stage when some folks get up and boogie a bit.
(most of the day, all danceing is off to the side of the stage, but the last 2 acts of the night usually EVERYONE is up and dancing)
Low riders, folding chairs with seats about 6 inches off the ground and relatively low backs are required for seating in the area we prefer. Regular folding chairs are allowed in the back half of the mainstage field. (see exact specs at website) Everything else is legal at all the other stages.
The other stages have something happening from 10-12ish until 6PM. Then it's just mainstage events.
There are 15 - 20 different food consessions and a beer garden. But you can bring your own food. (beer regs well......we'll talk ;-) ) There are also craft booths and massage available.
Kids play area where they can keep 'em occupied and supervised all day.
What else would you like to know? |

For the sake of mapquest or whatever, it's near the corner of Headquarters and Dove Creek road....I think. at least close to there. That is...if Headquarters and Dove creek meet, they may be parallel. It's definatly only about three (country) blocks north of the Island Highway and Headquarters road, on Headquarters road.
Or try locating Vanier Highschool. It's pretty much right across the street. |

For the Island part of your journey, I recomend the 'old Island Highway', now called the Oceanside Route. It will add about 10 minutes to the trip and include more than 50 postcard perfect moments.
.............................................
REMEMBER: Absolutely no jokes at the border!
(this applies more to southbound than northbound traffic. heading home from the gathering at gh1s place the Canadian guard asked the reason for my trip. I told him it was a gathering of guitar players.
He told me he played, had some beater guitar or another. Told him this was for lovers of Ovation guitars only. He puffs right up, raises and eyebrow and says, "So now my guitars crap is it!? .........Welcome home.") |

Sheri and i are interested. However, it takes a chunk of vacation, and i'd like to get a decent size group of NW OFC'ers up there to warrent the trip.
Even with that said, we're considering it regardless of who commits to it. Probably take the whole week and do some touring of the island. We'll commit before the end of November.
As to the rest of you bums ( :) j/k) if you can possibly swing it, this really sounds like a great chance to hang out over the weekend. I mean, if you guys can put a half a dozen, or more, guitars in your stable and stay married, with this trip you can even bring her!
Oh, and my vaccinations are up to date, thank-you very much!

They are promising 3 major headliners this year, compared to the previous 1 on Saturday night. Previous headliners have included The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Steve Earl, and Bruce Cockburn (the ck is silent, Jeff)
Anyone interested in coming? Let me know and I'll buy your tickets now before the price goes up. They are limiting advance discount ticket this year as it sells out every year anyway. |

(Note to traveling cousins, if you drive 80 mph in an 80 kph zone it will look like everyone else is parked, and you will get to meet a mountie. They don't wear red on patrol.)
Ah well, if I take the wife to Courtenay to buy the tix, she'd end up spending another couple hundred on quilting supplies...so it's a saving overall.
Looks like we'll have to set up the giant green and yellow geodesic dome so there's an easy to see gathering point. |

I'd like to re-iterate the "no joking" at the border comment.
Also, I was hoping to do a "gathering" here in Mount Vernon at some point. We have plenty of room and plenty of gear and such, and it's simple to get to. Lots of cool stuff in the area year 'round too.
Anyway, just wanted to throw it out there as a possibility/choice. One of the reasons we moved here was that it's relatively close or at least easy to get to, just about anywhere in the Pac Northwest from here.
FWIW I see the Festival passed are listed as sold out, on the website. |

Location: Campbell River, British Columbia | $69 "Christmas in July" tickets are sold out. The next batch are on sale now, some places, I believe around $89. No word yet on what full price tickets will be this year but they've been sneaking up the last few years as popularity for this event has grown.
They're promising a headliner every night this year to justify the higher prices and more limited amount of discount tickets...though most of my favourite stuff is usually happening through the day. Though the year Nitty Gritty Dirt band played friday night I felt like I'd recouped my investment on the first night... :D
Must reiterate Mr. Ovations earlier comment about no joking at the border.
Annecdote; While on the road selling last year I thought I reward our good work by taking my associate and I across the border for a beer in a foreign country.
Among the questions at the border, "Any charges or convictions sir?"
"Not since I was in highschool. Wait! I guess I shouldn't be joking with you, right?"
"Please pull over there sir and see the man at the desk, hand him this paper."
Paper says, 'Admits to charges in highschool.'
Inside, neither I nor the attendant say more than neccessary. (yeah, I'm a slow learner) After about 10 minutes of running around a checking seveeral different computers the fellow asks, "What were you convicted of, sir?"
"Speeding, when I was about 17."
"Have a nice day sir."
No jokes, no fun, don't even smile too much...

Since I have a July Birthday and the Barbeque should be well seasoned would it be appropriate to hold a "Fraid to leave the Country/Limited Acheiver's" get together in My backyard at the same time.
I know I've been meaning to make the Tulip Fest some time. There's some good incentives. |

It might be worth the long distance travelers to stay overnight like we did in Portland to take in the local sights the day before or after the Gathering. LOS LOBOS
"It became a mission, almost a crusade ... bringing music together to bring people together." - Los LobosLos Lobos
During their twenty-five years together, Los Lobos has emerged as one of the most respected and original bands around. Combining rock, folk, blues, R & B, country, and Tex-Mex with traditional Mexican music, they've continually tried new sounds and confounded anyone who tries to classify them.
It's time to think Musicfest!
Here's just a few confirmed performers to get you started. More of this summer's line up will be
announced soon. Please help us spread the word and share this email with your friends.
Vancouver Island Musicfest
July 6 - 8 , 2007 in the Comox Valley
Dougie MacLean
Making a rare Canadian Festival appearance, Dougie MacLean has built an international reputation as songwriter, composer and extraordinary performer on his own terms. His songs have been covered by hosts of artists and his song Caledonia has become Scotlands most popular contemporary song. His music has been used in Hollywood films including 'Last of the Mohicans' and he has been the subject of three BBC TV Specials. We are thrilled to present Dougie MacLean at Musicfest at last!
Watermelon Slim & The Workers
While serving in Vietnam and laid up in an Army hospital Slim taught himself left-handed backward slide guitar using a $5 balsawood guitar and his Zippo lighter as the slide. Officially he first appeared on the music scene in the early 1970s as the only Vietnam veteran to record a full length LP album during the Vietnam War.
More recently, he has gone on to be nominated and in many cases win, nearly every blues award of merit.
"If Hank Williams was reincarnated as a blues man, he would be Watermelon Slim!"
Kellylee Evans
JUST NOMINATED FOR A JUNO AWARD - BEST JAZZ VOCAL ALBUM
"Alongside sparse, groove-based jazz,
Evans sang domin- antly, filling each vocal belt with enough soothing, syrupy soul to conjure up comparisons to Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and a bevy of other jazzy heavyweights. Featuring songs off her highly-anticipated debut, Fight or Flight, Evans is a budding talent in Canada's jazz-urban scene, and is well worth a listen after a good dusting of old Billie Holiday LPs." ~ Exclaim! Magazine
The Return of John Boutte!
A hit suprise at last year's Musicfest, John Boutte returns!
Emerging as the voice of post-Katrina New Orleans, John's sense of mission to share the soul of his beleaguered and beloved hometown has expanded in the wake of the devastating failure of levees and bureaucrats in the 2005 storm. His vocal style and rapport with audiences have been compared to the greats: Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, and Jackie Wilson.

Seu Jorge
His fans consider him a renewer of Brazilian samba-style pop.seu jorge
Seu Jorge has gained exposure through his work as an actor and soundtrack composer. He appeared in the critically acclaimed film City of God as Knockout Ned, and then played Pelé Dos Santos in Bill Murray's "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," for which he provided much of the soundtrack in the form of Portuguese language cover versions of David Bowie classics; which Bowie quickly proclaimed his favorite versions of the songs.

Joan Armatrading
All the while, no matter the accolade, Joan Armatrading has focused on the music...
joan armatrading
When first you hear the voice, rich, warm, remarkable, it's a voice that suits a secret sharer, a woman who tells the truth. For 33 years, Joan Armatrading has done just that-- in songs crafty, subtle and sublime. Armatrading's songs are in the truest sense soul music; even at their boldest, driven by her passionate guitar, they touch the listener like a whisper to the ear, like confessions from heart to heart.
Effortlessly eclectic, her sound ranges from share soul to sophisticated pop --an apt mix for a performer born under the palms of the West Indies and raised beneath the smokestacks of Birmingham England. Her first guitar a gift from her mother - a pawn shop exchange for two old prams - Joan by the early 70's had moved to London and released her debut, Whatever's for Us. The career that followed has seen the birth of classics - "Love and Affection," Down to Zero" "Drop the Pilot" "Me Myself I."
Joan played for Nelson Mandela oh his 70th birthday at Wembley Stadium in London and at the end of 1999 Joan was asked to write a tribute song for the former President of South Africa. On April the 6th 2000, Nelson Mandela made a private visit to London and Joan, backed by The Kingdom Choir, had the honour of singing that special song entitled 'The Messenger' to him. Mr. Mandela danced and smiled on stage through out the entire song...
Guy Clark
The Songwriter's songwriter from Texas...
Songwriting legend Guy Clark doesn't merely compose songs; he projects images and characters with the kind of hands-on
care and respect of a literary master. Clark works slowly and with strict attention to detail, and has produced an impressive collection of timeless gems, leaving very little waste behind. The emotional level of his work, as well as the admiration and esteem of his peers, consistently transcends sales figures and musical genres. Using everyday language to construct extraordinary songs for more than 35 years, Clark continues to be the type of songwriter whom young artists study and seasoned writers, as well discriminating listeners, revere.
Olu Dara
His reputation is that of an
instrumentalist who is particularly adept at re-creating the sound and inflections of the early New Orleans trumpet players, within a modern context.
Drawing on his experiences playing in carnivals and marching bands and especially on his Mississippi roots, Olu Dara leads a band that is not at all self-conscious about entertaining an audience. He is an effective singer as well as a trumpeter who has been known to add a circus flourish, twirling his horn between phrases, at jazz concerts that have become a bit too serious and stuffy. He writes and performs a broad range of music, from the most down-home blues to shimmering ballads, from Caribbean-style cooking to African pop stylings to New Orleans struts. Most of his pieces mix idioms into a rich gumbo.
Rachelle van Zanten
rachelle
"Rachelle van Zanten has come a long way from her bluegrass upbringing in the
foothills of northern British Columbia. For over a decade, this Canadian slide guitarist and songwriter has been working out her soulful blues riffs and turning heads. When the award-winning Painting Daisies dissolved in late 2005, van Zanten seized the opportunity to launch her solo career, recording her "fresh and rootsy" solo debut Back to Francois with producer Joby Baker. Baker has since assumed the role of drummer, accompanying van Zanten on an exhaustive tour that has thrust this up-and-coming artist into the international limelight." (FFward Mag- Nov. 2006)
Paul Ubana Jones
paul
Born in London to a
Yorkshire mother and a Nigerian father, Paul Ubana Jones was playing guitar by the age of 11, beginning a three decade career that would see him crossing continents and recording seven albums of mostly original songs.
After graduating from a London music college, where he studied guitar and cello, Paul began to forge the solo acoustic style that he has stuck to and developed over the years. In the late seventies, Paul based himself in Provence, Southern France, and toured all over Europe and North Africa, as well as venturing extensively into Canada and the US.
In the late eighties Paul and his family moved to New Zealand, which is still their permanent home. He has continued to perform internationally, to growing acclaim. Concert performances include opening for the likes of Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo', Tuck and Patti, and Crowded House.
Sharlene Wallace
Sharlene remembers being 7 years old and making a model harp from bits of wood and nails, using rubber bands for strings. Years later, Sharlene sculpts sound through her musical vehicle, the harp.
Now an accomplished, innovative harpist, recording artist and
composer, Sharlene explores Celtic, South American, and contemporary genres.
Sharlene's CDs are collections of transcendent tunes which sparkle and resonate with her masterful technique. Relaxing, rejuvenating, rhythmic, evocative, beautiful, original.

Wow! Here's a few more confirmed performers for Musicfest 2007. Please help us spread the word and share the news with your friends.
Los Rastrillos Returns!
A surprise hit at Musicfest 2007, this Mexican roots-reggae-rock band returns to thrill this year's audience.
Elan
Elan began singing with The Wailers of Bob Marley fame and was then signed to a label started by Tony Kanal from No Doubt. Now its been made official that Gwen Stefani will be on his album. Elan has made an impact on the California beach music scene ( think Jack Johnson) as well
as the reggae roots scene.
The first single from the album is Girl, featuring Assassin, and ELAN has added All Nighter, a duet with Gwen Stefani, to the album.
First single, Girl's sexual motif is driven home brilliantly by ELAN's embracing vocals and interludes from Assassin, a rising MC and DJ star in Jamaica. Currently, main stations in the Virgin Islands/Caribbean have been heavily grasping onto Girl and the album's title track Together As One.
ELAN just wrapped up touring as the opener of UB40's tour in North America |

Downright infectious buggers, they are..)
it gets bigger and better every year. Actually, as of last year I think they decided on better and dropped the bigger.
.......................................
This particular event is very family friendly with childrens acts and several secure play areas near the campgrounds. The regular touring clowns, stilts, paint & play.
While the grown-ups play kiddy a bit too. Only adolescents are kept on a pretty short leash.
"How come the bald guy can smuggle his popwrapped beer cans but me an' my buddies can't bring in a square of beer?"
"Because you're 15, and he's over 40. There are two of you with 24 beer bottles, there is one of him with 4 beer cans."
"That sooooo sucks!" |
